I guess it's about preference. I would take Livingston and Calathes over Walker.
Here is the issue with this 'extra' ship now. Unless someone leaves early (which can and I think will happen). We are trying to convince someone to come on board as the 13th and final scholarship player. I know Marillac has dreams of 2012 and hoisting a trophy. While I think we can be very damn good in 2012 with mostly soph's (ala FLA) I think '13 is the year. I would honestly save the ship for 'now'. Wait till the spring. Nuri might be dropping 18 a game and leaving early or Pelle might be dominating who knows. At that point we will have a carrot to dangle to any kid who backed out or is waiting around for better offer.

The article says, "...`Jevon still very much wants to be a Johnny, but he wants to make sure he's making the right decision for him and his family,' said Simms...."Is it certain that Jevon's out as far as we are concerned?

I think Lavin has an idea who his 11-13th players might be. I also get the feeling that he probably already knows whether Lindsey has ideas of leaving after one year, whether it be Europe or wherever. Even Lavin and truthfully every coach bringing in big guns like Lavin is, knows that not all will get as much PT. I don't think we should approach it that way though. I think that Lavin has a knack for being able to sell this program the way he has been. Why stop now, if he can potentially land a kid like Reinhardt? Go for the gold now. no harm in it. It is what the best programs do. After this season Stith and GG will be seniors and Nuri mit be as well for all we know. No reason to hold back.
Can you predict what bracket/where we will be playing in the 13 tournament so I can book my airline ticket now before prices go up again
Quote from: Redstormy80 on July 25, 2011, 12:30:52 AMI would say Mitch Mcgary and I believe we would have a great shot at him but their seems to be no interest. If we land both Anderson and Gathers with Jevon going somewhere else I would like to be patient with it and choose wisely. If their is no perfect fit and no specific needs save it for the future.Once again, Lavin doesn't seem to be in the business of saving scholarships. I don't see it happening, Lavin fills his roster and should spots open up, he deals with it accordingly. I'll bet we give out that 3rd ship this season.

I think we hoist a trophy in 2013. I predict Sweet 16 in 2012 and .500 in 2011. Of course, this without ever seeing them play a single minute together! LOL I reserve the right to modify my predictions, of course.

Obepka does nothing for us if we land Gathers. He's a less-skilled Sampson. Every team needs one true point guard to go as deep as most of us are thinking. Kyle Anderson offensively can play the role of a "pure PG". He absolutely has the vision and passing ability. What people worry about is him defending PG's which I don't think is as much of a problem as people think. On defense we play lots of zones and when Kyle is playing, we can easily drop into several zones like box/1, triangle/2 where Kyle isn't required to cover some of the speedier PG's. I also think there is a lot of gray area these days in what is q "pure PG". Was Kemba or Napier a "pure PG" last year? Is Peyton Siva?, Scoop Jardine? I don't think we'll have any problems heading into 2012 with potentially Anderson, Lindsey, Harrison and Greene, any of which can probably handle PG duties better than most we've had the past 10 or 15 years. Was Kemba a pure point gaurd? Of course. To me, a pure point guard is a kid that with a tight handle that can control the pace of the game and make good decisions with the ball. Just because a kid can score or HAS to score like Kemba doesn't in any way detract from being a pure point IMO. Kemba and Napier were pure points to me. Box and one or a triangle and two are terrible options that only work in the narrowiest of circumstances. I think KA will be better off with a pure point on the floor. The best teams I've seen at any level have that one kid you know you can hand the ball to and know it's safe. I'm not sure that kid is Kyle Anderson for 30 mpg without the help of a Jevon-type pg. To be fair, I am very anti big point guard. I've never been interested in the Calathes or Shaun Livingstons of the world. Give me a 6'1 Kemba Walker any day of the week. Kyle has a fantastic handle, and the vision and passing ability at a level of just about any pure PG's coming in. I was skeptical for a long time, but the more I have seen of him, the more I am convinced that he causes a TON more mismatches than he gives up to other teams. I just threw a zone or two out there, but his length would work just as well in a 2-3, 3-2 or dropping to the middle of a 1-3-1. Remember, we do have other quality guards out there. I don't think Kyle is a 30+ mpg PG. I think he's a lethal weapon when used at multiple spots because teams will have fits adjusting to even just keeping him checked, whether at guard, forward or center. The kid not only can pass but can score and shoot. How many PG's can prevent a shot from the top of the key by KA or an entry pass by him? How will they guard against a guy like Kyle in the 2-3? We could iso Kyle and clear out like we did with hardy, and how is any defense going to avoid doubling a guy like Kyle who's backing down some unsuspecting 6-ft PG. Kyles a guy that will find the open man on doubles for sure. He's an enigma, and while maybe not a full-time PG, is certainly a kid you can call a PG and mean it. Marillac, there are a ton of speedy sub-6 ft PG's out there, but very few Kyle Anderson's. I'm ok passing on Jevon and going hard after Jordan in 2013. I'm absolutely not fine with that. I don't want to wait until 2013 to get what might be the last missing piece to a championship team. Since 1990 two teams have won a national championship without a clear pure point guard--Syracuse with McNamara and Duke with Scheyer. I'd argue that McNamara was a pure point, because he had a great handle and feel for the game...Scheyer had a ridiculous Bball IQ and really took care of the basketball. I'd rather not roll the dice to try and become the third team since 1990 (or first depending on your definition of a pure point). We will be a better team if we can somehow land a pure point to complement Kyle.
