Are You Experienced? [Calm Before the Storm]
« on: January 07, 2011, 11:51:08 AM »
The next leg of the race takes the Red Storm through Notre Dame, where the Fighting Irish are formidable at home. In fact, the last time they lost at home was to St. John’s, last Valentine’s Day. Like the Red Storm, they start and play mostly seniors; they are (by minutes played) one of the second-oldest teams in the country, like St. John’s.  Their players have been steeped in Mike Brey’s philosophy.

But the Red Storm have defeated the Fighting Irish in South Bend before. Does St. John’s have enough firepower to defeat the Fighting Irish in South Bend again?

One side of me says its too tough to keep up the play that St. John's has had on the road against a hot Notre Dame team. Then I think Notre Dame will have trouble playing against St. John's ball pressure and will be taken out of their game.

ND is one of the second oldest teams. Who is the oldest? Us?

I like our chances against ND.

SJ 71. ND 65.

Anyone have any idea if Carlton Scott is going to play?  He missed the Uconn game with a hamstring injury.  If he is out, that will certainly help our chances.

Nevermind...Someone in another thread linked a ND preview article that says he is out for the game.

Bilas doesn't even know that Scott is out and he says DJ has been our best player. DJ has probably been at best our third best player, he clearly hasn't been watching much of either team. As for the game I would not b shocked at all if we won but on the road against such a tough veteran team I just see this being a loss. They have some good weapons but if we can limit their outside shooting and get easy buckets in transition and inside in the half court we can win. I feel bad picking against our guys but I will say ND 68 SJU64.

What's the link?

Poison - we're the oldest in the Big East. I changed the preview to add that.

We were better last time. We have more depth and BETTER PLAYERS then ND. ND is tough home that is why the game will be close. We kill them in the Garden. SJU 67 ND 62. 4-0. I Will not pick against us until we lose. The only Big East game I would be afraid of is going to play PITT in Pittsburgh. We don't have to play that game. So I will be picking us every game including Duke. Not saying we win every game. But I like or chances.

Linked by Jumpinjohnny in the "How to beat Notre Dame" thread.  He has a partially torn hamstring.  Prob wont be seeing him when we play them at the Garden.

Exactly, TONY!  Once again, I cannot come up with a score for the game on tomorrow, but I believe our Johnnies leave South Bend with a win.

Had the status quo held, sophomore Joey Brooks would have remained on the outside looking in, the eighth man in a rotation that rarely runs past seven for the No. 14 Notre Dame men's basketball team.

But when Brooks' best buddy, senior captain Carleton Scott, suffered a slight tear to his left hamstring, everyone on the bench bumped up a seat. Freshman guard Eric Atkins slid from sixth man to starter. Sophomore power forward Jack Cooley is the first reserve summoned. Brooks, a combo guard who has spent his career wrestling with his emotions, might see consistent minutes as the seventh guy Saturday night against sizzling St. John's.

AP Preview

Notre Dame closed a three-game stretch against top 10 teams without its third-leading scorer.

While its next Big East opponent isn't ranked, it could be soon.

The 14th-ranked Irish will likely be without forward Carleton Scott on Saturday night when they host St. John's, which already has one victory over a ranked conference rival this week.

Notre Dame (13-2, 2-1) had the difficult task of opening league play against three teams in the top 10, but the Irish fared well, sandwiching victories over then-No. 9 Georgetown and No. 8 Connecticut at home with a loss at No. 4 Syracuse last Saturday.

Notre Dame improved to 10-0 at home with a 73-70 win over the Huskies on Tuesday. The victory was made all the more impressive with Scott out after he suffered a partial tear in his left hamstring last week, an injury that could keep him out the rest of the month.

It won't easy replacing Scott, who averages 11.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots.

We match up well with them.  I think man to man will be effective against them...repeat of last year STJ 69-68.

Boothe in or out? I hope he can give us 3/4 solid minutes. Hardy could use a little rest.
