Great hire by Monasch.  Killed me to not renew season tix this year but I was disgusted with the decision making.  I'll be back next year and St. John's will be back!!!

if we didnt get lavin, i would have wanted pecora next over fran or willard or skinner...fordham got a great hire too, good week for area schools :)

I'm really excited. This will be my first season as a St. John's fan and I hope to attend a game.

As excited as I am to see what he can do one the court for us, i'm much more excited to see what he does on the recruiting trail. Time to get to work Steve!

Great hire by SJU. I am excited to see who he adds to his staff. There are a ton of names out there and if he can land a couple infuential NYC guys SJU can be very dangerous.

Red Storm Director of Athletics Chris Monasch announced on Tuesday that Steve Lavin - whose seven-year coaching record at UCLA included six NCAA Tournament appearances, five trips to the NCAA Round of 16, and six seasons of 21 wins or more - will be the 19th head men's basketball coach in St. John's University's 102-plus years of storied tradition on the hardwood.

"Today is the start of a new era in the venerable history of St. John's basketball," Monasch said. "Steve brings the skill set and persona that we feel gives us a chance to compete at the highest level in the BIG EAST. Since Coach Lavin was unveiled as a candidate, you could feel the excitement throughout the city. St. John's is poised to recapture its legacy as New York's college team."

I remember Dave and I were talking about the coaching situation at St. Johns, and I think this is a mutually good fit. I don't think Lavin is a great coach, but he recruits well and I think in NY, he'll be able to grab enough talent for St. Johns to finally start competing in the Big East again.

I hope the Ducks can outdo St. Johns by hiring Jamie Dixon, but that might be a stretch.

Anyway, nice hire for you guys!

Yeah, I haven't checked out this place in a while, so figured with the new hire, I'd chime in. I posted a link on my forum to your website so they can check out the hire, so expect lots of hits within the next day!

Um, basically the names I've been hearing frequently are Tubby, Dixon, Izzo, Alford. Turgeon and Donovan have both been scratched off. Personally, I think Izzo and Donovan are silly to mention, because pulling them in would take a miracle. There's some rumors sliding around that Dixon accepted the Oregon job, and it'll be announced after the final four.
