Asked Bossi and Meyer about why Greene wasn't ranked on the Rivals board.  This was Bossi's response-

Was hoping you could touch on Phil Greene a bit. I thought I read he was picked as MVP of his IMG team over Daniels and Traylor. Seeing Traylor on the list but no Greene?

I think Greene is a very good high school player but am not sure what role he plays at the high major level and see him as a mid/high major bubble guy. Don't see him as a point, but he isn't really a two either. Will score some, but not overly athletic. Would probably put him in the top 175-200 range, so he's not a slouch by any means!

With Traylor, can seem him as a role/specialist rebound and energy guy at a high major.

Daniels didn't play a game at IMG after the first week of December.

I have seen several videos of Greene.  Bossi is underrating his athleticism.  The kid is fast in the open court and a very good athlete overall.  175-200 range is absurd IMO.  If that is the case, then why is Myles Mack and Elijah Carter in the top 115?   Mack is a tweener guard and is really undersized.  IMO similar in game to Greene except a bit shorter.

Exactly, MCN!  Bossi is definitely underrating Greene's game.  Greene is quite fluid and does exude athleticism.  He may not be in the class of guys like Pointer, Pelle and Garrett when it comes to athleticism, but he is athletic.  I liked what I've seen of Greene (briefly, in person) and per videos to know he is a pretty decent athlete.  Not to mention, somewhat crafty.

For what its worth, ESPN has him ranked 91 and Traylor 89. They call him "a shifty ball handler". He could add some strength,which will come with time and can use improvement with his 3 point shot. He sounds like he may be a better PG then SG(a 92 ranking is 4 star). What's more important than rankings is his future play.

That is the scouting grade and not their ranking.

You are correct, I meant scouting grade. Although a grade of 91 is pretty good.

FWIW Hoopmasters (Coleman/Gibbons) have him at 141 though I'm not sure when they last updated their rankings.

Nice write up Peter!  I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind:
1.) Do you think Greene can handle playing pg from what you saw from his handle, passing and court vision?
2.) Any reason he didn't play a lot of minutes? (not sure you would know the answer)

The game was an all-star game, so a lot of guys got chunks of minutes - each time had 3 rotations of 5 and 4 12 minute quarters. I couldn't say why he didn't get more minutes; his unit started the second half and seemed to cut into the West Side's lead a little... but really, the South Side got smoked early. I don't think he was the highest impact guy on his side, but none of them seemed really in sync like the West's starting 5, where 3 of the guys had played together and the other 2 played with each other.

Again, it's an all star game, so grain of salt.

As for handling the PG, yes, in a sense. He has enough dribble and penetration ability in an open game. Does he have the mental game to play PG, run a team? I don't know, can't tell. Looked like he did a lot of dribbling to free himself up in the half court. But again, it's an all-star game, that's what guys do.

Greene chose St. John’s University, which enjoyed an NCAA Tournament appearance and 21 wins in Steve Lavin’s first year as head coach.

“I’m a city kid, so I like the city,” said Greene, who hails from Chicago. “They are in the spotlight, so I get to play Madison Square Garden almost every home game, and the style of play was easy for me to choose.”

The Red Storm, who play in the vaunted Big East, qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign last season.

Greene’s training at IMG Academies helps make the transition to the college game a little smoother.

“They have the best facilities in the nation,” said Greene, who also thought about heading home for college ball at DePaul. “The coaches really know what they’re doing. They’re professionals, so they know what it takes to get to that level.”

Do people just sit and wait to take shots at Norm Roberts. Im surprised people arent still starting posts bashing him constantly (maybe mods are preventing it).

We all know the job Norm did at St Johns but give it a rest already. He didnt hire himself and didnt pay himself for 6 years. Anyone who thinks he did something wrong and needs to keep putting him down needs to look in the mirror.

Jarvis did a lot more damage to SJBB than Roberts. When Jarvis took over the program was great when he departed the program was in shambles.

The man took over a 6 win team and got them to 17 or 18 wins, that is improvement no matter how you look at it. Slow, painful, plenty of misses, absolutely but progress. Every kid graduated and no one embarrassed the program. Dont know which SJU team you follow but your facts are certainly mixed up.
