How tall is Polee? Kenyon Martin is 6'9, but he was great around the basket. Loved watching Jason Kidd work with Martin

From ESPN insider :

http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/features/rumors?date=20100506

St. John's landed its first major recruit of the Steve Lavin era when Dwayne Polee, Jr. committed to play for the Red Storm, choosing the Johnnies over his other finalists Georgia and Oregon.

Polee is a 6-foot-7 small forward prospect out of California who is known for his athleticism and ability to throw down electrifying dunks. He is still raw in certain areas, and needs to work on his shooting, but he is the type of player who would seem to be capable of having an immediate impact.

So how much will he play? It's hard to read at this point, given that St. John's returns all five of its starters and several pivotal bench players. It would be shocking if Polee doesn't make it into Lavin's rotation based on talent alone, and considering the fact that he is the coach's first recruit, it's not unreasonable to think he'll have a chance to earn a starting job by the time the Red Storm's season starts.

The Johnnies will be able to use Polee in the same mold as D.J. Kennedy or (before he was injured) Anthony Mason Jr. -- someone who can quickly get up and down the floor and fill the passing lanes. One aspect of his game that Polee needs to improve on is his rebounding. With his long arms, he should be able to fervently attack the glass, but there were times when his rebounding was inconsistent as a prep. SJU finished in the middle of the pack in rebounding in Big East play last season, so if Polee can help them in that area it will be harder for Lavin to keep him off the floor.

With the first key recruit in place, we'll have to see how many more Lavin can bring in.

Scouts, Inc.

Dwayne Polee

"Polee is a high major athlete that can run and jump with the best of them and is a big time finisher in transition, but he lacks the consistency of an outside shot that will help open driving lanes to the basket. He has a nice handle in the open floor and is a long strider that covers a lot of ground in a hurry. He is long and athletic enough to be a very good defender if he puts his mind to it and could be an excellent addition to a team that utilizes a pressing system. As a wing player he needs to more active on the glass on both ends."

Steve Lavin has already made a splash at St. John's - and proven he can recruit top West Coast talent to New York City.

St. John's landed a commitment from Dwayne Polee, a 6-foot-7 small forward from Los Angeles Westchester on Thursday, a big-time pickup for Lavin, who took over for Norm Roberts and used to coach at UCLA.

"With Lavin as the head coach, St. John's now has a reach from coast to coast," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer said. "Not only will it be an attractive place to East Coast basketball players but Lavin's ties to the West Coast will help lure West Coast talent to The Big Apple as is the case with Polee."

Lavin's West Coast ties were a major bonus and Dwayne Polee, Sr., told The Los Angeles Times that his son "was in love with coach Lavin" and that "Lavin is a West Coast guy and he was comfortable with him."

"Polee is one of the more athletic players in the 2010 class so that alone makes him a very intriguing prospect," Meyer said. "He has work to do as far as developing his skills but I expect him to really improve during his time in college."

On Thursday, St. John's landed their first West coast recruit 6-7 small forward Dwayne Polee, Jr. from Westchester HS in Los Angeles.

After weighting in all of his options, Polee finally chose the Big East School. Polee explained what led him to choosing the Johnnies ."I felt the staff at St. Johns and coach Lavin would make me a better player," said Polee. The forward had already come to the St. John's campus for a school visit. "I came to NY for a school visit mid-March, the week after he (Lavin) got the job," said Polee.

"Yeah, the weather it's a big difference but I have been back east during the winter time with my team. I know about the NY media. I will not let that affect me in anyway," said Polee.

The forward said that he is excited about playing in the Big East and spoke about what he will bring to table. "I bring athleticism. I can get up and down the court. I plan on bringing the fire to the Garden," said Polee.

"This summer, I will be in summer school at St John's, July 6th."
