The Coaching Search: What We Should Do
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:51:49 AM »
Of course, you put your feelers out to Billy D and Rick Pitino.  If their circumstances are such that they want to come, you give them whatever $ they want.  But, it's unlikely to go anywhere.

You target Jeff Capel first, IMO.  A young coach who has succeeded in a big conference, has gotten a #1 NBA draft pick before, has recruited well, might very well be looking to come to the east coast, and has the coaching pedigree.

If you can't get him, you figure out if there is anyone else like him in college basketball (I can't think of one off the top of my head).

If that doesn't work you move to a group of guys including VERY successful mid major coaches (more than 1 seasons) like Fran McCaffrey, Brian Gregory, etc. AND middle-aged coaches in major conferences who have won before, recruited before, and might be able to do better recruiting to NYC like Seth Greenberg, Steve Alford.  Paul hewitt is interesting bc he couldn't possibly recruit any better, and he has made a Final Four, but he also makes the tourney only 1 out of 2 years on average.  He's a safe double/triple...if that's who we go with, I'm cool with it, but might be better to take somewhat of a chance on a guy who has a higher ceiling.

If NONE of those work to your liking, then you target the up and coming coaches who have showed you something like Steve Donahue, Kevin Willard, Chris Mooney, Mike Rice, etc.

Any of the above named individuals would be MUCH MUCH MUCH better than Norm.  This is how it should have gone down last time.  Let's hope Monasch can provide more direction than the committee could in 2004.

The school needs to look for a coach who has experience around high-major college programs and who has won as a head coach.  But they should also look for a coach who is going to be in the fold for a while.  I like a younger coach.  And the school has to be willing to pay assistants good salaries - to get someone who has real ins to players or has proven able to get top players.  Like Shaheen Holloway, Jared Grasso, Massiello... I don't purport to know who all those guys are.

But those assistants are key to evaluating talent.  As is the ability to train, relate to, and utilize players.  If we could get Capel or Scott Drew or even crazy-ass Frank Martin to come and hire an assistant who knows the area, that would be hot.

you bring in Tubby Smith...Imagine Tubby on a visit..with the parents present...Hey I am tubby smith, this is my national championship ring from Kentucy..yes and i never missed the tournament while head coach, matter of fact I never lost in the first round.I took over the job in Minn when that program was in shambles(remember the academic scandal of 98')well that team won 8 games the season before I arrived. We have won 20 games in each of the three seasons I have been there, and been to two dances.I also am a board of director on the NABC.OOh by the way I have never been accused of cheating. When I won the 98 championship I had no NBA'ers or all americans which hadnt been done in twenty years.I have sent a bunch of kids to the NBA.Your son will be in good hands with me..

OOH and as far as no NYC ties...that sounds like begging from those in the AAU..TUbby won everywhere he went..what were his ties on those stops?? 17 straight 20 win seasons...

you didnt mention that he was an assistant coach for the 2000 olympics.

and personally, i like tubby,
but your facts were a little off.... his first 2 years coaching he didnt make the post season. and he made the nit his first year at minn...
so he missed the ncaa tournament 3 times in his career.

but still 16 of 19 years is pretty impressive.... considering we havent been there in, what, 9 years now.

I love Mark Jackson but how could anyone really call for us to hire someone with ZERO coaching experience at this point?  It would be a catastrophic gamble.

mark jackson is on my list....at 15 :)...let mark keep commentating, we are making a sure thing hire here, not a cross our fingers and hope for the best hire...no coaching experience and omg, guess what?, no one cares about playing for a good former athlete...these kids wanna know they will win, and they will have a chance at the pros...this thread...what the school should do?...take a list of the top 30 coaches in college, and run it down starting from #1...whats the worst answer u get? no?...make a call to everyone...then at least u know ur getting the best u can
