Two very good teams.

Two very good teams.

Both would not be top 10 in the Big East

Top 6-10. No doubt. Leonard Hamilton has turned FSU into a strong program. What has USF done in the BE? FSU would house them.

How seriously can you take him?

As for Greenberg, he's made one NCAA Tournament in seven years at Virginia Tech.

And VTech wasn't nuthin mo than a glorified mid-major when he took over and he lead them into the two best conf in the land: BE and ACC.

All I know is the brother made VTech relevant when they was never relevant. Give the man his due.

Gee, after loading up on North Carolina, Duke and Maryland AT LEAST twice every year, can Seth Greenberg handle playing Syracuse, Villanova and WV once?

Lance Stephenson chose to play for Mick Cronin because he didn't believe that Norm could coach him. He wanted to stay home, but he knew that it probably would have stunted his growth.

Bring in a NY guy like Greenberg, and I think a kid like that stays.
He's brought talent to Blacksberg, but not enough. And that is a concern.
It's a fair point to make, but maybe what we need is a guy who will finally
excel once finally given a chance to recruit a pot like NYC.

The facilities argument is absolute BS. Kids came here for decades, and dis so without a fancy shower faucet.

Everyone here is operating in a vacuum.  Just like mccaffrey gets an excuse for not putting up a team that could be in the top 8 of the be bc he's in the maac, greenberg should get some slack bc he's in blacksburg, va.  Vtech is relevant bc of him.  Hed take us to where we want to be. And if he doesn't? We'll make a few ncaa tourney, we'll REaLLY be on the map again, and then itd be realistic to get the HR coach.

The vacuum is comparing Greenberg to Norm.  You need to compare Greenberg with someone who's not our current coach.

He'll get an extension from Va Tech.  I think St. John's is just the offer so the Hokies will counter offer.

Later this week I'll try to post some notes from some South Florida guys who think Seth is good... but not great.  At a certain point, y'all, you have to ask about results.  Greenberg has a team laden with juniors and seniors... and still falls short because he schedules like garbage.

But the results aren't that great.  He'd be an improvement - and possibly around what St. Johns level should be - occasional NCAA tourneys in down years, some decent recruits.  But I think St. John's should shoot higher.  And by higher, I don't mean higher profile, I mean a higher risk-reward kind of guy.

If not Fran McCaffery, call Robert Morris' Mike Rice, see if he can get a decently priced AND CONNECTED assistant who can get him recruits to coach.  Call Willard, see if he can do the same... those kind of guys seem to be pretty good game and development coaches, and St. John's badly needs guys who can pull wins out on their level.

Also: coach of the year awards are bullsh*t.  They reward coaches who come in with low expectations and coach their guys up to decent - not always guys who coach their guys up to the top of the league.   Like Coach K isn't the best coach in that league?

Howbout the last few coaches in blacksburg?  There aren't many coaches who live in as undesirable area to recruit to in a major conference with as little history and tradition where basketball is not the big sport as seth and va tech. I can't think of any example in the big east.

How many McDonald's AAs does Coach K have?

8? 9? Stevie Wonder could coach that team.

I hear ya bre, but dont y'all think we took nuff of a risk the last time out?

Guys that aint gotta whole lotta experience is a gamble that I dont think St. John can take.

McDAA is often bs.  Getting recruited by duke or unc helps you get rated better. Its like which came first chicken or egg.  Did duke take him bc he was mcdaa caliber, or was he taken to mcdaa bc he's committed to duke?

Peter, we can't afford a risk. Mike Rice might be great, but he has the kind of profile for a hire we should have taken in 2004 instead of norm. We need someone more definitively good, even if the ceiling might be a little lower. This time is absolutely critical.  Seth or hewitt may not be homeruns, but now is the time where a ground rule double or triple - guaranteed - is the right move.

Consider this:  seth greenberg has made more ncaa tourneys from a major conference than any st johns coach in history have in a major conference other than while at st johns.  Why? Bc st johns has NEVER gotten a coach from a major conference to come to st johns!  We aren't a hot destination. If greenberg wants to go all in with us, we take him.
