Though last night's exhibition was St. John's only tuneup before the season starts, new coach Steve Lavin couldn't have asked for a better debut. His team shared the ball on offense and swarmed on defense, got balance all around and got a dominating 100-42 rout over outmatched Westmont.
About the only thing that could have made it better was if blue-chip recruits Norvel Pelle and Amir Garrett, seated behind the Red Storm bench, had leaned over after one of St. John's array of poster-worthy plays, gave Lavin a pound and committed on the spot. That's the kind of laugher it was at Carnesecca Arena.
