The Numbers Game in Recruiting
« on: July 19, 2011, 06:04:34 PM »
While our incoming recruiting class (2011) has yet to play a game, we are deep into looking at the 2012 recruiting class and beyond.  It looks like we are trying to bring in three players  for the 2012-2013 class.  Does that give us 13 scholarships in 2012, with Nuri being a junior and GG and MS being seniors?  Is that correct?

So a year from now, if every body qualifies and stays at St. John's, we  will be looking for two players to fill the 2013-2014 scholarship limit of 13 with GG and MS leaving in May 2013.

All of this is based on a perfect world, which we know is not always the case, as players leave unexpectedly (see Polee).

I think everyone expects there to be at least one extra scholarship available.  We have nine recruits of which six are ranked in the top 100 and two are ranked as top JUCO's.  Phil Greene is not ranked, but is a very impressive looking player.

If we pick up the trio of Anderson-Gathers-Thomas, things look very good.  Figure in McCullough in 2014, and we are in great shape.  2013 is probably a very important year to plug in whatever hole(s) we have to make a champinoship run.  I believe Lavin will only be dealing with top 20 talent in 2013.  I wouldn't be shocked for us to "rent" a one-and-done lottery pick or two.
