Honestly, not my fav choice, but if he can get in with some of the AAU guys and get some recruits, he is a VERY good game coach.  7 NCAAs in 13 years in the BE and ACC, including some much higher finishes in conference than Hewitt or greenberg ever had.

Who are all these sources and why don't they realize they are making us look like a Mickey Mouse organization.  What is the point of these clowns releasing info?

About Skinner though, he would have us in the Top 25 easily next season and although it's not the sexy choice, if you look at their resume's and try to tell me that Hewitt or Greenberg are better coaches than this guy, you are nuts.

Watching the way they merked St. John's last year, and how the offense is very forwards-friendly, I would think xhoops would be excited about this.

He's such not the sexy (or young) choice, but a stable one, perhaps.

You're going to seriously regret passing on Brad Stevens if we settle on this guy. While Skinner is a great coach and has produced NBA players, he's in his 60s. The guy most likely will not be coaching past the sixth year of his contract, and then we'll have to restart this entire coaching search problem. The smart thing to do would scoop up Brad Stevens and promote a guy like Cross to his staff and hire another local guy. The recruiting will be on par at worst with Skinner, and the coaching will be identical to better for the next 20 years and not just six. This guy could come here and be our next Lou Carnesca.

I highly doubt this would be the last stop in Steven's career, I also doubt he would even consider coming here.  The Butler job is much better than the St. John's job right now and if he keeps this up, the big boys will come calling eventually.

Unless he's gone forward in the hot tub time machine, Skinner is 57.

I would think that schools have looked into Stevens and he has said "no moving" through his agent.  Also, he's still playing.  I don't know that for sure, but I always hear he's been reluctant to move on - and if he does it's for better jobs than this, or DePaul.  (I'll probably be proven wrong and watch him take the DePaul job now!)

-Ex-pro,
-very good game coach,
-below-average recruiter,
-flex offense tends to cater to more cerebral players,
-was unwilling to play the AAU games at BC,
-58 when next season begins

He's a double, who the university shouldn't have to pay at the levels they were allegedly throwing around. If he turns them down, then the DN would have a legitimate reason to call the process embarrassing.

From Novemerber 15th to March I'll like this move b/c he is a solid coach.  But from April to November 15th, this doesnt get me excited at all w/ regards to recruiting.

For those in the loop, does he have NY ties to the AAU / HS guys?

Brad Stevens would make a splash. He's young.
Doe he want to take the next step? Butler is having a once in the lifetime season,
but will they ever do it again?

Hes a good coach and if he hired a guy who could help him recruit he could do well here. Hes not my next choice but we could do way worse. Hes going to need to hire an assistant who knows the AAU scene and knows the NYC coaches. If this happens I would say its a good hire but not the splash we all thought was coming. Overall I would be satisfied with this move. I think he could improve the program and then maybe retire in say 4-5 years and then we can attract bigger coaches.

are we talking about Seymour Skinner??

Seriously, similar track record as Louie or Paul Leave-Itt, gets to the NCAAs more often than not, respected name. Comes down to the assistants, does he hire a Mo HIcks for recruiting? or a Pete Gillen? that would be a great three to have on the bench.

Butler should be awesome next year.  They arent losing much.  It might be tough for an indiana guy to come to St. Johns now when Butler could be a top 10 team next year.  He could then wait for other big jobs that come along.

However, if you throw 1.6 mil in his face who knows.  Personally, I'd like to wait and find out.  If no one really left has NY ties, which apparently is so important, why not go after this guy and hope he turns out to be the next big time coach from a mid major.  He has already been tremendously successful.

These Butler type teams have runs like these, and then drop offs after the core leaves.
His kids play great defense, and that's because he's motivated them to do so.

I'd take him a minute. This NY connection crap is overrated IMOP.

He's been very loyal to his assistants through the years. Two of his guys, Ed Cooley and Bill Coen, have gone on to success. Unless his assistants didn't want to make the move, he's not going to abandon them for Pete Gillen or Hicks. Besides, Mo Hicks would have to take a paycut. ;)
