A search that had more twists and turns, ups and downs, than Coney Island's iconic Cyclone roller coaster came to an exhilarating finish this afternoon with St. John's nation ready for the ride of their lives.

As reported originally on The Post's Web site last night, Steve Lavin, who led UCLA to six NCAA tournament appearances in seven seasons, will be introduced as the Red Storm's new coach at a press conference Wednesday.

It will be the first public step in convincing New Yorkers that Lavin, a West Coaster, has even heard of Coney Island, hotbed of some of the city's best prep talent.

"Ex-UCLA coach Steve Lavin has been hired by St. John's to head the Red Storm.

Details of the agreement on a $9- to $9.5-million, six-year deal were finalized on campus Tuesday. He will also have a handsome budget to hire assistant coaches.

A news conference to introduce Lavin as head coach is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The timing of the announcement could depend on when Lavin's wife and parents can get to New York.

St. John's bids for Florida coach Florida coach Billy Donovan and Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt didn't work out. But it didn't keep the Johnnies from landing themselves a big-ticket, big-name coach. The New York Daily News first reported Lavin's candidacy on Friday.

Lavin was interviewed over a lengthy dinner Monday night at a Tribeca restaurant by St. John's athletic director Chris Monasch. In an
email message to the Daily News early Tuesday morning he said it was a "great dialogue.""

An excellent job by Monasch. If Lavin can get half the assistants that have been rumored I think we are in for a great ride.

We are BACK.  Fantastic hire.  We can all breath again.   Lets give coach Lavin unconditional support for the next couple of years as he hopefully builds our Alma mater back into a perennial threat.

Homerun hire.  For the last few years I was in for a handful of games but I'm thinking of re upping for the season next year.  This completely re-energizes the team and the fanbase.
