A lot of optimism here...anyone concerned about him qualifying?

Please don't take this wrong - but UCLA was sure they could get him past THEIR admissions office - so I'm not concerned in the least.

I thought Joe's point about the law of probability was that we would get a recruit qualified without a hiccup.  Not much to attack him for.

I'm going to enjoy the summer, and deal with the unexpected bad news this fall.

Not sure I remember a kid who has climbed this high this late in his high school career.   Usually your position is locked by the end of the AAU season after your Junior year.   The kind of impact Rysheed's senior year of HIGH SCHOOL has had is like a throwback to the old days of recruiting....

From Telep's "10 Toughest Calls"

4. Rysheed Jordan’s position among the elite
One of most drama-filled recruitments of the year belonged to the best prospect out of Philly, point guard Rysheed Jordan. Jordan’s rise was well-documented this season as he added the distribution skills to an already-impressive array of drives and his size at 6-foot-4. There’s an element of both potential and production with his ranking as the No. 3 point guard and No. 17 overall recruit. It was encouraging to see him have such an outstanding senior season coming off the summer of 2012, which didn’t meet his standards. The two most improved point guards this season were Jordan and fifth-year (so not eligible for the rankings) Louisville-bound Terry Rozier.

Interesting.   Rozier committed to Louisville in 2011 - when he was a 4 star recruit, and listed as anywhere from the 12th to 15th PG in the class.   Scout now has him as a 5 star, the #3 in the class.    What's intersting, is that  Pitino was able to sign JC transfer Chris Jones - two time first team JC All American, and this year's JC player of the year - a 5'10 PG.  With Russ Smith, Wayne Blackshear and Kevin Ware back at the guard spots, and Rozier AND  his 4star Hargrave backcourt mate Anton Gill joining the mix as frosh - seems like a bad choice for a kid like Jones, with only 2 years of eligibility remaining.    There are any number of top schools where he could have stepped into guaranteed minutes at the 1....

Given his size  Russ Smith's future (if any) at the next level is going to have to be at PG - you have to think, in agreeing to come back this season, some promises were made - at least backup minutes at the PG spot.

Well he's a Jr so yeah I'd give him the leg up on freshman.  Plus its not like he was a late bloomer.  He was Top 50 kid out of HS who didnt have the grades.

Out of high school, Chris was ranked as the 12 PG in che class, behind Marques Teague, Myke Kabongo, Josiah Turner, BJ Young, Jahii Carson, Quinn Cook, Shannon Scott, Jamal Branch,  Tyrone Johnson, Chasson Randle and Tyrone Adams by Scout.Com.  (and behind all but Randle and Adams in the RSCI rankings).

Terry Rozier is ranked as Scout's #3 this year, behind only Andrew Harrison and Kasey Hill.

I agree, Jones is exceptional.  From the highlights and one full game I've seen, he plays like Jahii Carson Lite.   But it's against JC competition. He could be good, or he could be great.   There's a good chance Rozier at Hargrave with their elite prep schedule,  played with better talent and against SUPERIOR opposition  than Jones did at his JC in Florida.

Well experience helps but even with experience that means he is better then Harrison among others. That is still saying a lot.

Also means he will be able to step in for Siva without missing a beat for Ville.

Again it is an aggressive goal but at some point I hope SJU is recruiting like that and helps carry the new league.

Still just jazzed that Lavin and SJU have landed what is now EPSN's #17 recruit in the entire 2013 class (and Rivals/Yahoo's #20), and how IMPORTANT that is going forward in recruiting.   When I first started posting here 3 years ago, I preached about changing the "mindset".   This was a school with 2 top 100 recruits in the previous 6 years.  One that had't had a 50 recruit in a decade.   Now our roster has a PG who was ESPN's #17 recruit (Rysheed).  An SG who was Prepstars #28 recruit (D'Lo).   An SF who was Dave Teleps #24 recruit (Sir Dom).   A PF who was Teleps #31 recruit (Jakarr).  A Center who was Van Colemans #50 Recruit (Oblockpa).

Maybe being late to the game, I'm misreading this, but it seems to me our SECOND TEAM would be higher ranked on potential than most of the talent here the decade before the coaching change:  2nd string Point Guard who was Scout.Com's #41 recruit (Jamal).  2nd string SG who was a borderline top 100 player and a 2 year starter at D! (Phil).  A 2nd string PF who was a JC All American (Sanchez).  A 2nd string Post who was a JC All American who's already put up a 10/6 season in the big East (Gift).  Two pure shooters at the SF/SF spots in Bourgalt and Hooper.  A potentially outstanding sleeper at the 2/3 in Balamou.  And an intriguing athletic enigma at PF in Christian Jones.

But with all that, the #17 ranking is huge - we've cracked the top 20 barrier.   Next year, should we try to close in on a Diamond Stone, or an Ivan Rabb, or a Thomas Bryant, or a Jessie Govan, no one's going to laugh and say "those guys are too high ranked for St. Johns"....And more important than recruiting geeks thinking that, it'll be some of those RECRUITS taking us seriously.

It's hard to compare talent from 8 years ago coached by a complete nice person to the talent now coached by Lavin & Co. I think, and hope the difference will be Jordan. We have been waiting for a top ranked point guard to want St.John's.

Now that Harrington is gone, nothing should stand in the way of the basketball program's success. Still, whether it's my place to or not, I urge all of you to be patient with this player. Lopez and Hamilton went batty under the bright lights. Let's give this kid a chance to be a freshman. Hopefully, guys like Dom, Phil, Jakarr & yes, even DLo can shoulder the burden of the pressure. That's the kind of program I want for us.

Agree Poison.  Crgreen is right though that the mindset is starting to change and we are really a far cry competitively from where we were a few years ago.  Roster has a lot of talent here, and this is only the beginning.  Lavin has a chance in this new Big East to set a tone and have a perennial NCAA team.  He can really build his name, program and SJU.  We certainly have to be patient with Rysheed.  That is why we also have Branch and Greene.  We have a strong stable in the backcourt.  Expectations for players, coaches and fans should certainly be reasonably high this season..  Rysheed will have enough leeway with the guys there, but still has a chance to shine.

I realize I'm a little overexcited over Rysheed.   But with pretty good reason.   ESPN rankings basically means Dave Telep - and I've been a big fan of Dave's and his very consistent recruiting expertise for a lot of years now.   Just to give an example, his #17 in 2007 was Anthony Randolph - his one year at LSU was 15.6 pts, 8.5 rebs, before going as the #14 overall pick.  In 2008 it was Iman Shumpert.    He was 11 pts 5 assists as a GaTech frosh.  2009 it was Daniel Orton - a first round pick after his frosh season at Kentucky.  In 2010 Dave went out on a limb - his #17 was a guy everyone else had mid-30s or worse.  But this year Adriene Payne was the interior anchor for Tom Izzo's #9 Michigan State Spartans.   In 2011, it was Dorian Finney-Smith, who was Virginia Tech's leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer AND assist man as a 6'8  frosh (he sat out this past season, transferring to Florida after Seth Greenberg was fired).  The 2012 #17 was Sam Dekker - Sam was the 6th man for a veteren Wisconsin team this year that finished #18 in the country - one of 4 players between 9.5 and 11.1 pts per game on an incredibly balanced squad.  He WILl be a major star in the Big 10.

What I'm saying is that while I agree there's plenty of leeway to grant to Rysheed, I honestly don't think much will be needed.   Folks whose opinions I trust (trust thats been EARNED over many years) tell me this kid is the "real deal".  I expect him to have a major impact from the first practice forward.

I've seen us pre season #37, and #40. 4 years ago, we were in the exact same place. The difference is that we are winning recruiting battles that Norm would lose every time, because everyone knew that there was a great chance you'd regress with him as your coach.

What should happen now is our upperclassmen need to carry this program, take us into the top 25, and prepare our younger guys for the following seasons.
