I can't help but wonder if other coaches are in these kids' ears about Lavin's health.

Those "in the know" believe so

This is disappointing because so much is happening at once, but a far more dire need than another combo guard, is a true, pass first point guard, and a dead eye shooter.

What does a "clearinghouse issue" mean exactly?   There were rumors about paper work not being in order in November and that was why he couldn't sign a LOI then.   But if I remember correctly Dave said something like it wasn't academics, but other issues.   Furthermore I think he said because of these paperwork issues it was in both SJU and Darrick's best interest to wait and sign in the spring.   None of that made any sense to me then, and it surely doesn't now.

1) If it's not academics what other hurdles does the NCAA clearinghouse require? and

2) How does he de-committing help in regards to these "issues"?

Think about where Wood went to school last year.

So does that mean he has to repeat every class he took at NIA?

Damn the hits just keep coming.  We need some good news around here. I don't know what is worse all this bad news or having to read Baldi's posts

Although the news sounds bad for us, I suspect Lavin is building up a strong hand to throw down when the time comes.

Although I would love to have him on our team, it sounds like we would all be complaining about how the staff had another ineligible kid come next year. He is a good player, but he is a clone of the good players that we already have and it doesn't sound like he would be here even if he didn't de commit.

I am convinced that the key issue here with Gathers and Wood is the Coach's health.  The same goes with any potential new recruits.  It is almost impossible to recruit, or keep, any one when no one, including Coach, knows when he will be back.  You do not need other coaches talking to our potential recruits, the recruits  can see for themselves that Coach is not on the bench so far this season.

Things, recruiting-wise, probably will not get better until after this season when Coach Lavin is back at full strength.

Again coaches health is not the Wood issue at all.  He never alluded to it and its all squarely academics.

There have been question marks with Wood's academics since NIA news came out this fall. Wood was ahead of the curve moving to Bridgeton which has an excellent academic program.

The rumblings of Wood de-committing arose a little after Gathers de-committed (coincidental timing). It was questionable he was going to qualify and if that was the case than St. John's wasn't going to be able to take him. It would be a disservice to Wood's recruitment if he was attached to a school. In the past 24 hours I've been told that Wood has little to no chance to be eligible for 2012.

In the public eye it looks like "another recruit deflects from St. John's" when that's not really the entire story. If he winds up being eligible than the door would be open at St. John's and Wood would want to come here. Its just an unfortunate situation for both parties. Darrick is a great kid and I'd personally love to add him to Red Storm family.

Anyone with valid info on this kid knew full well he would never qualify for next year. He was a major academic question mark from day one. He got offered to appease another player, period.

I am not sure why people cannot connect the dots when it comes to Lavin, this season and future recruits.
Most will agree that with 5 freshmen and a JC this season was going to be a challenge and most likely a losing season after the ineligible players and Nurideen Lindsey leaving.
Coaches surgery did not go as smooth as expected and he had complications and returned too early. The good news is with time the wounds and side effects will be minimal and as we know, there are half a dozen coaches who had similar surgery and are all back to coaching.
Lavin is talking to recruits, reassuring them personally. He is at their games. He is going to be coaching the 2012 players, and not Dunlap.
As we have seen with Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Kansas, UCLA, etc. players transferring or becoming ineligible is pretty common this year.
Anyone that thinks the coaches cannot add 3 or 4 players that will be serviceable next year to go with the 7 returning players are just being overly negative. With 10 or more scholarship players next year this team will be highly competitive. Period. As for this years' depth issue, yes we are lean but how many minutes have walk-ons had to play so far? Close to zero. That should tell you how talented these freshmen are!

really PMG??? KA ??? Dam well in that case let's scrap this broad scale plan, unless a kid has mutual interest & build this program with Tri state & PA kids like Norm did. We saw what Lavin did with those players. I am homer would prefer our region leading the way in an effort to cut down the Nets.  Let's replace Woods with Leroy Fludd from Boys & Girls High.Well that is if Fludd qualifies because B&H does a terrible job at that
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

When Lavin came in, his recruiting far exceeded our expectations.  I am fully confident, based on his track record at UCLA ("You are what your record says you are"), that he will continue to recruit at the highest level.

We will soon be expecting not just NCAA appearances, but to be in the hunt for national championships.

Maybe it was supposed to be "involved" that got spell checked into "invalid", perhaps?

Regardless of the reason, it's not comforting knowing the team has no players coming in.
