Roberts' job in the Pitt-s [NY Post]

The clock on Norm Roberts' St. John's coaching career might be ticking toward midnight and yesterday the springs all but popped out on the Garden court.

And almost no one in Red and White seemed to notice.

They didn't notice that, late in Roberts' sixth season, a team built on hustle and defense allowed No. 12 Pittsburgh to shoot 51-percent from the field in a 71-64 Red Storm loss.

"They went everywhere they wanted," said power forward Justin Burrell, "and did everything they wanted."

Coming off the best five-game stretch of ball that St. John's (15-13, 5-11 Big East) had played this season, the Red Storm seemed uninspired.

When asked if he believes St. John's is much better off than when he arrived, Roberts was firm in his response.

"Anybody who doesn't think that is dead wrong," Roberts told the Post. "It is. We got good players. We've got more talent than we've ever had. We have a good foundation of guys that have played Big East basketball. We just got to take it one game at a time and continue to get better."
...
"But they don't have the wins."

The only way the program can improve is if Norm is fired.
Then there will be hope.

Yea the team is better than when he came but then SJU was just coming off the huge scandal. The guy has had 6 years to make this team a Big East contender and has not even gotten us out of the basement in the conference. He is a terrible in game coach and doesnt develop his players or recruit the best players, what is he bringing? he needs to go.

Don't blame Norm for his response to this question, because he's right.

It was a poorly phrased question, if asked the way it was presented in the article.

OF COURSE we're better off now than when he started, when he had very few scholarship players and we weren't even ELIGIBLE for postseason play.

It was a poor question from Robbins, and Norm answered it correctly.

What Robbins SHOULD'VE asked is: "Is 5-11 in conference acceptable to you?? If not, what about the team's performance on the court and struggles to recruit Big East level talent do YOU take accountability for?? What (if anything) do YOU need to improve on??"

This year, we have one win over a top 25 team.
In Norm's first year, we had two. AND a Holiday Festival Championship.

Both seasons have ended the same way, but seriously, is there such a difference between any Norm coached team?

Perhaps it's semantics, but it's tough to talk about "foundation," when at least nine of these guys will be out the door thirteen months from now.
