SJD, I guess the founder of johnny jungle and ultimate st johns fan deserves to be a huge homer, esp for a kid who dave went to college with for much of his career.

Your arguments are absurd dave, but I respect you backing your man.

Dave:

Most of the players you have named were far more accomplished than mase, both individual and team.  Wasn't dudley first team all big east?  Didn't aaron afflalo leave college early after leading his team to the final four? Matt carroll was an amazing shooter. Other guys benefitted by being great teammates on great teams. None - to my knowledge - are injury prone.

No one you listed, to my knowledge, were as hyped as mase in a big conference yet underperformed there and then made it. The "surprises" were guys that played at lower level colleges where its harder to be noticed.

Mase would get his shit torn up by nearly everyone on that list. No joke.

Mase is a great athlete and that makes him appealing to NBA teams because if you are very athletic you can cover up for the parts of your game that you struggle with. I personally dont think Mase is anywhere near talented enough to play in the NBA. He should go play and Europe and make his money there. He wasnt even the best player on a lower level Big East team last year, hes not NBA caliber in the least. Good luck to him in Europe, if an NBA team drafts him they are making a mistake.

I also think Mason can play SG in the NBA.

That is comical...   what single thing does he do well enough to play #2 in the NBA. He is NOT a good shooter, he is a terrible ball handler handler and he is a TERRIBLE defender. He did rebound well for a wing in college but not well enough to get a spot in the NBA.

A terrible defender? really? I really disagree here. Mase was a good on ball defender in addition to off the ball. He altered and blocked shots and disrupted passing lanes.

We also witnessed Mason play on a depleted St. John's squad in one of the worst offensive schemes ever witnessed and in some ways he actually shined despite that.

I think Mason needs to work on a lot of things if he truly wants to play in the NBA but he certainly possesses attributes and qualities that could enable him to make it.

Anthony Mason trying to guard Kobe Bryant or Dwyane Wade or Ray Allen would be comical.  Mase is very far from being an NBA player, and IF he becomes one, it will be at small forward.  He doesn't have the handle or shooting consistency OR defense to guard quick shooting guards.  Not gonna happen.

He might make a team for a few years as an end of the bench guy, but guys like Mase are a dime a dozen, and the others aren't nearly as injury prone.

Mase should go to Europe, shack up in a villa with some greek women giving his aching body massages all day long, and make some $ while enjoying his 20s.  No shame at all in that.

So now we're going from making a team to guarding the 3 best SG in the NBA. Mason is every bit as quick/strong as Jared Dudley and he didn't do so bad against Kobe. Either way I'm not painted Mason to be a lock down defender but he could hold his own.

Name a SG Mase CAN compete with in the NBA?  Iguodala? Joe Johnson? Manu Ginobili? Eric Gordon? Ben Gordon? Richard Hamilton? Gilbert Arenas? Come on....

Aaron Affalo
Daequan Cook
Mardy Collins
Matt Carroll
Carlos Delfino
Willie Green
Francisco Garcia
Luther Head
Jarvis Hayes
Trenton Hassell
Malik Hairston
Cedric Jackson
Dahnty Jones
Courtney Lee
Jamario Moon
Mike Miller
Adam Morrison
CJ Miles
Jodie Meeks
Roger Mason
Steve Novak <--- I still hate him for killing us in BET
Kevin Ollie
Ronnie Price
Mo Peterson
Aleksandar Pavlovic
Anthony Parker
Quinton Ross
Q Richardson
Garrett Temple
Jermaine Taylor <--- Central Florida
Reggie Williams <---- did you really know about him out of virginia military?
Sonny Weems
Kyle Weaver
Mario West
Antoine Wright

man you are giving this kid a lot of credit...he couldnt hang with those types of kids when they were in college, why could he now that they're pros, and hes regressed

Question was who could he compete with. He can certainly compete with those guys for a roster spot. Will he beat them out? Maybe yes, maybe no but he can certainly compete with them.

of course he can compete with them at some level...we were at the bottom of our league this year, but we competed with good teams...but there were still about 60 teams in this country better than us...just like that, mason can compete but there are many guys in the world that can compete better than him, many guys...enough to make sure mase stays in europe for a while, if u catch my drift

I never said Mason was better than any of these guys (maybe a few of them but not all) but he can certainly compete with them. You said he couldn't defend guys in the NBA who play the 2 and I think Mason could hold his own guarding some of those guys.

Does this mean I think Mason will make the NBA? No.

Am I rooting for Mason to make the NBA? Hell yea

Is it fun tracking his workouts and checking on his progress? Most definitely

@SJD I think our team severely underachieved. I truly believe a lot of these guys have untapped potential and I think Mason with proper schooling and more regimented training program he could really blossom into something more. I'm not even sure if that something more is enough to get him in the NBA but thats what these NBA scouts are determining during his workouts.

dave, i completely agree that in time he could be nba ready...if he works at it he probably will be...but not now...let him go to europe, get stronger and improve the areas that need improvement and come back in 2 or 3 years and be a contributor to an nba team and not a bench warmer and practice player

JJ Redick was a deadly option for the Magic in the playoffs.  He's their 6th or 7th man.  His basketball IQ is through the roof, and he has worked on his defense to become a good NBA player.

This season he averaged 9.6 points per game in 22 minutes per game.  His assist to turnover ratio is about 2.5:1, he shot 44% overall, and 41% from 3.   In the playoffs, the offense flowed much better with him in, and the Magic should have played him more.

Your hatred for Duke is just ridiculous.  There is plenty of things to make fun of Duke for, but JJ Redick as a basketball player is not one of them.  Shelden not even being able to hold onto a rebound for the Celtics is funny.  JJ is a professional, and a decent NBA player at that.

It seems that all my pithy responses to this post were deleted by management, whereas your offensive and petty name calling stands unredacted. No matter. Perhaps the censors decided that you need protection, as it's well known that most pUkIeS are quite delicate, even when fortified by several Zimas.

Regarding Reddick "being a deadly option in the playoffs", in the playoffs he shot 40 percent from the floor and averaged 7 points a game. I wouldn't consider that "deadly," although it is in line with his career NCAA tournament shooting percentage of 38 percent, which shooting killed dEwK on more than one occasion. LSU in the house.

Regarding the rest of it, the rap star JJ Reddick is a shooting guard who shoots 40 percent from the floor and who's averaged an otherworldly 7 points, 1 assist, and 1 rebound per game over the course of his NBA career. He is also a ridiculously bad athlete - slow of foot and pasty of skin, with the leaping ability of a footstool -  which is one of the reasons he's perhaps the worst defensive player is the NBA, a league where unfortunately for JJ and the rest of Shrewscnecky's charges throwing oneself to the floor and writhing around is not considered a viable defensive posture, as it is at the finest Ivy League School in all of the Carolinas.

You are of course free to believe that a guy who spent much of his career as the 8th or 9th man on a middling team averaging 7 points a game is worth a first round pick and an inflated 4 million dollar annual salary (by way of comparison, 4 million is what Tyreke Evans makes). I can only reiterate that I'd much rather have an undrafted Mason at the end of the bench, at say 1 million per, shooting a deadly 40 percent from the floor and averaging 5 points and 2 or 3 rebounds per game. As usual, YMMV.

1) What does his skin tone have anything to do with what kind of athlete he is?

2). Mason could never shoot 40 percent taking the shots JJ takes.

3). It is obvious you haven't watched him play recently. He's developed his game enormously and is a decent defendr and athlete. his career ppg averages are stupid bc he didn't play very many minutes early on. He did well in 22 mins per game this year and will do better next year.

Besides that being irrelevant and unprovable, who cares? Mason wouldn't have take the shots JJR does, because he's quick enough to free himself from defenders and can jump more than two inches off the ground.

Well off course I haven't watched him play recently, because he from DeWk and I loathe doOk and I don't live in Orlando and I hate Florida and I couldn't give two excrements about the NBA since Dave Bing retired. I can however read a dictionary and a stat line with the best of them, which is how I know that shooting 40 percent from the field and averaging 7 points a game doesn't qualify as a "deadly option," even for a graduate of a school that's produced a nearly unbroken line of NBA busts and buffoons.

Maybe he catches a Summer League invite from someone to fill out a roster but I hope he has his passport in order.

They were the six seed. They weren't that bad. Jennings, bogut, redd, salmons (though he's a fa), etc.
