Quinn Cook Talks St. John's
by Alex Schwartz

DeMatha (MD) star Quinn Cook is one of the best point guards in the class of 2011.

With the St. John's Red Storm having nine scholarships for the class, Cook is a player that the new staff, under Steve Lavin, has been targeting. He took some time to go over the current status of his recruitment while at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions with his AAU squad, DC Assault.

Villanova, Georgetown, Rutgers, UCLA, Arizona, Wake Forest, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Washington, St. John's, "and a few more" are the programs that Cook said are under consideration. He said that he has an offer from each of those schools, aside from UNC.

As it stands now, Cook does not have any favorite in his recruitment. Nonetheless, he does know what he wants in his future college. "Connection with the coach, exposure, playing time and somewhere where I can go and win," said Cook of what he is looking for in a school.

Cook plans to take his time before making his college choice, and could even end up waiting until the spring to sign, as he wants to take his allotted official visits.

I'd be very surprised if Quinn comes here.

More Quinn Cook info from this weekend....

Quinn Cook, PG- The Hyatsville (Md.) Dematha standout was easily one of the best scorers on the floor Friday night. He's neither super quick or athletic, but the six footer is very crafty and skilled with the ball. He hit on jumpers, some tough drives in transition and dribble pull-ups. His game features lots of spin and hesitation moves that he's able to pull off without losing balance because of his superior body control.

Quinn Cook will stick around Sunday and visit UCLA before heading to Arizona on Monday. He is contemplating nine schools including North Carolina, Wake Forest, Villanova, Georgetown, Rutgers, St. John's and North Carolina State. All but North Carolina have offered.

I saw Quinn last night. He played well in the one game. His two issues from a pro perspective will be lateral quickness on defense and his height (an actual 5'9-10").

I saw and spoke with Quinn again today. He didn't think he could make the Arizona trip now, due to a bad job of booking by an adult in his life. He played really well again this weekend. He'd have the highest basketball IQ of any STJ pg since at least Jackson.

Any idea from talking to him if STJ is starting to make an impression on him?

"As for St. John’s, Cook said “Coach Steve Lavin reached out to me and told me he’s been interested.”

"Arizona, Connecticut, UCLA, Georgetown, and St. John's have all been on me the hardest of late. I think I have elevated my game and coaches are starting to notice more. Overall I like all the schools on my list and I'm looking for one where I can have the best career. One with an up tempo offense and with a great coach."

If he truly means what he says, you can cross of UCLA and Georgetown, as neither team plays uptempt.  Howland preaches defense first and controlled, slower offensive sets. Thompson prefers to slow it down as well.
Lavin and Dunlap both said they want to run.

Remember, Marillac....  Cook only said, those are the schools that have been on him the hardest.  Not that those are the schools he's settled on.  Quite frankly, I have a feeling a couple of other schools may turn it up a notch on him before it's all said done.

Nevertheless, I think you're right in your assessment of the schools that like to run and not run.  Although, the "Hated Hoyas" has a controlled-like tempo with their Princeton scheme....  They are capable of running.  It's not the style of running ala UCONN, but running nonetheless.

Once again....  I believe, if we can get Cook in on an official visit then my confidence level rises on the possibility of him being a Johnnie.

Quinn Cook (DC Assault)- There is a reassuring quality to the composed way he handles the basketball. Cook is also one of the better long range and midrange shooters off the dribble in the class. He put up big scoring numbers Thursday.

I talked to Quinn yesterday. He said St. John's is still on his list, but I'd be shocked if he landed in Queens. Lavin was front row for Josiah Turner and Nick Johnson again today-along with Calipari and Howland.

Quinn is a DCA kid through and through and they're not sending anyone to Georgetown.
Cox went to Rutgers and suddenly they land Jordan Goodman.

No Uconn or Rutgers.......

"Cook said he has narrowed his list to seven East coast and two West coast teams: Arizona, UCLA, Villanova, Duke, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, West Virginia, St. John’s and Georgetown. He has not decided which five schools he will officially visit starting in September."

Nothing really new.
Usual kind words for Lavin.
If Duke officially offers him over Josiah Turner, it's over, unless Carolina makes a last ditch effort.

I noticed a handful of G'town fans who feels he's Duke's to lose.  I read somewhere a few months ago about his supposed-love for Duke and UNC.

I've always kinda felt it would be an uphill climb for us behind those schools.  But, I also believe we'll end up in his final 5 schools.  I'm hoping the longer it drags out (for those two schools to officially offer); he'll start to look towards playing at other schools.  We shall eventually see.

Nevertheless, I'd rather be his numero uno, but I'd take a committment from Cook by default.

Heck!  Word was we got our last Cook by default.   LOL

From same Zags article linked above:
Cook said he was also considering Big East locals St. John’s and Rutgers.

“I had a chance to form a relationship with Coach [Steve] Lavin,” he said of St. John’s. “He’s a real cool guy.
Hopefully during the season I could watch them and see how he runs the team.
 I’m definitely interested in them.”

a little better than just "kind words".  I like that he's interested in how Lavin & staff run the team.
