for those that want norm back...
« on: March 18, 2010, 09:20:29 AM »

I'd like to know what about this season makes you want that.

Is it the way we finished the season (2-5)?

Is it our BE record (6-12)?

Is it our overall record (17-16)?

Is it because he's a "nice guy?"

Is it because th kids played hard, and if so, do you think kids wouldn't play hard for most other coaches?

I am not baiting here. I truly am interested in knowing the rationale behind those of you who want norm back, bc I don't understand it.  I void any rights to an argumentative response. Just want to know how your brains work.

I don't think there is anyone that wants him back.

Forget about the records....nobody comes to the games.  He should be let go just because of that.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Baldi said he deserves another year.  It seems like Red might want him back too.

I think any of us in RSHFs position would not wish the loss of a job on that individual.  RSHF is a great fan of the school. This post was not directed at him at all.

Baldi just likes to provoke. Have heard he has been hired as a peacemaker for Iraq elections. :)

The team plays hard for him

He's improved as a coach

He has his 2 best recruits coming in

Hold on a second.  You are telling me Davontay Grace is a better recruit than Justin Burrell was?  Also, he isn't a definite until he signs that LOI next year as we have learned the hard way in the past.  Grace isn't as good of a recruit as Malik Boothe was for crying out loud.

According, to Konchalski's observations and synopsis....  Grace does sound like a better recruit than Boothe.

I thought Grace was the top rated player in his class in NYC until an injury.  Someone chime in on that one.

While the team plays hard for him, he has not improved as a coach. He still has erractic substitution patterns and often fails at making adjustments.

Also. . Grace is a Junior who will not be at Jefferson next season. So he will not be coming in next year either. He will be part of the Class of NINE that will be coming to SJU for the 2011-  12 season.

Grace is probably a little better than Boothe at this point but not by much. I haven't seen him enough to really get a gauge on his potential.

Also Tha Kid....seriously is there anyone left? I think this thread is pretty moot.

Baldi and Red2935 at a minimum.

I am not 100% sure that I want Norm back or that I want him fired.

Part of me wants him gone, but am so afraid of who he will be replaced by.

Part of me feels that Norm is close to turning a corner in recruiting.

Part of me feels that Norm had on the job Training as a bench coach and is getting better. I still question some of his substitution patterns.

I also feel that Norm is a really classy guy and people have taken shots at him for statement he has made. The guy is fighting for his job in the public eye and I think he has handle himself well.

I am on the fence. I know one thing I will always be a St. John's Fan. It is my school.

I honestly think next year this team will be good and make the tourney with or without Norm. Problem is, we were saying the same exact thing last year about this years team.  20+ wins  etc...  At some point you have realize its not working and change directions.
Plus, those 9 scholorships, are a big problem going foward with Norm.  He's proven to be a below average recruiter. He lands mediocre big east talent at best. Burrell being the exception. And look at what happened to his game.  Confidence and playing time down the tubes.
Good luck Norm,   I hope it works out somewhere else.

First, I want to say that there is certainly a case to be made that Norm should be let go. If that’s the school’s decision – and I think it is -  I would understand completely. That said, if it were up to me, I’d bring him back, and I’ll try to explain why.

To me, there are two areas that would lead to the decision to fire him. You brought up the first:

You asked if it was the record:
Is it the way we finished the season (2-5)?
Is it our BE record (6-12)?
Is it our overall record (17-16)?

I saw most of the games this year, and record notwithstanding, this team was much, much improved. There’s been progress every year. I’ve heard it said many times that if this were year 4 or 5, the record would be fine. Well, I don’t feel that the fact we’re a year or two behind some folks expectations is a reason to let him go. It’s even possible to point out mitigating circumstances. Not a compelling argument to keep him, but neither, to me, is it a compelling reason to let him go.

The second area is recruiting. Specifically, he hasn’t brought in the big name, and the looming prospect of all the openings in two years. Both legitimate concerns. But... the talent level has gone up every year. And if you remember the Jarvis years (especially the last 2-3), when finding our name listed with any top recruit was rare.. and virtually nonexistent with the city kids, I again see progress. I believe the problem of the size of the junior class may not be as big a problem as some think. Again, to me, progress, and not compelling either way.

Before Jarvis’ last season, I gave up tix I’d had for over 20 years. I was horrified by the program (even before Pittsburgh and payments). That has been completely turned around. On every front, and I don’t believe it’s been easy. And even if the progress in wins & talent is slower than everyone would like.. I see progress in both areas. Enough for me to keep Norm. Not enough for others? I understand. But it would be enough for me.

I'll take Norm back because of all the mid major coaches mentioned. theres probably only 1 I would want here. AS for the other names, I do not want Hewitt,Greenberg,Bobby Knight,Mark Jackson etc. LIke I said, Willard needs more time. If we cant get a big name coach right now, I want Norm back

Question:  paul hewitt is undeniably a better recruiter than norm.  He's made a title game.  Why do you prefer norm to him?

What makes you think Hewitt would come here? I admit I'm so scared of the University's capability of making the right executive decision for the future.
