Best Scoring Guard: Isaiah Whitehead, Devin Booker

As a freshman, Isaiah Whitehead was one of the most talked about names in the class of 2014. Over the years, new names and faces began to surpass Whitehead in the rankings and he entered the spring as a top 40-50 type player. After a stellar spring on the AAU and camp circuit, Whitehead is expected to see his ranking rise back up quickly. Always a guard with great strength, Whitehead has been showing off his textbook three point shot and ball handling ability over the past three months. When he gets his feet set behind the three point line you can go ahead and add three to his scoring total as these shots routinely hit nothing but net. Whitehead also handled the ball a decent amount and never got out of control during the camp which is something he was known for in his younger days. After playing well on both the UA and Nike AAU circuits, Whitehead brought his best game to the NBPA camp and left as one of the top shooting guards in the country.

Heard today that it's between Cuse and Ville which after hearing last week that we are right in the thick of it.  Bottom line is that this is going to change 600 times before it's all said and done.

Still seems this kid wants out if here, but who knows.  We have other options which is the main thing.

Rumors are always flying.  I heard recently that Rysheed was a done deal for us because he definitely wanted out of Philly but was going as far as UCLA.  Yet, we heard so many rumors about UCLA being his choice.

I havebfaith in Lavin.  You can sense when he backs off a kid.  Until then, I have every confidence that he can land his target.

Lots of possibilities.  Whitehead, Abu/Terrell etc....

Should be a fun July.

Like Jordan, Karr and some others, I think that the longer this goes, the better for us.

Thinking the same thing. If we have a successful season and build some hype in NY like we did a few years ago, its gonna make it tough for him to say no

Playing in NYC when on a top 25 team would be a pretty good pitch.  Not many teams around the country can offer a better all-around package.

Whitehead would be real nice, but (and I can't believe I'm saying this) we'll be fine even without him.  It's not like the backcourt will be hurting next year... In all likelihood a senior Dangelo, sophomore Rhysheed Jordan, and seniors Jamal Branch and Phil Greene.

Don't get me wrong, we always need pieces as talented as he is.  But we're not a point anymore where he would be a program-changing player.

That assumes Rysheed is back for a Soph year.   Don't THINK he'll be as good as Kyrie Irving or John Wall as a frosh, but he doesn't have to be:   he could be a Marquis Teague or an Eric Bledsoe - and THEY were "one and done" PGs

And given his spotty history, the staff can't recruit on the ASSUMPTION that D'Lo has his act completely together for 2 more seasons.

But we ARE talking two seasons down the road.  Could be Felix's skills start matching his athleticism by then.   Could be Hooper is the best outside shooter in the Big East - a St. Johns version of Lavin favorite Billy Knight (starting SG on his last 2 sweet 16 teams).   Who knows?

Very true CR.   Tough to predict who will be on the roster in 2 years.
But I also meant its not the end of the world from the standpoint that there are fall back options on the recruiting front if we weren't to land Whitehead.

Our recruiting strategy is no longer Lance-or-bust.

With that said; I obviously want Whitehead in the worst way, and I'm sure we're in the hunt.

That's why it is so important to have built the recruiting base, kids that will be here for 3-4 years.  Dom, Gift( 2-3 years), Phil Greene, Branch, Balamou, Hooper, Bourgault, and hopefully Harrison.  Then you can bring in your hired guns ( for lack of a better term, ha) Sampson, Obekpa, Rysheed, Mo, to be stars and filling holes.

The team was built from scratch and it was necessary to take chances on numerous kids because we need to find a solid foundation that would stick.. we are just about at that point.. Now, we need all this recruiting prowess to translate into wins and then the cycle can really begin...  Here's hoping this is the first year we see real, on court, results.

Clearly struggling with the idea of staying local.  Per Alex Kline.

Says that he speaks to Lavin weekly, has a great relationship with him and SJU is a great school.

Con is that it is home and he is not sure that he wants to stay home.

Maybe he can stay at the campus in Rome and commute?
