How any kid would choose Seton Hall over STJ is beyond me. Star on Broadway, or take your talents to Newark? If he wants to be the face of the program, it won't shine very brightly in the swamps of New Jersey.

Curious to your thoughts on this...   how do you think Kyle Andserson would be looking if he went to SHU instead of UCLA - I think he would have been better sereved for his future at Seton Hall. He would have been the man on the team from Day, played on the fringe of  the media capital of the world and would have put up much bigger numbers. He might have put up numbers that would have had him in last years draft.

At UCLA he had a solid season on a decent team but was far from the star and that is not going to change this year. He now facing being part of the 2014 NBA Draft that some people are saying could be one of the best ever in terms of potential talent.

I am not saying SHU over SJU is the better choice in most cases but for some kids, its the right fit.

Being told its done deal for SJU...

Heard otherwise as the interest in being the face of he program (Seton Hall) is real for Whitehead.   As others have said this is a 2 horse race and if Lavin does what he does best today then your statement will be 100% true by tonight.   Let's hope it is :)

Really depends on what he is looking for though.  If he wants to battle for a starting job and earn his minutes, he goes to St. John's.  If he wants to be given a starting job from the get go, he goes to Seton Hall.

Also boils down to which coach he is more comfortable with.

Most important thing for any athlete is you have to trust that your coach is looking out for you.  If Lavin is that guy for Whitehead, then that's the best move for him.

An alternative theory:  Or Anderson could have been on a really lousy team; defenses would have focused on him

Or an alternative history:  Anderson goes to SH; is on a really lousy team; defenses focus almost exclusively on him, revealing his deficient athletic ability.  His efficiency stats  plummet and his draft status is a disappointment....

I don't mean the above in a nasty retort, just as an alternative - i'm just saying that sometimes being surrounded by lesser talent can expose your deficiencies, or perhaps hide what you are really good at.   On the other hand, you would think that NBA scouts are pretty good at reading through that; but who knows.   Harkless of course, would be your side of the argument, where he benefited from being the man.

In conclusion, I guess we could say that it is hard to say whether a player is better off being surrounded by superior talent or lesser talent. I would think you want to go against superior talent during practice to get better every day.

Or;

“@AdamZagoria: Lincoln coach Tiny Morton to @SNYtv : "St. John's visit is huge."”

He who doth protest?

If SJU visit is huge, Lavin just needs to seal it and IMO, things are leaning in our favor.  We know he can do that.
(sorry Mets fans) "Rivera has been called in to finish..."

Just reflects so called experts opinions, but

“@SOrangeJuice: Yesterday, 247's Crystal Ball prediction had Seton Hall & Minnesota neck-and-neck for Isaiah Whitehead. Today? SJU leads 62%, SHU 21%. #shbb”

Are you saying a SHU team that went 3-15 in the BE would have been better then a UCLA team that went 13-5 in the PAC 12 if you flipped Anderson to SHU from UCLA?  REALLY????

Keep in mind UCLA loss Hassan Adams late in the year, HUGE LOSS.  That kid is better then anyone on SHU hurt or otherwise.

We've all seen the savior concept in the NY area before. Felipe Lopez and the late Eddie Griffin knew it well. One guy doesn't make a team. I think if Anderson had picked the Hall, he wouldn't be experiencing a coaching coaching change, but he probably would have played in the NIT last year as opposed to the NCAA tournament. All things considered, this can be his year. There is room for a tall kid who can pass like he can in the league. He'll be fine. Just a freshman.

As far as having the opportunity to be the man, Anderson played at UCLA. I can't tell you how many minutes, but when I watched, he was almost always out there. I don't think we can look at his career with anything other than an incomplete. He had a lot of talent around him. Started off slow, but put up exceptional overall numbers. I think he'll be fine.

As far as Seton Hall goes,  I'm impressed with the recent improvements in recruiting, but I see more pain in their future. Losing that PG to the Illini is a big loss IMO.  Whitehead, for Seton Hall, and for STJ before Lavin, is the local star that just wouldn't come.

That changes, or we see more of the same. Whitehead is just the latest. I am enamored and frankly memorized with Lavin's recruiting ability, and with his approach to recruiting. I don't think he gets involved w Whitehead again if he's not coming.

We'll shall see.

But isn't that really an argument for why Kyle should have gone to SHU over UCLA?   Not necessarily St Johns.

And I agree with you, if KA had been at SHU last year he may have had a big year, gets BE Rookie of the Year, and who knows?  Maybe he's a lottery pick.  That's pretty much what Harkless did for us.   Seton Hall isn't always a poor choice for an elite player.

But KA could have done something similar at SJU last season.  We werent as stacked as UCLA.  He wouldn't have been the only option, like maybe he wouldve at the Hall, but he could've still been a focal point.

You know for some reason I just remembered a post from Choz and looked it up about Lav and recruiting

"Thing is this: Sit in a living room wit Steve Lavin and if you aint optimistic bout the program then you aint gonna be optimistic bout anytin.

He is the most impressive one-on-one recruiter I ever seen (and I seen Cal in two living rooms). He wows them on the couch. He remembers evrybody's name (EVRYBDY'S) and they affiliation like he Rainman or sometin. He knows more when he walk in that door than any coach. Knows the kid, his fams, his in-laws, his HS coach, his AAU coach, his assistant AAU coach, his dog, his iguana.

Lav aint gonna get evry kid (see Kyle). But he is the best closer I ever seen and I seen plenty.  "

Look at IW's options if it is between SJU and SH, play for a coach who has gotten numerous players to the NBA, the staff with NBA connections at every level, other connections (Mullin back in front office position working for a SJU guy, Mark Jackson head coach of NBA, Moe (NYC kid in league after one year) Artest back in NY, playing at the garden, Lavs has gotten kids from all over map to come play in NYC., new UA deal and close to home for mom (could be good or bad i guess). Or play at SH, i know they are making inroads with some recent recruiting. The other hand he may feel like Sheed, stay close to home but not in backyard (SJU over Temple)

Do Tiny and Lavin get along? I think I remember that when Lavin was hired, he wanted to be a part of the staff.
