Just for the record if it meant getting a kid like Andrew Wiggins here I would be ok with having Pol Pot and Idi Amin hired as assistant coaches. Again that is just me.

The thing about bringing in a stud player's coach is that if the player is really that good, he's only there for a year.  Then what for the coach?

In 2 years or so, if Willard is still there, he's going to look down his bench at his assistants and realize he has a bunch of hacks next to him.

Believe Pol & Idi "permanently retired", although both rumored to be moving to Waco.

Well to play Devils advocate. If you look at our offense I could argue that Morton or a dead dictator or two might not be that drastic of a drop off.

Well, we have Whitesell now. And Rysheed Jordan running the point. Nothing Morton could do for us besides giving us a player we dont really need.

From what I have heard anyone could use Whitehead. Never seen him play but I do not think it is going out on a limb to say that he would be better than Greene, Hooper and Branch.  I would accept we did not need the Morton headache, but not that we could not use the player. That is just sour grapes.

Of course, we could have used Whitehead. That's a no brainer. But I'm not convinced that just because he's this McDonald's kid that automatically means he'll be better than Branch. Branch has had a rough couple of years transferring, and then playing hurt last year, but he'll be a senior next year, and from what I can tell from Europe, he took this summer seriously, and apparently, he played like a veteran in Europe.

I'll give you a comparison that is certainly different situation, but it resonates for me. Remember when SU thought they had Steph in the bag, and then he popped for Georgia Tech? How did SU recover from having to go with their chubby, slow, poor shooting point guard in Lazerus Sims? The senior played like one.

I am counting on the same type of development from Branch. He has great point guard skills. Now, he needs to take control of the offense.

And as far Whitehead's success goes, I see a Felipe Lopez circus developing while the Hall falls flat on their faces this season. He arrives with serious media coverage and hype, and struggles because there is no one else on that team that needs to be guarded.

Willard will replace the assistants with other HS coaches to get more players--loyalty as long as the player is at SH; then who cares, get the next one.  3 new players this year and 3 new coaches--he won't have a coaching tree he'll have a forest.

Again just to clarify I am not criticizinfg Lavin here. I look at this the same way I do when a pro team is discussing free agent $. It is not my $. As a fan I would have liked to bring in the kid even if it meant bringing in Morton.

But let's not glaze over what would've needed to happen for that to be possible.  Lavin would've had to give an assistant coaching position to an undeserving candidate.

And he would've needed to fire either Chiles, Hines, or Whitesell to make room.  Chiles and Hines have contributed to bringing this program back to the national spotlight.  And Whitesell is responsible for teaching this year's team how to play the right way.  Sometimes it's easy for fans, myself included, to say do this and do that.  But it complicates matters when you talk about the people actually impacted by it.  I'm glad Lavin took the high road on this one.  Yes, Willard won this battle.  But he's setting a very bad precedent at Seton Hall.

I wonder what the Seton Hall school president thinks of the potential circus that Willard has set the school up for....

2009 Daily News Article on Morton.  This note is telling:

"a man who exploits kids for financial gain while stretching the rules of the PSAL."

NOT A PRECEDENT! Been done forever

my issue is not so much with SHU...they are desperate and need to do something...the issues i do see are

1 - if a coach gets fired as a result, that is sleazy
2 - Morton's transparent attempt to leverage ANY job on the back of his star
3 - IW and family allowing Morton to use the kid (unless he really didnt care)

SECTION 3

1. No getting around the sleaze but it is college basketball
2. Do not know the man but I don't think we have to go out on a limb here about Morton's character
3. Personally I think he used SJU to get Morton a job. I don't think he was coming here. Just MO

I mean in the fact that top recruits in the future will want jobs for people at Seton Hall to sign with them.

"Well you did it for those two guys..."
