I wondered if we got Kadeem Jack to sign first then hired Mo Hicks would that be a loop hole?

Nope...2 years before expected or 2 years after actual enrollment you can not offer a contract for a noncoaching role.

The way I read it that means from today 4/16/10 we could not have anyone from Rice or Gauchos that either enrolled in the last 2 years or will enroll in the next 2 years.  So we could not get anyone from Rice or Gauchos(unless we could find a gray area since he was the director for the Gauchos...but I don't think there is) until the class of 2012 which would enroll in 9/2012.

Maybe It would make some sense to keep Cross on board because he's already onboard the rule would not affect him.

What Gauchos or Rice kids has he helped deliver?

I'm not sure where you're going with that.  Isn't Cross associated with the Panthers?  If Lavin wants an AAU guy in another admin role (e.g. Kimani Young) Cross would be a way around the rule.  Obviously that is not the sole consideration.

I have no idea if Cross has other players he's connected with that are any good for the next few classes.  He did "deliver" Omari and Justin.

I was not aware of Cross' ties to just the Panthers.  I interpreted your statement that Cross could serve that same purpose as Hicks and assumed that carried over to the Gauchos and/or Rice.

As for Cross he might have helped with Omari but Justin was already here. He might have helped 'keep' Justin or 'keep him in check' but thats pure speculation.

Isn't it 2 years before, 2 years after?  Don't see the loophole...

when it comes down to it i think lavin has to ask, who is more worth it, Hick or Jack, if jack dose decide to come to st johns. say that we decide on jack, do you think that leaves the door open for hicks to favor st johns when it comes to recruits or do you think it makes it harder? if its from a recruiting stand point i think we are better off no hiring hicks

I like Hicks a lot, but no Gaucho or Rice player for two years?  That really leaves an already thin NYC class very weak.

There's zero chance we hire Hicks as one of the assistant head coaches?

There aren't many out there actually.  Others have listed the names.  Jermaine Sanders and Omar Calhoun are two future ones in addition to Kadeem Jack.  The price you pay in the short term has long term benefits.

Essentially it would be the class of 2011 (since 2010 is basically done).  I don't believe the class of 2012 (Calhoun) would be affected because they don't enroll for more than 2 years from now.

I have seen Jack play a few times on TV. He is very athletic and I am sure he would make a great addition to our team. But he was far from dominant when I saw him. Hicks is one of the best HS coaches in the country. In the long run he is way more valuable.

Lavin also is expected to announce the hiring of Rice coach Mo Hicks. Hicks and Tony Chiles, Lavin's first hire, should make St. John's a player in the recruitment of any elite player in the city.

With this two year thing, I was talking with someone about Omar Calhoun, who is the best rising junior in the city and plays for the Gauchos. He thinks the window would enable Lavin to go after him-perhaps, even if they decide to have Hicks stay as the AAU honcho through the end of July (assuming Calhoun doesn't take any summer classes as an entering college freshman at STJ).

Thats the way I read it ...Calhoun's enrollment would not be expected until September 2012.  So we should be fine with anyone in the class of 2012.
