Well I've always thought we were out of it with Whitehead, but I can't fault the staff for going hard after him.  They have been pretty steadfast with his recruitment for quite a while now.  Looks like we're not backing off.  Maybe in the end it works in our favor.  We'll see...

If he was from California we might have seen us back off, but there really is no reason to back off a top local kid. It costs nothing to have a coach at every permissible in-city game. Ride it out until the bitter end even if we aren't in his top three right now.

With NBA dreams in the minds of most of these kids out there, the track records of the various coaches  play a big part in recruiting (bigger, I feel than a lot of fans and more than a few gurus want to admit).   So it becomes important to note that those ranks have shrunk considerably in the last two years with Calhoun's retirement, and Howland out of coaching.   Between them, over the last 15 years, they'd sent 34 players to the pros between them.  There aren't many coaches who came close to that total.  Howland will no doubt be back, but he's not in the field right now.  Lavin's 15 in only 9 full years of coaching IS a huge draw.

+1
I agree.   I think coach Lavin's success getting guys to the league is reasons 1 and 2 why recruits are considering us in the first place.  I think his personality and ability to connect with kids and their families helps, no doubt, but getting guys drafted is the evidence they want to see.

The problem I see with Isaiah though, is that next year we could have D'angelo, Rhysheed, Branch, and Greene all returning.    A lot of recruits who have their eyes on being one-and-done won't want to come to a team with a crowded backcourt.
And who can blame them for that?
I know everyone has their own theory on this, but I'm convinced that's why JL is going to Cincinnati.   If Sampson wasn't returning or Sanchez eligible, I think Jermaine is in our uniform next year.   Just my 2 cents.

I agree with your theory but I dont see Rysheed or Whitehead being one and done players. Not sure if they see themselves as one and done players either. I think they see themselves as being able to play in the league and more importantly will want to play for a coach who will get them there even if that means coming off the bench his first year.

I agree with your assessment; I'm not sure if they're one and done players either.   I'd lean towards no.
But like you pointed out - that doesn't mean Isaiah doesn't think he is.   And I think you're looking at it too black and white.   Yes, coach Lavin has a great record of getting guys to the NBA, and maybe they will be willing to wait, and play for him as sophomores.
But there are other coaches out there who get guys into the league AND they might have an opening in their starting lineup.    It's not a situation where all things are equal.
The kid might love Lavin.   But if his choice is play for Lavin and ride the bench for a year(behind D'angelo and Jordan), or play for Pitino (or Boheim or Donovan etc) and start right away.... then that love for coach Lavin better be pretty freaking strong  :D

He wont be riding the bench now. If he is expecting to play in the league he should be able to take some minutes away from other players.

Yea?  Wow, that good huh.    To me shooting guards are a dime a dozen, and you really need to stand out to have a short path to the pros.

Great to hear.  Imagine a backcourt of Rysheed Jordan and Whitehead?   Absurdly good.

I'm imaging a backcourt of Jordan and Harrison. That's all I need.

Or Lavin does three guard lineup of Jordan, Whitehead, and Harrison.

If we have a lineup like that, we win the NC.  Nobody would be able to stop a 3-guard lineup like that...

Sure, because Kentucky and their 9 Mickey D All-Americans would be totally overmatched. Rysheed is our highest rated recruit in at least a decade and kentucky got 6 guys rated higher than Rysheed just this year. 6 of top 18 ranked recruits this year. Cannot ignore opposition not to mention teams like Duke, Carolina, Kansas that may have experienced talented teams. But kudos for being the most optimistic St. J's poster. You make marillac look like Debbie  Downer.  :)

Can't just go by high school rankings. D'Angelo is better than his HS ranking. Rysheed is right up there with the top guards.  Whitehead is as good as anybody.  I maintain that with a backcourt like that we'd be extremely difficult to stop.  Yes the NC was an exaggeration, but I still don't think too many teams could stop those three coupled with some good forwards.

Does look good but would look even better in St J's uni! Hey Moose, would you be willing to incorporate some blue into our uni's if it helped lure Isaiah?  ;)

I don't think we need the blue part of his uniform to lure him ;)
