This debate pops up every so often. Who from NY you want on the team this year? I don't want city kids for shits and giggles. Give me the best NYC player every year. Harkless, Lawrence, etc....
But then you have to realize a kid might not want to go to school in NY and might want to get away.
Omar Calhoun and Kamari Murphy.
And I can´t believe that there are no NYC players with the roles of Bourgault or Hooper Or Jones.
Omar Calhoun never wanted to come here. He saw Harrison Greene and even Nuri last year and popped and signed before our defections.
NYC could have def helped more than Greene, Dom at this point. Melvin Johnson would have been nice right about now.
Yeah - he's killing it at VCU this year - http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/62611/melvin-johnson
Sarcasm? Over look the numbers and look at the depth, ability to score shoot, create his own shot and lineup situation. We wouldn't be weaving for 25 seconds with him on the court guaranteed. That's like saying Phil Greene has been phenomenal as a point guard because of his assist to turnover ratio, which is barely the case.
I don't see the improvement over Dom. Dom's numbers are better no matter how you slice them. 10 blocks to 0. 46% shooter to 42%. Assist to turnover ratio is more that twice as good. The NYC kid may be better, but not by the numbers yet.
I'm not quitting on Greene or Pointer. These kids are going to deliver down the road.
Ok and Dom is also playing 8 more minutes a game, but besides that let's stop looking at numbers and talk basketball and necessity, we have enough defense we on the other hand don't have enough offense , melvin Johnson is on a team that doesn't need him to score in order to win however in our case Dom scoring would help us out a bunch, so if you were to insert Melvin into doms slot with doms minutes his numbers IMO would be better but more importantly his impact and our cohesiveness would be a lot better. Anybody can look at numbers but not everybody can look at players and situations an make accurate analysis . Guys don't fool yourselves. Our roster doesn't gel well offensively at this point.
In addition it's quite comical that you brought up a guys shooting percentage that averages 5 points a game and comparing who blocks more shots from the guard position?!? We don't need blocks we have obekpa we need buckets and flow. Lets leave stats alone we need ballers.
I'll throw another stat at you. The Johnnies were plus six with Pointer on the court today while they beat a top 15 team in their own building.
I love Sir' Dom but he can be sooo much better. A few things I saw are that he doesn't focus on free throws. He just kinda throws them up. Saw him closing out a few times lazily on Cashmere Wright who nailed the trey in his face. Dom could have corrected both easily with more focus. He should have sprinted to an open CAshmere on the wing several times. He is fully capable of much more. Kid is playing hard enough but at only half his potential. Watched the highlights though, and Lavin loves this kid and gave him big embrace at the end of the game. sir'Dom only scratching the surface of his talent level though. Same with Amir who I think can be a much better offensive player than he is now.
When they say we are young, truth is we really are. Guys like Dom, Amir, Obekpa, Jakarr have a long way Togo. If they stay a while, they'll be monsters here.
We all know the team is young. No need for it to be mentioned so often. It is what it is, play the game.
The people paid to write about this team mention it much more than posters do. It is a relevant factor this season.
When is it not relevant? Every 8 years? Reading the St.John's Twitter feed, and seeing "young Johnnies" pisses me off, because it's year 3. We should have juniors. We have zero.
False. Lavin inherited 9 seniors his first year. This is actually year 2.
There are some situations where an incoming coach cannot be blamed. For example, in year one, Norm lost a swingman to a grades issue. That wasn't Norm's fault. Everyone wanted Rodney Epperson to stay on the team.
In Lavin's case, yes, he inherited 9 seniors, but what about the players that he encouraged to move on? You don't think there was some error in judgement there? A Ron Roberts and a Quincy Roberts could have really helped last year, and Ron Roberts would start for this team right now at the 4.
Part of the reason we are young is out of the hands of the currents staff, but let's exercise our heads and apply some objectivity. They have created a product with no experience and no leadership in year 3. Norm Roberts won 16 games in year 3 at SJ. There is a serious problem if we don't top that.
