Redshirts?

23 is still 2 years older then he should be. My birthday is in Septmber when I started my senior year at SJU I was only 20. I love Paris and I am not trying to make a big deal of this but it is crazy how many players on all teams are old. Just a pet peev of mine. I coach Middle school baskeball and we lose more games then we win for the sole reason that the teams we play have older players. I would love to go on and rant, but it seems like I already took a shot at one of my favorite players. In middle school having 15/16 year olds is big advantage, in HS having 18/19 year olds is a a big advantage, in college having 23 year olds MEN is a huge advantage.

I was 22 when I graduated on time having never stayed back in school. Most of my peers were the same age if not older.

We need everyone on this roster next year.  All of our front court players give us something different:  Burrell can knock down the 10-15 footer well and is good for a highlight take the tin or three, JB2 is so adept in the running game, blocking shots off the ball, and working the baseline on offense, Evans is rough and tumble with great hustle.  Even Rob Thomas is an automatic four quick points and a handful of boards with his back-to-the-basket game.

DJ is the heart and soul.  Paris is not far behind and we need his outside shot and defense.  Hardy will be the x-factor IMO and we will go as both him and Boothe go.

Stith and Boothe are the only two PG's we have.  Q is somewhat expendable this year, but he already redshirted last year.  Polee will be a good energy guy to get the crowd going, and if we go a few minutes without a bucket, draw up an alley-oop to him.

We really need everyone.  You don't redshirt your only legit big man to add a win or two to what will probably be a 14-15 win team in 2011-2012.

I agree we could use everyone however I think you can make a strong argument that one of our big men could redshirt if he's only going to see the floor in limited action. 5-8mpg?

Could a rotation of Burrell, Evans, Brownlee, and Thomas be enough. I think so.

It's not far fetched to redshirt Coker to have him play 25+ the following year where the 2011 class is thin on big men.

no i was 17 turning 18. Graduated SJU at 21. Back on topic, I can't imagine any player agreeing to redshirt even if they were asked. Nothing to gain by staying another year. Like Marillac said we will need everyone this year. I am sure some of our players are excited to be getting a check to play next year. Anyone who doesn't contribute this year will realize their basketball days are coming to an end.

I was technically 15 when I left hs and started college at 16, but I remember the lady in admissions warning me about being young and the potential difficulties.

As a basketball player, they could get started on a graduate degree (law, etc.)--covered via the basketball scholarship. If they really pushed it, they could get two graduate school years paid for. (completing college in 3/ 2 years of graduate school) Players should milk the school for as much as they can.

As I think Moose pointed out, I'm sure Lavin doesn't WANT the mediocre guys around next year, and all the ones he would even consider wanting around, he needs this year.

I agree that Rob Thomas will have very limited play.

Are you including Omari Lawrence when you say "mediocre"?  Are their any big recruits in next years recruiting class that would serve us better than Coker would at this point?

  I'm actually a fan of Coker's.  I think with the new staff and his hard work, he can have a impact this year.  He's a borderline great shot blocker and has a nice little face up J.   We know he'll work hard, based on how much better shape he came in  last year. 

  I honestly don't see the upside of redshirting anyone.  Out with the old, in with the new.
