Here is the article that Zagoria posted. Mostly about Martin but the two may be interested in playing together and its only us and LSU that is looking at both.

Who'd have thought that another top PF would help us land Gathers?  Sounds good to me.

Martin seems more like a 3 but he is still young.

St. John's decommit PF Ricardo Gathers (Laplace, La./Riverside Academy) has a long list of suitors -- LSU, St. John's, Baylor, Duke, Florida, NC State and Cal -- and a tough decision ahead. All prospects want to make the right decision, but there is no "perfect" place. And after a long conversation with him about his recruiting process, it is easy to see he is confused about his choices and I believe it may be affecting his approach, preparation and ultimately his play on the court.

Yes, he is scoring inside, displaying some monster dunks, blocknig shots and rebounding with a passion -- but he is just not himself on a consistent basis.

Initial decision usually the right one.  Gathers would be the big man, playing in the world's most famous arena, with all the world watching, with a talented group of young guns around him with a year of experience under their belts.  If not Gathers, whatever talented big man ends up at SJU will find himself at the center of media attention in the Big Apple.

I am pretty sure Rico was very comfortable with St Johns and NYC, I heard his mom liked the city and the family for the most part really likes Lavin. Then they get the big boy attention from some schools, he has different people pushing him different ways, and Lavin remains out. I am sure is Lavin continues to reassure him that he will be back that he will recommit to St Johns.

I'm familiar with what Gathers and his mother when it comes to them liking St. John's.  I was actually being a bit facetious earlier, tr.  LOL 

I'm pretty sure he has some folks tugging him in other directions.

What has taken place...1) Lavin's first recruiting class was third in the country. Included in that class are the 2 best players (if not more) to wear the St. John's uniform in a decade.  2) Second recruiting class does not become official until April 2012 at the earliest.  Put down the hater-ade!

You can spin the facts all you want, but your not fooling anyone but those who refuse to look at the currents facts the past 4 months.  We're all great spin-jobers on this board who love drinking the Kool-Aid and who often get blinded by their allegiances.

I'm just repeating the obvious.  I'm not making any of this up and that's why it hurts as much as it does.  This is what it is right now, it's the reality of the situation and pretending like it's no problem or that it is an optical illusion isn't going to change it or make it go away (having lost (7) recruits etc. in 4 months time and in turn gained NOBODY ).  Steve Lavin (who I first & foremost wish a speedy recovery and pray for) needs to get cracking ASAP again otherwise we're unfortunately going to get left in the dust.

Even with the ineligibles and Nuri transfer, Lavin still got us the best recruiting class we've had here in a long time. I hope you come back to the board and admit you were wrong when Lavin signs us 5 with a couple of top 100's for next year. But chances are you won't.

I dont think weve lost Gathers just yet. If Lavin adds 1 of either Sampson or Gathers along with Obepka and Branch. WE are on course

I think everyone was spoiled last year. Normally you aren't going to get 6-8 recruits to sign in the early November signing period. Nor has any school in the country assembled an entire team in one class which is what St. John's was forced to try to do. They did a hell of a job acquiring the talent that they did.

There is still Top 100 talent on the board, there is talent that will eventually be Top 100 by spring left on the board, and I can firmly say that St. John's is in a good situation with Gathers. Media tends to blow a lot of stuff out of proportion and make news out of things that really aren't newsworthy.

I'm not sure why you're making generalized statements of the overall opinion of the community here. I don't see what purpose it serves. You obviously have a pessimistic opinion of the current state of the program and that's your prerogative.
