Holiday Festival Format Change

We will play Fordham but no longer a tournament format...

It can never be overstated how important a date in the Garden is to most Big East and local teams for recruiting purposes. To that end, Fordham and St. John's will play a rematch of last season's thrilling come-from-behind Rams' win in the Garden Holiday Festival on Dec. 17.

Rutgers will take on Stony Brook, which lost in the America East title game last season under Steve Pikiell, who continues to build the Seawolves into a quality program. (Disclaimer: This author is a Stony Brook graduate that has been amazed by the overall growth of the athletic department and university's facilities, spearheaded by athletic director Jim Fiore).

The Garden wanted to match Rutgers against Manhattan, and new coach Steve Masiello was all for it, but the Jaspers had scheduling conflicts. The former two-day tournament will now be a one-day showcase with the outstanding player taking home a new award -- the Lou Carnesecca Trophy.

Don't mind so much that its only one game.  That's life with the Garden and all the construction issues.  But I DONT like Rutgers coming in at all.  Would have rather preferred a non local playing Stony Brook.

Sounds like a permanent change...not sure I like it.  Agree about Rutgers though...they need to bring in a bigger named team if they want to get people to show up.  Not a fan of sharing our homecourt with the other locals.

Dec.17 seems early for festival. A Pal told me Fordham board called for Texas-Temple on the card with SJU-Rams.

Interesting.  I thought at first it was because there weren't many dates in July.  Because of the MSG construction both the Rangers and Knicks are opening up for awhile on the road therefore shortening their home schedules.  Maybe in a few years it will come back.

Questions: Are SJU and MSG circling each  as their interest and opportunities are diverging. Correct me if I'm wrong currently SJU pay a fixed amount per game to use (rent ) the facilities. There was a time when the MSG paid SJU  a set amount per game and the box office was MSG. With renovation of MSG they may have concluded that the current arrangement does not maximize the revenue opportunities available to them. Ideally for  MSG  a weekly college double header with 19,000 bodies in the seats. Question rent or promote and pay a fixed amount to the schools.

SJU with a new arena in Brooklyn, there maybe an alternative  to MSG and the possibility  of greater revenue from basketball.

We pay rent.  We're not going anywhere.  Might we play a few games in Bkyln?  Sure.  But we are not going anywhere.  We want MSG and they want us and our revival.

Sorry understand it is about money. The Russian if involved in the Brooklyn arena will have college basketball. Would not be surprised if he arranged for LIU to go independent and with two schools would be in position to run weekly college doubleheaders.

How come teams don't run to the Rock then?  Brand new beautiful arena.  And wait you think Prokorov will be involved in LIU becoming an independent?  Where did you come up with that?  Seems out of left field.

Does our fan base worry just for worrying sake????

The Rock, it is not about a new facilities and running to the Rock I repeat it is about making money and not a damn to do with your imagined revival.  The Russian will need more then the NBA to generate revenue for the new arena, Who else other then LIU the catholic schools do not take chances and LIU has expressed at interest in playing in new arena and in upgrading their program. Once upon a time college basketball was a draw in N. Y. and is still a big draw in many parts of the country.Could be IT out of left field but then again.........

If you think this  has anything to do with worry I'm afraid may be over your head

The Russian is not worried about making money.  He blows money on women every day of his life.  Google his Holiday party for office workers and try telling me he cares about money.

Again- LIU becoming independent?  Who is independent in college hoops exactly?  Do tell.  I'm not doubting college hoops will take place there.  LIU has signed to play there.  But picture the crowds SHU draws at the Rock with the upper deck draped off and the will look like candy compared to what LIU will draw.

STJ will not be leaving the Garden.  We were making money when we drew pitiful crowds.  Shows what rent was.  MSG will not be raising it.  They want us.  Trust me I know how pleased they were to see crowds like last year.  They get all the concessions.  Lotta beers flowing during those STJ wins.

What is your handle on Redmen.com by the way?

Making money is a way of keeping score a measure of success, the Russian will win it the NBA and not lose money Yes I'm telling you he care amout money. What  or who is an independent right now no one but that mean exactly nothing. When you have a house team being an independent has an advantage in scheduling. If your running doublereader your looking for the  elite  team having independent facilitates scheduling. Interesting you have taken to speaking for MSG. MSG wants SJU until there is an alternative which will produce greater revenue.

What a thread (Holiday Festival Format Change) moving off topic (LIU, the new Brooklyn Center, and a rich Russian billionaire)!  I am shocked!

I can remember as a kid my father bringing me to those old HF games with teams from all over the country.  That format died with NY losing some of its interest in college ball.

If you are going to hold a HF in MSG do it right.  Bring in three top schools, with the new St. John's as the fourth!  It gives these other schools some recruiting exposure.  It gives our school a high profile opportunity with recruits as well.  And finally, MSG can bring in some bread.  I guess there are just too many tournaments now days.

By the way, last year I saw "Mr. NJ-Brooklyn Russian Billionaire's" mansion outside of Monaco.  The bank was foreclosing on it.  Big spread and big mortgage!

Another tradition bites the dust. This is no longer the Holiday Festival which used to be held between Christmas and New Years and had at least 4 teams and was a tournament with a winner. Now it is just a college doubleheader. The lame excuse of a team not wanting to lose 2 games is ridiculous-than don't agree to play in the tourney or how about winning a game.

Has to do more with scheduling. It's tough to get programs to play 2 games on a neutral court near finals time. It's a financial burden and difficult to fit in with the rest of your schedule.

It's not to say it is impossible but it's becoming increasingly more difficult to schedule teams in this.

I think we have no choice; MSG or nowhere. I don't think MSG will sit still for us playing a few games in the new place in Bklyn.  Look what the Empire State Building is doing to SPIDERMAN because  the show has the Chrysler building in one scene.
At the same time, the threat of us playing in Bklyn, our original home, could provide a measure of leverage with MSG.
In the meantime, don't you think that Syracuse (self proclaimed NY's team) and UConn (de facto NY's champion this year- BE/NCAA) woulld be  licking their chops about playing an extra 2 or 3 regular season or tourney games every year in Bklyn or MSG to further muddy our waters.

He's asking you what name (handle) you use on RM.com. I think it is the same one you use here - Schermerhorn Street. Isn't it ?
