http://www.accsports.com/blogs/david-glenn/201003187426/david-glenn-chats-with-paul-hewitt.php

interview done with hewitt before the ncaa tourny...the interesting thing to note is how he talks about his future at gt...he mentions how "the hope" is that he will be there in the future but he says how its all a business now...so basically, he stays unless someone ponys up the cash...and the way hes talked about our program, this is prob a done deal if the others arent interested...if hewitt ends up being our "safety" hire, then this is a very good time for st johns basketball

hewitt is not going to outrecruit the other big east upper echelon coaches..forget about that happening..at GT he has a huge talent pool to draw from and not as many fishermen taking all the fish....

you dont know that...dont pretend like its an absolute he cant...even if it takes him winning a season or two to be competitive with those guys who cares...have you seen the parity in college ball the past few years, theres plenty of talent to go around...teams arent always going head to head for the same recruits anyway...idt anyone is expecting him to be calapari, but he'll do just fine recruiting in this area

About Hewitt, did anyone know he's 28-52 in the ACC the last 5 years? Do we really want this? :/

I disagree about Favors. Watching him from start to finish in his freshman year whether it was Hewitt's coaching or not, Favors improved a lot. He was playing with pure talent at the start and by the end of the year you could see his moves, positioning and overall play was much better. He was carrying GT and was arguably the best big man in the country at the end of the season.

Tubby is a bit overrated imo.

hes not a great coach...thats the bottom line...hes never really done great in the acc, even during his best years, and he has had stretches where his teams have been crap, 9 out of his 11 yrs at gt his teams have finished in the top 7 of the league, but theyve never finished above 3rd place...hes only had 5 20 win season in his last 11...only had 1 winning season in acc play in 11 tries...and he has only made it past the 2nd round of the ncaa tournament once, during the year they were the runner up...but hes our fallback guy, and nothing else...if we strike out on pitino, donovan, tubby, etc, then hes not a bad choice...or at the very least, hes a better choice than a mid major coach

Who do you want then..?

After missing on Billy D, Hewitt is THE best realistic option available.

Hewitt should be able to get the most talent in here.  He is the best choice.

100% agree  PMG
We all want a big name and a home run and this is probably the only one we have a chance with albeit one with flaws.

Paul Hewitt has recruited Mickey D's AA left and right, bre. He's going up against evrybody fo those brothers.

That's what I want. I want the big time talents in here and Hewitt has as good of a chance as most of doing it for us. He's not my first choice but he seems to be the best option left and one that isn't getting enough credit for what he's done imo. He's not Pitino or Donovan but he's not trash either.

If you look at his classes through the years, they've been very feast or famine. I think that has hurt his continuity and team chemistry.

He would benefit from being able to recruit at the minimum NCAA eligibility standards. Opposing coaches have negatively recruited against GT by saying you'll have to work hard (take Calculus and compete with kids that average mid-1300 SATs) and that, although Atlanta has a very high African-American population, Georgia Institute of Technology doesn't.

come on SJ....you're tellin' me the entire country isn't all over Derrick Favors?  you tellin' me the SEC isn't battling with him to get top players from the South?

You have a distorted sense of reality sometimes.

Favors was actually an unusual case.
He was a shy kid, who wanted to stay in Georgia. He made it clear, through his AAU coach, that he wanted to be close to his mother and friends. It was only a question of whether he would go to Athens or stay in a better area of Atlanta for his year of college. He never wanted the recruiting circus that some kids think they'll enjoy.

I'm not trying to argue on the other guy's behalf.

Didn't take it as such - thanks for the info.

That said, NTSG, do you thinK Hewitt is landing top players mainly bc - as SJ says - Duke and UNC won't play certain games - or do you think Hewitt prob has to beat out a lot of SEC teams for his recruits?

I like your point re: academic standards.  That won't help his coaching, but it MIGHT help provide continuity as you said.

My problem with Hewitt is his offense is kind of ugly only with more talent than Norm could ever get. If he can recruit as well as he does at Tech we should be fine. If not.......
