I am considering decomitting as a fan of St J's and opening up my recruitment. St J's remains at the top of my list but am also condidering NYU, Columbia, and Yeshiva. Academics played no part in my decision as I project to be eligible to attend and watch games for the next 4 years and have already passed muster with the NCAA and Publishers Clearinghouses. 8)

There have been question marks with Wood's academics since NIA news came out this fall. Wood was ahead of the curve moving to Bridgeton which has an excellent academic program.

The rumblings of Wood de-committing arose a little after Gathers de-committed (coincidental timing). It was questionable he was going to qualify and if that was the case than St. John's wasn't going to be able to take him. It would be a disservice to Wood's recruitment if he was attached to a school. In the past 24 hours I've been told that Wood has little to no chance to be eligible for 2012.

In the public eye it looks like "another recruit deflects from St. John's" when that's not really the entire story. If he winds up being eligible than the door would be open at St. John's and Wood would want to come here. Its just an unfortunate situation for both parties. Darrick is a great kid and I'd personally love to add him to Red Storm family.

Exactly right.

Regardless of the reason, it's not comforting knowing the team has no players coming in.

There are two signing periods for a reason.  We have nobody now.  What matters is who's on board in the spring.  Lavin will bring talent here.  Not comforting now, but I'm not worried about it just yet.

Its not comforting to lose players ever but if what would look worse. Losing a player to de-commitment or having another player sign a LOI and then not be cleared.

So I posted 2 or 3 times in this 18 page thread and said in Sept that he had academic question marks but my opinion is coming out of "the Seton Hall camp", comical.

Dave - you shouldn't care this kid is gone, you never thought he was a Big East talent anyway.

The recruiting atmosphere at SJU remains great, even with Lavin's absence from the bench (in fact, with Lavin investing more time in recruiting while he recovers, it might be a recruiting advantage).  This is especially the case for the very best recruits, who can see that we have young, hungry, and talented players who are showcasing their skills in the nation's highest profile sporting venue ... and they also see gaps where they'll immediately fit into and land lots of playing time.  SJU will be attractive to a potential big man as well as a true PG.  I suspect Lavin is digging deep in his recruiting, looking not only at the nation's top prep players but potential recruits abroad.  A player like Wood may have been scared off a bit by Lavin's promise to bring in 5 recruits next year.  If Wood wavered in his committment, perhaps looking for reassurance, it is not unlikely that Lavin told him to feel free to decommit as voluntarily as he initially committed.  Wood doesn't fit into the category of a Kyle Anderson or Shabazz Muhammad, that is a program changing player.  Laterally, the negative news surrounding 3 of our top recruits being academically ineligible this year probably factored into this as well, as others have pointed out.  I can imagine Father Harrington very gently communicating to Lavin that we need to be a little more careful in recruiting students who are not up to snuff academically to avoid negative press in the future.  I know Harrington is a big supporter of Lavin.

In the end, I think Lavin is very carefully crafting his incoming recruiting class.  He has a talented core to build around with some missing pieces.  I think we have a lot to look forward to.

Things are not always the way they appear, and things appear bad[recruiting wise} . I feel when all is said and done Lavin will get the job done.

Watching this board panic is almost as fun as watching the Republican candidates implode.  Relax, guys.

He did not have a heart transplant! He had a routine prostate cancer surgery that is taking longer than expected to heal. He was too active on the bench during the Arizona and A&M games and at one point jumped in the air! I think had he coached those games the way his idol John Wooden coached he would be coaching today. He needed to stay physically calm and sit on the bench but he is a type A personality and it set him back. Coming back in February is very likely in his case, if he relaxes a bit on the bench.

BB, I agree with your comments, except it was not routine prostate surgery.  Being away from the bench can only help Coach recover faster.

Interesting article in Sports Illustrated this week discussing all of the notable transfers UCLA has had.  Carlino from BYU, Moser and Stanback from UNLV and Gordon from New Mexico St. would make 4/5 of a nice starting team.  I've seen some other articles about teams losing guys (or guys becoming ineligible), but put it in even more perspective given that UCLA is one of the most stored programs in basketball and has a terrific, coach with a track record.

Gordon's from the USA so he plays for New Mexico, not NM State.  ; )

Boo this isn't really directed right at you but more to everyone.

It's comments like this that spur negative reactions from posters. It's a downward spiral.

This whole "troll" "baiter" "flamer" nonsense never existed here till recently. It's his opinion he stated. He's allowed to have it as much as you are to disagree with it.

Please refrain from calling posters names. It's not something I want here.

If you disagree either:

A: Don't respond

B: Counter with your opinion supported by facts/theory
