So what do you guys think about Lavin saying he wants to be at St. John's for a long time?

As with recruiting, I think he'll say what is necessary to sell the hiring panel on him. Norm said this was his "dream job," but, realistically, if he had been relatively successful here and KU had an opening for the head coach's position, he'd jump at that opportunity. Although Lavin spent some of his youth as a caddy for Keady, he and his wife have all of their ties in the West Coast. If we are fortunate enough to land him and he has a modicum of success, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes fishing for a similar Pac-10 position.

This better get done today. I keep googling Steve Lavin to see all the latest articles, and am checking here and twitter ever 10 minutes. I can't take this anymore.

Somebody posted in another thread that the UCLA players and fans hated him.

I'm assuming this is because he only got to one elite eight?

Yes...much like they hate Howland because he got to 3 straight final 4s and couldn't even win a title.

He's been on the East coast for a while now with ESPN.

Lavin would have gone to NC State in 2006 if his interest was just building a name for himself so he could move back west and coach.

The guy loves the spotlight, is a competitior, and wants to bring St. John's back.  He is the perfect man for the job.  His interests are totally aligned with ours.

Basically what happened with NC State Lavin was really interested but then he found out that NC State flew in Calipari on a charter flight along with his whole staff and he withdrew his name from consideration because he thought Calipari was going to take the job.

Dave,

I enjoy the site and what you bring, but, respectfully, you're mistaken on this one. Calipari had already turned down the position at NC State, prior to NC State's interest in Lavin. In fact, I happened to be in the Triangle the day Lavin "pulled his name" from the Wolfpack. It was the same day in April as John Beilein, the then WVU coach, declined the contract offer.

"Somebody" is full of crap. The fans did get frustrated with not getting to a Final Four, and Lav's losing season was the final straw. A nice run, but a marriage that had to end. You do know that UCLA's expectations are like 100X higher than St. Johns? Would you guys like to go to the Sweet 16 every year?

But the players mostly loved Lav, and Earl Watson is like a son to him to this day. You'd be hard-pressed to find players who don't like Lav, with the possible exception of Baron Davis, who's pretty much a total jerk.

I got that information 2nd hand from someone I don't know too well so yea that could certainly be wrong. Thats pretty interesting stuff and I know you're in the know with these things.  ;)

I have no idea who this prior poster was referencing, but, by contrast to your remark, this UCLA blog and the UCLA fans' comments don't seem exactly grateful for the Lavin era. Frankly, I'm surprised at the lasting vitriol towards Lavin. Perhaps, some of it is bitterness.

Needless to say, but, yeah, St. John's fans would sign for annual Sweet 16 appearances. Personally, I'll be thrilled just to see the uptick in recruiting.

Not sure if someone mentioned this or not.  Was watching one of those shows on SNY, wheelhouse or Loudmouths.  One of the guys was saying that Lavin was watching St.John's game film in Bristol while working this weekend.  Take it FWIW.

They should have used the money they used to build Taffner and the D'Angelo Center and put it towards a new on campus arena.
