2012 Out of Conference Games

Here's a thread to talk about next year's OOC games.  It looks like we almost got a game against Purdue.

"2. The Nov. 11, 2011 rededication game in Mackey probably will be against a mid-major. UCLA is out as a possible foe, and St. John’s — with Steve Lavin and Gene Keady on the bench — just didn’t want to do it. That’s understandable. Neither Lavin nor Keady would want to hand Purdue a loss in that game, and vice versa. Tennessee is out, too."

I've heard Rhode Island but I think it might be part of CVC or Holiday.

I hope Rhode Island for the Holiday Tournament - solid but not overwhelming competition. But not for CvC - this team needs one real cupcake to practice on and then an okay (150-250 RPI or KenPom) squad to cut their teeth against.

Hopefully LIU and Iona are considered, not Wagner and Marist

Why not? Wagner is a tough team! I'd love to see them again. LIU as well. And Iona. Just not Marist.

With 12 BE teams playing in the revamped SEC/Big East Invitational it's likely STJ will be in one of those games.

I misspoke, I like Wagner as well-meant Monmouth

Monmouth would be good as the first game, maybe. The "work out the kinks" game.

I'd just as sonn stay away from Iona until we get out feet on the ground.  Cluess scares me.

Losing to a LIU/IONA wouldnt be an RPI killer, as say Fordham/Monmouht

Hope we get back to establishing some local rivalries with the likes of Fordham, Manhatten and Iona. We have to stop being afraid to play the locals because we might lose. We need teams with killer instincts that will get up to play the locals as they do to play us.

Afraid?  Posters want a tough schedule but then want us to play weak locals.  Playing Fordham is fine because its an A-10 team.  St. Francis I assum will be CVC opener or something.  Not much room for much else when you already mix in Arizona, Tex AM or Miss St, SEC challenge, Duke, UCLA.
We're playing Fordham at MSG next year.

Fordham is an A-10 team? Since when? Blowing them out by 40 would still hurt the RPI

Yes A-10.  Better conference means most likely they are going to have a higher RPI.  Plus Tom Pecora is god to half the ppl who post on here or Redmen and they think he will raise them to amazing levels.

Believe under Norm we were afraid of playing some locals-when we couldn't beat Hofstra we seemed to drop them from sch. Also years ago we had the Lapchick Classic and won like 20 tourneys and 40 games in a row then as soon as we lost one game we cancelled the tourney and the talk was it was embarrassing  to lose a game in a tourney named for a former coach of ours.

UCLA at home

This UCLA game is losing a lot of luster with Honeycutt, Lee, and Smith all likely going early (bad choices IMO).  I don't know what else they return from their roster.  I also don't know what their recruiting class looks like.  Still not the likely top 15 team were were going to face.

Smith isn't coming out. So you have Smith and Reeves Nelson who beasted the Johnny forwards along w the Wear twins and Stover and Lane. Don't sleep on UCLA despite the lackluster back court.
