Are we allowed to hold team practices?
« on: July 21, 2011, 11:54:51 AM »
It sounded from some of the threads that we are not allowed to have team practices with coaches yet, but according to Pitinos blog from today, they've had 3 days of practices.

Does anyone know if we have held any practices with the coaches as of yet?

I think you're allowed 10 days of practice if you are going on a out of country trip which it looks like they are but you are only allowed to do these trips once every few years.  We went to Canada two years ago so I'm not sure when we would be allowed to have another one.

we get one trip every four years. Essentially every class that comes in gets one trip

Big change in international trip rules starting this year is that freshman are allowed to participate.

Pitino sure doesn't coddle his players. Surprisingly frank.

Omari Lawrence and Malik Stith (freshmen of the 2009-10 team) played in Canada two seasons ago.

You are correct but as I recall that trip actually occurred  in September after classes started.   As I also recall Omari and Malik couldn't practice with the team until classes started and missed something like 8 of the 10 pre trip practices.  Now Louisville can have 10 practices in July for an early August trip with their freshmen who are on campus for summer classes participating.  Most of these trips do occur before classes start because most of the coaches have their student athlete's academic best interests as a top priority.  That was a joke.  Anyway, that's the way I recall it and the way I think I've read about the rule changes.  Then again this might be all in my head.

They are going to the Bahamas, so they get the extra practice period.  HUUUUUGE advantage.  If there was ever a year to do an early international tour for St. John's it would have been this year.

Intersting that Louisville is also waiting on some freshmen--Blackshear and Ware-- to finish up academically.  Perhaps this is more widespread than many of us realized--we've been out of the top talent market for a while!
