Lavin has done a great job in bringing in new recruits for next year and creating a new buzz around the program. The one thing that I hope he can tackle is bringing back some of the old traditions. Here is a list of things that I hope he can control or have influence on:
1. Change the name back to Redmen! This is more of a symbolic gesture that I know Lavin has no control over. Many folks can agree that this program has never been the same since the name change.
2. Get rid of the black uniforms! As far as I know we are winless in these uniforms, and last night should prove once and for all that these uniforms are cursed!
3. Get rid of STJ and bring back SJU. I do not understand the initial change of STJ and the combination of the "J" and small "T" on the unifrom. Let's go back to the traditional "St. John's" on our jersey and SJU intials. STJ is not grammatically correct and our uniform look silly with the combination of the T and J together.
4. Where is Flagboy?! Yes it was silly, but it was our silly tradition!
St. John's has a great tradition, but it seems over the last 20 or so years we keep trying to reinvent ourselves and we keep falling flat on our face. Obviously what makes good programs are good recruits, but I will argue that tradition DOES matter and tradition helps build team pride. My examples are the local area teams. The Yankees flaunt their history and love talking about what they mean to baseball. The Jets and Giants and now recently the Rangers all went back to their traditional uniforms.
As always thoughts are welcomed!
