The 2K Sports Classic is NOT a home game. St. Johns' nor any other school can leave tickets for recruits at neutral site. If any kids are there it's because they have their own.

Gathers was in fact in the Garden for our game against A&M.  He was sitting near the student section.  We had a "We Want Gathers" chant and he laughed, smiled and waved to us.

Just like Kyle Anderson waved to the Seton Hall fan who came to watch him play.  Showing the kid love only works when others are not showing them $$$$$$$$,   ;D

Except that the Seton Hall fans went to see Kyle Anderson play locally in New Jersey, whereas in this case, Ricardo Gathers (a) went to see St. John's play, not vice versa, and (b) he traveled all the way from Baton Rouge to the Garden.

That won't work, winning games against competitive opponents once in awhile and not losing those type games 98% of the time, getting the unqualified recruits qualified, having a successful season and playing in a future competitive conference will do a lot more (imo).

Hey Mr. positive, there was a reason he choose SJU in the first place. And as far as winning games against quality opponents how bout last year when we beat Pitt, Uconn, Nova and duke? And a top staff who will make sure players get to play at the next level here or overseas.

Overseas for sure..... Here, that remains to be seen. You are right poison, losing to Fordham and St. Bonnie last year didn't mean much, but for this group, beating a top 20 team would certainly count for something.  Especially if we r a bubble team come tourney time.

I know, right?  I think most of us knew the vultures would start circling.  Hopefully, his heart is still with St. John's.

Is it shocking that once he de-committed everybody was calling a top 35 recruit?  Gathers has said that SJU is the clear leader and that he was de-committing to make sure he wanted to leave home.  I don't think he did so as much to open his recruitment as he did so to re-consider leaving Louisiana and LSU because of some snakes is ear and pressure from local products.  My bet is that we still lead.

I never want to see Coach K sniffing around our recruits. Not worried about any other program.

Quinn cook should've come here though.  He's averaging about 4 minutes per game there with little impact on their gameplan.  He would have been playing here.

I was at the A&M game in the student section, he seemed very happy to be there and was very cool with the student section. After the STJ game he was leaving and I yelled "I love you Ricardo" and he started laughing and turned around and waved and said "I love you too!"

Lets just say if we land him again, it was all me. lol

I haven't seen this angle before...

http://www.news-press.com/article/20111218/CITYOFPALMS/312180036/Basketball-now-football-future-?odyssey=mod%7Cbreaking%7Cart1

For the most part, however, football players throughout Southwest Florida have trended against also playing basketball. They have done the opposite of Reserve (La.) Riverside senior forward Ricardo Gathers, who stands 6-8 and weighs 260 pounds.

Gathers chose the hardwood over the gridiron.

“I played football until my freshman year,” Gathers said. “I basically kept my faith in basketball. People kept telling me, ‘You’ll be a No. 1 prospect in football.’ But basketball is what I love. I didn’t have any love to play football.”

The vision of making millions of dollars as a potential high NFL Draft pick, however, has given Gathers a second thought about football. He dropped his verbal commitment to play basketball at St. John’s, which does not have a football program. He is still considering the Red Storm along with Baylor, LSU, USC, California, N.C. State, Duke and Florida, all schools that play football and some of which contend for the BCS title each year.

“I would put it at 99 to 1 of my playing football,” Gathers said, meaning basketball trumps football 99-1.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!
