If he put Leitao and Rohrsson on his staff, we are in business.

wow.....Lavin and great assistants, if they could get a solid point guard, use Burrell the way he always should have been, and get the team to play much smarter on offense and D........now that would be a DANCING team for sure.

If he doesn't sign with an agent and the playing abroad rumors are false, I'd have to say it could really happen.  Syl LOVES Leitao.  We could find room very, very easily.  As I've said before, Rob Thomas is expendable.  He would almost certainly qualify for full aid + a stipend based on his financial situation and disabilities.  He could remain on the team.  It's a win-win.

This wrong, and it sounds worse every time you say it: let's throw the crippled guy overboard. Please stop.

I agree w foad. Suggesting rob, who by all accounts has worked very hard to get to this point,to be kicked off  would be awful
.

Want to mess with stith, fine, he's not a BE player and doubt he ever gets time with this staff. Robs got one more year.  We don't bail on the kid now.

I would normally 110% agree- When a kid commits to you & gives his all- never pull his 4 year scholarship.

BUT- this is currently Rob's 4th year. He started School in January 2007
(and we lost his scholarship spot 8/06-12/06)He was ruled ineligible till Dec 2007

Do you owe a kid a 5th year ? It should be the school's option (see Mase Jr)

I think the words "expendable" are too strong when talking about Rob. However, I don't think Marillac is saying to kick him off the team. I think he is trying to say we can take is scholarship and replace it with needs based aid from the school and other sources because of his situation. He would still remain with the team and his tuition would still be paid for. The only difference is we would have one more scholarship to use.

First off I think Lavin would be a great choice and it would be awesome that Monasch lucked into it.

On the Syl thing I am confused? Even if he did transfer wouldn't he have to sit out the year? Thus making whether Rob Thomas is expandable or not a moot point? Or do transfers sitting out a year require a scholie for the year they sit out?

Unless Syl is paying his way, it takes a scholarship spot.

(There would be many more transfers if that wasn't the case; teams would stockpile "transferred" talent.)

Rob Thomas has suffered through homelessness, disability, and the worse knee injury anybody's ever seen. He's overcome all that, he works hard, and he's seemingly a good citizen. Now he's going to be thrown overboard - and for Sylvan L, who flunked out of the school that he spurned SJ for two years ago, when it really really could have made a difference to SJ if he'd attended? I don't think so.

If Sylvan wants to go to SJ so bad, how about next year he takes out a student loan or gets a job like everyone else. Then he can have Rob's scholarship in two years. There'll be more than enough to go around by then.

5th years have to be needed and earned. I like ROb Thomas as a player but we need the scholarship more. For him to play next year anyway I think he would have to graduate.

Rob is a minority student with severe disabilities that is/was HOMELESS.  He will go to school for free and get himself a big stipend.  He is a great story, but he is useless to this team next year.

There is no way this kid pays a dime at STJ.  None.

Stith is also very expendable.  No need for him.  He is at best a year away from being able to be a quailty backup Big East PG.  It is very unlikely that a new coach couldn't find a better replacement for Stith immediately.

Also, there is the possibility of losing Ron Roberts.

Harsh.  Very harsh, Marillac.  Again, this isn't Kentucky basketball, and remember that someone has to be on the deep bench.

I think the next coach could not find a replacement for Stith immediately.  Who are you thinking of?  Who's unsigned out there?

Who is unsigned?  How about the TOP THREE point guards in the country!!  Also, #15 PG in the country and Doron Lamb a combo ranked #3 for shooting guards.

We didn't have a shot with guys like this under Norm, but Lavin knows how to close the deal.  If he puts Jay Williams on his staff, what PG in the world wouldn't want to play under J-Will!?!?  #1 overall pick not too long ago.

Marillac, #2 overall pick.  See the other thread.

I have a hard time believing Lamb or any other top pick is going to come for a guy who's been out of the game for 7 years.  Lav would need a few weeks to schmooze the AAU/ high school coaches.  7 years ago, Lamb was what, 11? 12? Not sure that the Lavin name rings out that well!

About Rob... IMO... he deserves a free education at St. John's no matter how long it takes him. If we can find another way for him to get a free education at the school and still play for the team... we should look into it. If we can't find a way... his scholarship should stay in place.

About Lavin (Since that's what the thread is really about)... If he signs on and gets even half of the staff mentioned in the JJ article... Monasch won't just hit a homerun... he will hit a grandslam!
