Well congrats to St. John's as they beat a good Northwestern team, 85-69.

Thoughts...

- 1st half I was worried when St. John's went down 23-13 early, didn't know if they could bounce back, but the did.

- The block Brownlee had shouldn't have been a foul, that was amazing!

- There were so many bad passes but St. John's in the 1st half, lob passes, and dangerous passes.

- 2nd half was literally like night and day. 70% from the free throw line (hallelujah) 80% from the field (eeeeeeeek are you kidding) and only missing 4 shots...holy cow!

- 2nd half was great basketball. Shurna was amazing, but he was one of the only ones to really kill the Red Storm.

- Brownlee with a career high 21 points, Hardy, and Burrell were amazing today. DJ played well also.

Things to note - Didn't see Stith again, 2nd game in a row. Evans played what 3 minutes? He is certainly in the dog house since the Fordham game.

AND MOST OF ALL - Northwestern fans have some nerve. St. John's up 11 with 30 seconds left and there was a group of NW fans heckling me...are you serious...I let em hear it...I couldn't believe they were trying to talk junk, mind you this was AS they were walking out.

Anyway....great win, they needed these 2 after those bad losses. Hopefully they take this into the Big East games and rattle off a few W's.

Burrell played with an intensity I've never seen before.

Northwestern, for a bunch of nerds, are also a bunch of punks, too. Longggggggggggg flight back to Chicago.

I hope their flight is delayed 2 hours so they have time to reflect on that beat down they were just handed.

Brownlee played great d on shaggy guy, and Hardy finally got his 3 point shot going.

was at both games, for a guy who has been hard of burrell's the last two year, i thought these were the best two games ive seen him play in a long time. made a big difference

i also really like the lineup of Hardy, Kennedy, Polee, Browlee, and Burrell. i feel like we dont need the malik's on the floor to be successful

polee played great and so did burrell. if we get consistency from hardy brownlee and dj we will fair well in the bigeast i think.

I was more impressed with Burrell's game last night. Northwestern simply didn't have any big men, and while they're a crisp team, I think they're going to get manhandled by anyone with an inside presence this year. Hard to see them making it to the big dance but we'll see.

Is it fair to say that this was a more complete, fundamentally sound performance than any game in the Norm Roberts era? I think so. This team won't be around next year, and they may have already shot themselves in the foot with the two bad losses, but it was encouraging to see regardless.

Also, it feels like Polee is starting to play within himself a little more. He is going to be an absolute beast once he adds on a little more strength.

Was at the game last night - this was the most fun I have had watching a st johns game in a LONG time.

Burrell was a beast - went up aggressively, and the confidence building inside him was tangible from each basket he made in second half.  Hardy showed us why lavin heralded him as a great shooter, and also played very gritty d.  Brownlee was a beast on both ends - really shut down shurna in second half.  I'm sorry pinstripez, but brownlee def drilled that guy with his body.  You need to watch a replay.  It was def not intentional, but it was certainly a regular foul.

The team passes the ball around so so well, but sometimes need to be a little agressive penetrating - especially DJ.  Hopefully that will come.

Polee really played within himself except for one dumb shot on the baseline towards the end of the game.

Kudos as well to the staff for ditching the zone early.  I wonder if this team is not better off playing man regardless of opponent, but def v northwestern.

Great game and gives us some hope going forward in this season!

Brownlee was the MVP. He was royally screwed twice being called for intentional fouls on Cohen & Cobb.

The refs, garbage that they are, only called intentional fouls because the players were hurt.

There's only lesson to be learned here: Keep it up.

That 2nd half was amazing. Liked how we passed the ball but most importantly we passed down low. Did not just start chucking up 3 pointers. The JB's were fantastic. Good overall game plan on both sides of the ball in the 2nd half.

Congratulations.

22 assists. And I like the fact that all the players (with the exception of Polee) had, at least, 1 assist.

typical Tim Higgins game with call on Brownlee.  he clearly had ALL ball and bodies came together; it was not a tackle or foul where player did not attempt to go for ball.

Congratulations to switch to man defense.  i see us always opening with zone but at least we did not wait long when it proved inadequate against the outside shooters.

besides Polee's improved scoring tonight, I thought he looked more comfortable in the man defense for the first time.  At St Mary's he looked lost as all they play in HS is a zone.  The improvements he showed are hopefully due to coaching in practice which is a positive for him.

... i see us always opening with zone....

I'd be stunned if we kept doing it. It has consistently put us in a hole that we've had to climb out of.

I'd open with man to man and use the zone intermittently to give them something to think about. Then I'd switch back to man to man which we do well at.

I was surprised at the Coaches' Reception to hear Lavin say that this team is not suited for man to man defense and he was working on the zone. Thus far they've being proving that the opposite is true.

Back to the theme of the thread:

Last night made the West Virginia game something to really get excited about instead of dreading.

Thanks coaches. Thanks Johnnies.

Didn't you watch the BE tournament Ucan't demolition last season?

Not that I want to give Higgins any credit but the intentional foul call on JB2 last night was justinfied.  Went right through the body too aggresively from behind.  The airborne intentional against Cohen was crap.

Maybe the intentional foul was earned, and maybe it wasn't.

Either way, we've learned something. Fouling hard is a great idea.

Very telling, standup comments by Hollwood in the post game.

Admitted that coaching mistakes were made in the Fordham game that contributed to the loss.  Attributed it to the staff still learning about the roster and team dynamics in the short time they've had with the team.  Claims to have learned valuable lessons from the 2 A10 losses.

TGAPL is so well spoken and a darn good interview, isn't he?

That's nice that you can get a lot of enjoyment out of beating an old fallen mediocre rival in a meaningless BE tourney game with a lame duck coach, with the hopes for the NCAA already totally done except for the crazy guy sitting on your shoulder telling you they can win the BE tourney, but I prefer a crisp, great team game when the season is still in flux.

Guess we just have different opinions of what constitutes a fun game.

That Uconn win was meaningless.
I got zero enjoyment out of it.

And after all they've taken from us,
That's sad. It was never more clear that Norm couldn't be retained.

 I hear what your saying.....but

Beating Uconn is never meaningless. At least in my mind, just like georgetown and syracuse.

I was happy about the UConn win at the time but lost all enjoyment when they went out and lost a very winnable game against Marquette.

I know this sounds very sad and defeatist, but it's hard for me to get worked up over beating a downtrodden UConn squad once when their fans likely have no recollection of that game. They're undefeated and top five once again and we're in the same place we were last year, for the most part.

Isn't it though?  It's great being me.

Seriously, you guys are one set of jaded mo fo's.  If you can't enjoy destroying Ucan't in the BE tournament in front of the most annonying fans on the face of g*ds planet.  It's time to check your pulse.  You just might be embalmed, or even worse, closet Puke fans.

I hate the team so bad I don't even use nutmeg.
