Pelle, Sampson, Garrett Ruled Ineligible for Fall

I removed the previous topic because some people were not behaving to the standards that should be held here.

The fact is these guys are not eligible to attend school this fall. They still have the chance to attend in the Spring. This is obviously very damaging to the program right now but it is what it is. Let's focus on potential solutions not trashing St. John's or the players. This is obviously an outcome no one wanted especially at this point in time.

I would be very surprised if any of these guys ever suited up for the team.  I wish them well, but let's face it, it's way too much of a positive spin on things to think these guys won't play basketball for an entire year.  Derwin Kitchen but with three top 100 players.  Awful day all around.

If you didn't realize that this was a distinct possibility with Jakarr and Norvel, you obviously did not get the whole story when these kids first committed. There were posters on Rivals that I know for a fact said there is no way Jakarr or Norvel would be able to get eligible. I'm suprised about Amir, I would've figured Findley would make sure he was eligible for sure. Maybe its cause he didn't go to Texas

I would figure if Lavin signed these guys, there'd at least be a chance. 

Is there any chance any of these guys could suit up in the spring or is it impossible for them to become eligible?

St. John’s basketball recruits Norvel Pelle, JaKarr Sampson and Amir Garrett are not academically eligible to enroll at the university, the NCAA has ruled, a severe blow to what was one of the nation’s best recruiting classes.

St. John’s said it will pursue all avenues to get the three eligible for the spring semester, but this is a black eye for the university. It raises legitimate questions about the quality of student St. John’s coach Steve Lavin is recruiting.

“We will continue to work with the NCAA in an effort to review Amir, Norvel and JaKarr’s cases regarding their eligibility,’’ Lavin said in a statement released by the university. “Our student-athletes and their families have been patient and cooperative throughout this review process. We are hopeful that Amir, Norvel and JaKarr will be able to join us on the court this winter, and in the classroom when the 2012 spring semester begins.”


According to The Associated Press, if ruled eligible, they would be able to participate in practice Dec. 19.
Lavin did not immediately respond to a text message. St. John’s spokesman Dominic Scianna said university president Father Donald Harrington would not comment beyond the statement.

Calls to the NCAA were not returned.

Garrett and Sampson are wings and their losses probably won’t be as damaging as Pelle's, who is a 6-10 forward/center. Players of that magnitude don’t come along very often.

Garrett (6-6), a native of Los Angeles, was chosen in the 22nd round of the baseball draft in June and signed with the Cincinnati Reds in August. NCAA rules allow Garrett to play college basketball and professional baseball.

Pelle is from Compton, Calif., and Sampson (6-7) is from Akron, Ohio.

The ruling raises an awkward issue for St. John’s. For six years, the Red Storm graduated every four-year player who came through under former coach Norm Roberts. Now Lavin’s first full recruiting class is tarnished, though it still brings in some outstanding talent, led by forward Maurice Harkless of Queens.

Guards D’Angelo Harrison, Nurideen Lindsey and Phil Greene, forward Sir’Dominic Pointer and post man Godsgift Achiuwa are the other players who are going to have to grow up quickly in the Big East.

Does anyone have any info regarding whether or not it's even possible to get these guys playing for the second semester?

Yes NR did graduate all his players that suited up.  But don't forget Derwin Kitchen and someone else from that class (name escapes me) were also ruled ineligible.

I just have a bad feeling about the clearinghouse especially with the issues that happened previously with Kitchen

Anyone know how often players who are ruled ineligible end up sitting out and staying with the team that they committed to? Or do they usually re-open their recruitments?

Gotta say I'm surprised how harsh Lenny was.  I mean your coming off a magical carpet ride season and using words like tarnished and tweaking the players by questioning their character is way over the top IMO.
