We need a point guard and a center. Obepka does nothing for us if we land Gathers. He's a less-skilled Sampson.
Every team needs one true point guard to go as deep as most of us are thinking.
Kyle Anderson offensively can play the role of a "pure PG". He absolutely has the vision and passing ability. What people worry about is him defending PG's which I don't think is as much of a problem as people think. On defense we play lots of zones and when Kyle is playing, we can easily drop into several zones like box/1, triangle/2 where Kyle isn't required to cover some of the speedier PG's.
I also think there is a lot of gray area these days in what is q "pure PG". Was Kemba or Napier a "pure PG" last year? Is Peyton Siva?, Scoop Jardine? I don't think we'll have any problems heading into 2012 with potentially Anderson, Lindsey, Harrison and Greene, any of which can probably handle PG duties better than most we've had the past 10 or 15 years.
Was Kemba a pure point gaurd? Of course. To me, a pure point guard is a kid that with a tight handle that can control the pace of the game and make good decisions with the ball. Just because a kid can score or HAS to score like Kemba doesn't in any way detract from being a pure point IMO. Kemba and Napier were pure points to me.
Box and one or a triangle and two are terrible options that only work in the narrowiest of circumstances. I think KA will be better off with a pure point on the floor.
The best teams I've seen at any level have that one kid you know you can hand the ball to and know it's safe. I'm not sure that kid is Kyle Anderson for 30 mpg without the help of a Jevon-type pg.
To be fair, I am very anti big point guard. I've never been interested in the Calathes or Shaun Livingstons of the world. Give me a 6'1 Kemba Walker any day of the week.
Kyle has a fantastic handle, and the vision and passing ability at a level of just about any pure PG's coming in. I was skeptical for a long time, but the more I have seen of him, the more I am convinced that he causes a TON more mismatches than he gives up to other teams. I just threw a zone or two out there, but his length would work just as well in a 2-3, 3-2 or dropping to the middle of a 1-3-1.
Remember, we do have other quality guards out there. I don't think Kyle is a 30+ mpg PG. I think he's a lethal weapon when used at multiple spots because teams will have fits adjusting to even just keeping him checked, whether at guard, forward or center. The kid not only can pass but can score and shoot. How many PG's can prevent a shot from the top of the key by KA or an entry pass by him? How will they guard against a guy like Kyle in the 2-3? We could iso Kyle and clear out like we did with hardy, and how is any defense going to avoid doubling a guy like Kyle who's backing down some unsuspecting 6-ft PG. Kyles a guy that will find the open man on doubles for sure. He's an enigma, and while maybe not a full-time PG, is certainly a kid you can call a PG and mean it.
Marillac, there are a ton of speedy sub-6 ft PG's out there, but very few Kyle Anderson's. I'm ok passing on Jevon and going hard after Jordan in 2013.
