Useless observations

You can't really take much from this type of exibition good or bad, but I will press forward anyway with some random observations.
1. Who produced last night's telecast the guy who made the Blair Witch Project? Camera jumping up and down made me feel like I was on one of those simulator rides at Disney.
2. Gods Gift. WE ARE SJU is a fan. Not sure how he will fare against bigger teams but guy has some of the best hands I have seen on an SJU big. Sort of reminds me of Macklin who finished up at Florida. GG would have been a tremendous help on last years team.
3. Harkless. I can see the "poor man's Sealy" comparisons. Obviously Malik was better this point but it is a nice compliment to be compared to him in any shape or form.
4. We are going to get absolutely brutalized on the boards.
5. For a small team we do not have great outside shooting.
6. Again, need to see how it translates against bigger, better comp but I am very much looking forward to the Nuri era as long as it may last. Sort of remins me of Monte Ellis w/o the jumper.
7. That kid that Marillac raves about is nasty. WTF is he doing at CW Post?  Maybe other schools heard that Marillac raved about him and remembered he also raved about Geno so they blackballed him?
8. Green. Big fan. Might turn out to be our best shooter as well. Like his little fall back. By BE he will be starting over Stith.
9. Jamal White's bald spot is very disconcerting. He reminds me of Grainville Waiters.
10. Harrison. I like his game and confidence. I do not think he is going to be the shooter he is advertised to be though. Shoots a line drive. I am not saying he won't make shots or be a good player. I think he will. Just it is hard to shoot a high percentage when you shot a line drive.  Basically he is no Larry Wright, but then again those type of guys only pass through once in a lifetime.

I am thinking 15 or 16 wins, but it will be fun. If they all stay around and Pelle ever shows up, next year should really be something.

Also one thing we didn't get to see much of yesterday was our guys at the line. How will this team fair at the charity stripe? We are notorious for being poor there, hopefully these kids are better

God's Gift impressed me with his ability to run the court and finish with some nice move around the basket but he might have some trouble against BE bigs because he is closer to 6'6 than 6'8. Harkless is going to be a stud and Lindsey and Harrison looked to be as good as advertised. How about Phil Greene, he looked awesome. I think we have some really good pieces and it should be a very fun year

Here are my observations

- The zone in the first half was good, nice rotation, and they were closing out quick.
- God's Gift in the first half, soo impressive with the offensive skills, very surprising, didn't think he would be able to score like that. He has a great post presence, strength is apparent, gotta see if he can post up and hit a 8-12 foot jumper.
- Nuri off the dribble is lethal, gets to the rim really well.
- Phil Greene is the shooter on this team, very solid stroke.
- Starting the 2nd half, I was wondering where was Harkless...and wow..there he is. Harkless was awesome to start the half with 8 points, getting rebounds. I didn't notice his size earlier but in the paint he is big, should probably play the 3 but he will have to do work down low at times.
- This team would benefit so much from having another guy the size of God's Gift. Hopefully Pelle is back.
- It seems like, at least for yesterday, there was an emphasis to get to the rim, not as much shooting, at least in the 2nd half.
- Greene is really impressive with his awareness and shooting, solid quickness as well, seems like a 5 tool player.
- Harrison seems to be a solid player, will be great off the bench
- Obviously it's going to be different against stiffer competition, but through this game, the zone was excellent, really didn't allow CW Post do much.

Harrison won't be off the bench.  Stith will end up sitting for Greene most likely.  Pointer if lineup is big.

ill throw in a couple of useless observations.

All 6 recruits can put it in the hoop.  Defense will be a work in progress that will improve over time.  Rebounding will be an issue all year long due to our size but also our depth, b/c we will prob be playing zone exclusively to keep players out of foul trouble.   

 -GG has great hands.  Great finisher around the rim.  He hooked abt 3 times on post moves last night getting a foul on only one.  If that becomes a trend, no doubt opposing coaches will tell the refs to keep an eye on it. 

-Phil Greene really stood out.  Looked like a veteran, let's the game come to him and was very much in control. 

-Sir Dom appears to be the dirty work, intangible guy.  Great on D, great motor.  He wasnt very assertive looking for his shot except for the two drives he had at the end of the half and shot clock.  Both lefty finishes.  As season goes on i think he'll emerge. 

-Harkless is long.  Was great on the boards in limited minutes.  Love his mid-range game. 

-Nuri was what i expected.  Hopefully there is a mid-range game to keep the D honest.

-Stith was Stith.  Play good D, be a leader on the court, limit the turnovers and let other players take the shots and were fine.  That's what he did last night.

-D'angelo's shot wasnt falling but he has an ability to drive and finish around the rim.  More of a creator than i thought.

We were 4-10.  Only 4 players took FT's.

Gift 1-4
Nuri 0-2
Harrison and Stith were the others.  Forgot what they hit exactly.

Not having seen any of the players, other than in video form, it was a pleasant surprise to here the staff talking up a player (Phil Green), and actually see him come out a play a really good game.  I can't remember how many preseason player predictions that never seemed to come true.  This prediction seemed right for a change.

If he hit 10 threes last night I would have the same opinion. Ilike his game and think he is going to be a good player. Generally someone that shoots a line drive shot does not shoot a high percentage.

  I liked the fact that the team as a whole was unselfish.  For a bunch of freshmen playing their first collegiate game, no one seemed to try too hard or force anything.  Good passing.  That's what impressed me the most. 

 Also, we have guys that can make shots.  Finally.  Everyone looked like they can finish around the hoop, in traffic.

I was an sju fan when Ron was around.  He had a bigger torso than Mo.  Mo has maybe 3 inches on Ron.  Ron was a more physical player, Mo seems to be more of a finesse player, when compared to Ron.  Bottom line is we can compare these two from a skill and potential impact standpoint.  Just saying Mo's potentially the best freshman since Ron is a huge compliment.  There's one comparo I don't want to make.  Let's hope Mo stays around for more than two seasons. 

Looks like I have some allies who see some visual similarities :)



If you wern't around for Ron, then you wouldn't get that if there's anybody who Mo has physical similarities to it'd be Malik Sealy.

Your picking comments.  I wasn't an STJ fan when Ron played for them but I said I watched him play in HS.  I don't think it matters that I wasn't a fan of STJ when he played.  You don't see the same thing me and a few others see.  That's fine.  We all have our opinions.  I made the comment last night at the game and two people I did not know turned and agreed as well.  It is what it is.  He's a great player.  That is something both can agree on.

I've seen him play a 3 or 4 times and he doesn't have line drive shot.  Cedric Jackson had a line drive shot :)

If last night was his worst shooting game that I saw then we are in pretty good shape.  To be honest I didnt think we gave him enough looks early.  I wanted to see some picks and screens to open him up.

Nuri is a scorer as advertised. God ran the floor well and is a skilled big man. Greene suprised me. Like his game and I liked him and Pointer playing together. Harkless played well in the 2nd half and this kid has a ton of potential. Can't wait until we step up in competition level and see how this kids repond. Good start.

Thought the team played real well for their first time playing together.

GG was way better than I expected. Seems polished with good hands.

Mo had a slow start but showed what he can do in the second half. He would be huge as a 3 but will have to play 4 mostly.

Harrison had an off shooting night from 3 but the kid is strong as hell going to the rim coupled with a good midrange game. Also a good passer with 4 assists and 0 turnovers.

Lindsey can get to the lane and finish pretty well. Might get the rondo treatment if he cant hit outside shots but his strok didnt look bad. Surround him with harrison, green, and harkless and hell have plenty of options for kick outs.

Green looked awesome. He is kind of a hybrid between Lindsey and Harrison. Can facilitate and score, is long and quick as well.

Pointer is strong and athletic. He will make plays necessary for us to win but may not showup in the box score. Will board, get steals, and blocks.

Stith seemed pretty solid to me. Didnt hurt us, played good d, didnt take any bad shots. Hes a level below the newcomers talent wise.

I was told there was a lot of trash talking on our part on the court, this team is cocky, but that comes with being young. They will get hit in the mouth and get a reality check.

That being said, we are a NYC team, cockiness is a quality we should have
