Also on Jay Williams:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=ys-agents031109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns on shady dealings and wooing NBA draft picks for an agent - Williams was working for an agency, Ceruzzi sports, and trying to bring in Kevin Love.  A good read from last year.

Long time lurker, first time poster.  One of my buddy's is an on air personality at ESPN and he had this to say re: Lavin and his staff:

"As for Lavin, I've gotten to know him well and I REALLY like him! Don't know what that means coaching wise, but he's an amazing dude and he's hilarious too. Very different kind of guy -- you'll like him.
He told me about Rohrssen and Leitao...I think if St. John's commits to him and the program its a done deal. He wants the job in a big way!"

Not sure why I insist on remembering J-Will as the #1 overall pick.

Yao!

Anyways what do you think about Jay Williams joining staff? What does he bring to the table? Along with Leitao. Who else would need to be added?

You gotta bring an X and O guy to the table.  Perhaps Jay is great at Xs and Os but we don't know that.  What Jay does is bring perspective from one of the top college point guards of all time who has won a title before.  He knows what it's like to win, he knows what must be done, and everything he learned coaching-wise comes from his time at Duke with Coach K, which is going to be great for our squad.  He will certainly help break the mindset/pattern of losing that has hurt this program for 7 years.  JWill is also a guy that all current high schoolers know, id imagine he'd be a great recruiter, and he will be a fantastic ambassador of the school.

I go for a good X and O guy and someone with NYC AAU connections.

Who are considered X and O guys?  I'm talking assistants that could be had?

Is anyone more familiar with Leitao than I am? Does he bring X/O to the table or is he more under the "recruiting" mold.

I see Jay being a great recruiter and more in player development than being the X/O guy. When I say great recruiter I mean a monster!

Seems like a good guy.  Was a heckuva college PG.  Not a big fan of his or Gottlieb's commentary but at least he's not annoying like Gottlieb.

Not a fan of Leitao as an X&O guy but obviously a name addition to the staff that has been a head coach at Depaul(NCAA appearance) and UVA.  As far as another X&O guy who knows?

Just thinking out loud.  A staff of Lavin, Leitio, Williams, Slice-  heavy duty recruiting potential.  All these guys are known for their recruiting, am i correct.  I'd rather leave one of these guys at home and score a tactician.
Or is one of these guys fit the bill?

Leitao was, at best, an average recruiter for a Power 6 conference head coach. Williams has no experience as a college assistant. Rohrssen was very effective at being able to sell recruits on Ben Howland and Jamie Dixon at Pittsburgh. He's had more trouble selling NY kids on himself as a head coach in the nearby Bronx. Of the four, the best recruiter has been Lavin, with Rohrssen as the other potentially excellent recruiter.

Zags tweeted "One fantasy coaching staff put forth by someone outside SJU: Lavin, Leitao, Jared Grasso, Kimani Young of New Heights"

Recruiting dream team for sure.  Wonder if we would keep on Oz or Billy Singleton for some continuity?

Maybe Lavin brings a former assistant like Jim Saia on board.  Looking at his record as a head man its not too shabby.  Taking his brief USC out of the equation.
Remember who broke the Slice news

Imagine for a second the winning pedigree of this staff:

Lavin - Elite 8 and five Sweet Sixteens as a hea coach, National Champion as an Assistant
Leitao - National Championship as assistant coach for Uconn
Jay Williams - National Champion as starting PG
Slice - Two Sweet Sixteens with Pitt

That is THREE national champions!!! Not to mention, countless NBA players produced between
the coaches.

Marillac, let it happen (any semblance of it) before getting so worked up (you were going nuts when Hewitt was a possibility). I'm afraid your head is going to explode.

Can the man agree to a six year contract before we put his staff together?

Yes...this is a message board.  No speculation allowed! ;)

My gut is telling me this is premature.  I hope Dave's sources are right.

As a Mets and St. John's fan, I have to jump the gun and get excited because reality is rarely so kind to me as my dreams.

I hope this is true.  Even 2/3 I'd take happily.
