« on: March 19, 2010, 06:26:17 PM »
This is def just a rumor but I heard that its a done deal Seth Greenberg 6 years @ 1.6 million a year. Waiting for Vtech to get bounced out of the NIT.

Are you hearing this from a reliable source?  Dont need any names.  I just want to know the "strength" of this rumor.

Someone I would trust to not say something unless they were pretty sure.

I'm not sure if I believe this, I think they will try to get something done with a few big boys first and  this type of process doesn't get done in one afternoon.  I'm not saying that Greenberg won't end up here though, I wouldn't mind him, but I would just prefer if we went after a few bigger names first especially at that salary.  Is your source connected to the program in any way? You don't have to give a name or anything, I was just wondering.

Yes he is

Again I am no way confirming anything. Its just a rumor I heard from someone who does have some ties to the program.

OK, thanks.  I just hope this is a fallback option as opposed to the big fish though.  It would be a shame if we didn't try for Donovan.

I agree I would like to see them go after a couple of big names. Just what I have heard, will hope with you that its not true.

For all we know, monasch has already talked to the big boys. It wouldn't be that shocking if pitino and donovan didn't need much time to say no.

Greenberg would be a very good hire. Key is those 9 ships, which is why I like hewitt more than greenburg, hopefully he befriends the right aau guys and gets some studs.

Monasch admitted to Michael Kay within the last hour that we are not shooting for the very top tier of coaches as far as salary is concerned.

I'm sure everyone realizes this, but we will never hear whether we called pitino or donovan. This is all back channels.  Schools don't want to be publicly rejected ala nc state and calipari.

I'll take Greenberg and run. Great hire and lets improve this program.

If that is true, then Donovan is out.  I just feel like if we are gonna give a guy 1.6 million, he better be a HUGE name.  I like Greenberg and think he would be a good fit here and get us to the NCAA's maybe once every two or three years which would be a step up, don't get me wrong, but we could get a guy who could do that for A LOT cheaper than 1.6 million.  Like Mccaffrey I'm sure could be had for around 1 million and he has much more potential than Seth.

He's not my first choice, but i won't complain if he ends up here.  He helped build up a non-existent program at Va Tech to one that is a legit ACC team.
FWIW-  I have a hard time believing anything is a done deal this quickly. Monasch knows that his legacy depends on this hire.  He should take a little time. At least more than a few hours.

People, people, just bc the announcement was made today doesn't mean monasch hasn't been doing due diligence over the past few weeks.

I'd much rather have Donovan but if Monasch has been putting out feelers and Billy&other big names didnt have interest than I'll take Greenberg.

I hope he keeps Oz Cross on the staff and maybe bring back Kimani if that's possible or another guy connected to the NY scene who can deliver like Book

Actually now that I'm thinking of it didnt someone mention he has someone from NY on his staff ? Red Autry or someone like that ?

If anyone is interested, VA Tech has 4 star SF commit for 2010 and a 4 star PF commit for 2011.

I think you may be selling him a bit short. You know he's not my 1st choice either, but,  in NYC he's got a lot more resources to work with than Blacksburg.
It would be a dream job, if he decides to take it, since he's from Bethpage (or so i read). I think he'd do well recruiting.
