Ricardo Gathers (LaPlace, La./Riverside Academy)
2012, PF, 6-7, 240 pounds
He's a physical specimen who possesses tremendous power and athletic ability .When he catches the ball on the blocks he will power it up through the body of the defender. He welcomes contact and usually finishes at a good percentage. Plus, he scores a good percentage of his points from the free throw line. On the glass, he not only goes and gets rebounds he takes them away from others with hands like vice grips. His top schools are St. Johns, Syracuse , Texas, Arizona and LSU.

First off, I know the word is to "relax" with the recruitment of Ricardo.  I understand that is based on the feedback this site has received from our posters following his recruitment very closely.

What I do not understand is Ricardo mentioning possibly naming his college in the spring.  Is he just playing with the media?

It would seem to me that a player with Ricardo's talent would commit earlier, say in the fall, so he could focus on his last year of high school ball.  And have some fun along the way!

Ricardo, MSG and St. John's await you!

Ricardo Gathers (Louisiana Select/2012) – Gathers is one of the strongest players in this field. Listed at 6’8” 235 pounds, he could easily be 15 pounds heavier than that and you’d be hard pressed to find an ounce of fat on him. This superior strength advantage makes him quite a chore to deal with down low and to Gathers’ credit he doesn’t waste time floating on the perimeter. When he collects a defensive rebound (9 in this game) Gathers immediately takes off with the ball down the floor. He showed improved handle from when I last saw him in June leading the break and really pushing the pace of the game. As such a huge young man who is always attacking Gathers spends a lot of time at the free throw line. He needs significant work on his stroke going 2-9 in this game and missing badly on some of those attempts.

If he commits and gives us that type of impact we'll win the national championship.

At these events, the kids are bombarded with the same question over and over from fans and media.  It could be more to just dodge the question without really thinking about it.

Gathers needs to put in a ton of time at the line, because he might be leaving 5-6 points per game on the floor with his physical style of play.  His stroke didn't look too bad in the latest video.

I really wish some of these kids would shoot free throws underhand. It's not like anyone would have the balls to mock him for it.

If Ricardo comes to SJU and can just get his FT's up to 70%, he'll be a weapon.  With coaching and work, he certainly can.  First, let's get a commit.

In the beginning of last year the team was bad at free throws, With Lavin and staff, they overcame this deficiancy, and was good by midyear. No reason the staff cant do the same with Gathers.

Agreed.  As I pointed out when I first saw Gathers I saw the same spin issues I saw with Evans.  Staff corrected that in less than a year and Evans was servicable down the stretch from the charity stripe.  Plus in those recent videos Gathers had very good form and I think hit 5 of 6.

The problem is that most of these muscular big men don't stretch when they lift.  It makes a big difference.  Some of these kids can barely touch their own shoulders (I'm guilty of this as well) so they have to stay in motion at the line to keep loose--almost like a batter in baseball.

Look at Jeff Adrien....the kid has muscles on his chin.  He was automatic from near the FT line during the course of the game (what a zone killer) but only shot 60% for his career from the stripe when play was paused.  He got up to a respectable 64% his senior year.  That should be the goal for Gathers' freshman year.

Per ESPN Recruiting (Dave Telep)....   There is also mention of Obekpa.

Rebounders

Ricardo Gathers (LaPlace, La./Riverside) could be mistaken for an NFL player and in one game he pulled down 21 boards. However, Obekpa, 2012 wing Anthony January (Lawndale, Calif./Home School), 2012 big Willie Wiley (Springfield, Ill./Springfield), 2012 wing Tony Armstrong (Montgomery, Ala./Carver) and 2012 PF Daddy Ugbede (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) are ones to watch. Obekpa is a freak athlete and everyone knows it -- it's just that rebounding and blocking shots are all he has to offer right now. Ugbede and Wiley are undersized, but with mass to throw around, and January and Armstrong are thin wings who just have the knack for getting rebounds. It's easy to look at the thick 6-7 kid and be unimpressed, even though he's producing, and it's easy to completely miss how much damage a wing is doing on the glass just because you don't factor his rebounding into the wing skill package.

Highlights from the Peach Jam (Louisiana Select vs. Boo Williams)....

I watched all of this game and, along with Gathers, Qualls had some highlight reel dunks.

MJ, having seen Ricardo in person, is he closer to 6'8" or 6'6"?

He's closer to 6'8," if you were to ask me.  He also seems like he weighs around 245-250 lbs....  From what I was told, it's practically all-natural.  Seems the kid not long started delving into weight-lifting.

"From Arizona, I've been talking to coach Pasternack," Gathers told PGU. "He's telling me they'd love to have me come into the program. I saw what they did with Derrick Williams so they could use me in the same way."

Pasternack, who was introduced as part of the Arizona staff this summer, has deep ties to the Louisiana area as a former University of New Orleans coach. Though Arizona had few ties to Gathers before Pasternack arrived, they now stand in good position with him.

"Arizona was always one of the top schools since the beginning for me, but they've come at me harder recently," he said. "Seton Hall, Arizona, Cal, LSU, Ohio St, and West Virginia have all contacted me recently."

"I think I'm going to take a visit (to Arizona) in August," Gathers said. "I'm going to get up to Oregon and Cal for unofficials too."

"The schools I've been talking to most are St. John's, Texas, and LSU," Gathers told PGU. "I plan on making a decision late September or early October."

"I'm looking for academics, playing style, and development in a school. The atmosphere and all that is important too," he said.

Not liking Arizona's push with Gathers.  We'll have to wait and see.  Hopefully he enjoys the 118 degree weather in Zona in August... ;)

Forget showing Richardo the 118 degrees in August. We have had that heat already in July.  Show him the pictures of the two dust storms we had recently.  They were right out of the movie, the "Mummy".

My money is still on Coach Lavin to show Richardo the way.

I agree, I still think Lavin will land him, but I'd rather he skip past Arizona and straight to a SJU commit... ;)

After having lived through (or should I say survived?) the summer of 2003 in Baton Rouge & New Orleans, I can assure you that dry-heat 118-degree temperatures in Arizona will probably feel refreshing to a Louisiana native like Gathers.
