yea, if it was totally untrue, lavin wouldnt have mentioned him on the air 2 hours ago as a possibility...remember, hes a head coach, under contract, so to talk to him they still have to go about things as if they were hiring him as one

I heard the same interview also.....there was another report stating Manhattan Coach was staying put...he like his young players etc.

Not a no-brainer on Hicks.  I'd start with a try at Grasso.  he brought talent to a 2-26 Fordham team.  That dude was working recruiting magic.

yea people say even with recruiting jio and gatson he still didnt do much but his overall recruiting for that program was spectacular considering its a academic school, mid major program, that was prob in the bottom 10 for worst programs in the country about 3 years running

i think the jay williams discussion goes hand in hand with Mark jackson in a way. Many believe mark would have a huge impact on recruiting in terms of NYC kids wanting to learn from one of the best. Jay did not do it for long at the next level unfortunately, especially as a bulls fan myself, but he did do it on the collegiate level where these kids will be. He was the guy that ran the ship on an national championship team as well. I think jay williams as an assistant would be awesome.

I agree, kinda. True, both Jackson and Williams are similar in that they don't have any previous coaching experience. And true, they were both great point guards on the court. But the BIG difference is their age. When J-Will was winning a national championship at Duke, these HS recruits were 7-9 years old, probably just getting into watching college ball. In comparison, when Mark Jackson was in the Final Four for the Johnnies, these kids were 7-9 years from being BORN. Yeah, the fact he is Mark Jackson and is a big part of SJU history would be cool to add to a staff. But after you get over the nostalgia, how much of an impact would it really have? Jay Williams is a name these kids know and someone the kids in the Metro area can relate to. He's learned from one of the best in Coach K, but wants to make a name for himself outside of Duke Unviersity. I think Jay Williams is a must get for Lavin's staff and we should all want him here. Come to Jamaica, J-Will!

I would take him as something like an intern, because he's a name.
But we need a seasoned staff, and if he's learning on the job, that's fine,
but he start in an entry level position.

There are different levels of assistants which carry different responsibilities. Someone who has won a national championship and was a lottery pick in the NBA certainly has enough credentials to teach basketball as an assistant coach. Also his impact on recruiting due to his fame, age, and charisma would be instrumental. I think he'd be a GREAT addition.

Jay Williams is still a huge name in the New Jersey HS circuit, FWIW.

Gene Keady as Consultant?
« Reply #47 on: March 30, 2010, 08:58:18 PM »
Lavin mentioned reaching out to the former Purdue coach as a consultant, says Keady's interested in living in NY 6 months out of the year from Oct to April.  Wants strong head coaching experience on his staff.

Also mentioned St. John's potential, joked with Fraschilla + Raftery, made some corny analogies (I love it), talked about reaching out to ADs to speak to head coaches to join his "dream team" staff (doesn't want to be unethical), wants to be strong recruiting the northeast/ NY, and mentioned recruiting internationally.

He did talk about Norm's grace and class.  I think Norm's a runway model.

Exactly. That would be a huge asset to our recruiting, especially for Lavin whose roots are mostly out West. Like Dave said, every assistant has their responsibility (although I honestly couldn't tell you what each member of Norm's staff did). Plus, do you really want a staff full of ex-head coaches? To me, that's like assembling a team of 5 all-stars in the NBA. It rarely works for chemistry and ego purposes. I think Jay will do wonders for our local recruiting, and that's worth it in itself. Maybe he can even teach Boothe a jumpshot???

Great news! Lavin needs to get this done, Williams could work wonders with our guards and would attract some nice talent

Every  good staff needs the "cool coach" that players can confide in and serve as an intermediary.  A coaching staff is funny that way. You need the "bad guy"--usually the coach responsible for the conditioning at the end of practice.  When things get rough, you send in the cool coach to smooth t over.  Jay would be PERFECT because how could you not look up to a lottery pick that won the national championship?

He'd be an amazing recruiter as well.  He's arguably better for us for all the same reasons we considered Mark Jackson and we potentially have him as our THIRD assistant!!?!?

Would Mark Jackson be interested in being an assistant? A 2nd or 3rd assistant at that?

Again - Mark's NBA career is my rearview and I'm 33.  Jay Will is also on TV, but was a recent NBA player and a recent college All-American.  Also, and admittedly this is just from his TV work and Twitter, I think he's always seemed like a smart guy, the kind of guy my mother would see on TV and think, look at that polished young man (actually something she said when watching Grant Hill in '94 with me).

Marillac is VERY right - he could definitely be the "cool coach."  And I thought he picked up the announcing very well between his year off of the NBA and when he gave it up for good, hopefully he can pick up aspects of coaching and scouting well.

You want to poll the average kid who is #2 all time in the NBA in assists? They'd say Jason Kidd? Steve Nash?  and the only throw back name would be Magic Johnson? John Stockton?

Mark Jackson is the bigger name.  And its not that close.  Its not meant to be a slight to Williams.  That being said I like Jay Will even though he went to Duke...and since he grew up in Jersey you gotta think he would be able to connect with the Metro Area kids.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

As far as I know, Jay still plays in alot of local NJ gyms and still has plenty of connections in the area.

Sorry, but Mark Jackson is extremely far removed from what would be expected out of a lower assistant--and wouldn't even take the job from what's been said anyways.

There or their(?) is no way Jackson comes in as an assistant. Get Jay Williams here, end of story
