Oh, okay.  I didn't know his birthdate.  I, figured you couldn't play AAU ball once you turned 19.  Maybe, he's gonna play in the Sonny Hill League.

You need to check the rules, cutout date could be earlier. My son will be play 17u and 18u baseball in Georgia but will already be 18 in July because cutout date in 17 or younger as of April 1, 2012. Not sure this is the case with basketball but it could be 18 as of 1-1-12 for example.

I'm sorry, but what perennial dreamers on this board.  All I read is how we'll end up signing this guy and that guy etc. etc., and through that same period of time/3 months and in reality we lost half our team to either academic casualties or transfers and/or decommitments.

I like Steve Lavin and I feel very bad for him and his current battle with cancer, and I think he's a good recruiter and very decent classy man, but this program is in big trouble right now yet again as if the majority of past 10 very underwhelming years wasn't bad enough.  This program still lacks a true dominant Center and has for a long long time, and we're currently short (5) scholarship players.  Syracuse just beat us for what seems like the 1,000th straight time now.  God forbid if we ever stuck it to that creep Boeheim even once, that would be long overdue and justified, but NO.  Forget this season, this season is long gone already and if Lavin doesn't start righting the ship fast and start landing some new recruits and start holding on to the ones that he lands than next season is going to be over with fast as well and Lavin will unfortunately begin to be on the hot-seat.

I didn't want to start a new thread, and Pelle is just one of the many recent recruits that we've currently and maybe permanently lost.  If you have a better thread or board to fit my post in than by all mean go ahead.

I think we'll be hard pressed to land Pelle, Gathers & Sampson again.  If we end up with even one of those three I'd be pleasantly surprised.

"Mess"?  What do I personally have to do with the mess of losing Pelle, Sampson, Gathers, Lindsey, Polee etc. etc.?  All I'm doing is repeating the facts that you and others on this board seem to be having a difficult time accepting as reality.  As you can tell, I don't enjoy kidding myself about my team chances of being successful.  No wonder we've had a losing product around here in basketball for the last several years, and that can be correlated to having a losing culture including our own fan-base that accepts below mediocrity as a result and than defends it on top of that, and how dare someone like me decides to discuss it, because they'll be promptly shown the door for being the sole voice for obvious needed change.  It goes on deaf ears.  "Ignorance is bliss"

Are you satisfied with losing?  Because if you are than keep doing what your doing and you'll become an inadvertent barrier to future success.

God do I miss Louie a Joe.

You have nothing personally do with losing those kids.  Pelle may or may not ever play collegiately.  Same for Lindsey (he might not play college hoops again).  Lindsey was also becoming a problem, so it was better to part ways.  Polee's situation had more to do with his dad more than anything.

Sampson would be here and playing, if he wasn't ineligble.  Lavin is going hard after him again and he hasn't signed anywhere, so why bitch about it?  The same for Gathers.  If those kids go elsewhere then you have every right to complain.  Otherwise, why bitch and complain when they haven't signed with another school yet?

This is only the staff second season.  They had to restock an entire team.  Not 3 or 4 players.  An entire roster.  Who also said anything about being satisfied with losing?  The staff won last season, but are having a rough time this season.  So, that suddenly means the program is falling?  Get real.

Lastly, I'm tired of whiners and complainers like yourself who make a comment and then always passing it off as reality.  Is that what they teach y'all in the book of whiners....  To pass everything off as reality?  More times than not, it's usually an opinion.

The ship has sailed for both STJ and Pelle. Someone asked if he were at Phelps, I passed on what I heard. People then get pissed because we lost him. Perhaps everyone in D1 lost him as well.

I'm not giving up hope with this staff until they are all gone (meaning Lavin, Dunlap, Chiles, Hines, and Hicks) We will get our share of recruits. Lavin has never failed at the recruiting game. We have short memories of bringing in  low D1 players and finishing 6-12 in Big East every year.

The detractors on this board need to Chill Out.

My whining has nothing to do with our lack of success just like your unrealistic optimisim has not made St. John's more successful.  "It is what it is".  What does the records/record book results read for St. John's basketball for the past 10+ years?  Lets stick to the facts/the results.  The results UNFORTUNATELY supports my opinion over the past 10+ and not yours.

Once again, I like Steve and unlike Norm Roberts, Lavin is an outstanding recruiter, but he's made the crucial mistake of going after too many borderline academic players and not seeing them actually get to play here, and it's tough to BUILD a program that way.

Doesn't AAU really end @ 17U or 18U..?

Guys run with older guys in the 17's. Frown upon, yes but post grad players do it.

There are also tournaments which feature "Open" divisions which are intended for post grad players.

I would agree with you that Lavin perhaps should have added a few SAFE guys but he rolled the dice and lost. You don't win NCAA tourney games with the SAFE guys but you win wiith top talent. Made things look terribly worse because he had no existing roster to fall back on.

I would ask how many teams in college basketball have a true center but we'll start small. How many teams in the Big East have a true center?

Unrelated to that true positions in the game now are fading. There are so many combo/hybrid players out there and thats where the game is moving.

Where do you see my unrealistic optimism?  Enlighten me, genius.  "It is what it is."  That is a trite word.  Use another word to get your point across.

What does 10 years have to do with Steve Lavin and his staff?  It has nothing to do with him and his staff.  The last 10 years is irrelevant when it comes to the current staff.  So, you can flush your facts and results of the past decade.  A weak attempt to argue your point.

He had to replenish an entire roster and took some chances.  If he had gone after a top 250-300 guy, then you would've been up in arms complaining again.  The staff is only in their second year.  It takes more than two years to build a program.  You're just being silly and unreasonable.

The game is so different than 20 years ago. Athletes have changed. Game has evolved for the most part into athletes running the floor on both ends of the court. I agree with you. No need to have a 6-10 center when you could have a 6-8 guy with long arms who can run with the guards.

who recruited those players?  EX: Lindsey, Pelle etc.?  See what I'm saying.  What are you defending?  You can't defend Lavin here if Lavin recruited them.  I too like Lavin, but he has to take a hit here, because these are HIS recruits that didn't project or blend in here at St. John's.

We cannot afford another year of losing this recruit and this player on & on & on & on every two weeks again next September..., NOT ONE MORE and Lavin better start landing some players AND HOLDING ON TO THEM.  We're still 4 or 5 players short for next year.

No wonder we've had a losing product around here for the best several years, we have a losing culture that accepts below mediocrity as a result and than defends it on top of that.

Are you satisfied with losing?  Because if you are than your becoming an inadvertent barrier to future success.

Let's not turn this is me vs you thing. Guys can share their opinions. Whining about whining or complaining about complaining is just as bad and triggers more whining and complaining. Make sense?

He thinks St. John's needs a true center and high quality academic players. That's not unfair to say. To a degree who can really argue with that?

I personally think it's unrealistic to grab 9 ivy league scholars with NBA talent in your first recruiting class but apparently some think thats possible. It's hard playing catchup on the mid major level recruiting and it's even more difficult at the highest of high major level of recruiting. This staff is leaps and bounds ahead of the average curve and the talent brought in might be best ever for St. John's.

I think the quality of character that is on this team is tremendous. I'd be more than happy to sit in a trench with those kids. Sometimes things don't work out with some kids for a number of reasons. It happens. Move on. I'm not even sure why people are even posting about Pelle anymore.
