THE SKINNY: William & Mary, picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association, led 33-26 at the half. The Tribe's strength is perimeter shooting, and they knocked down seven triples before intermission. The Red Storm shot just 10-for-31 in the first half. Harkless paced St. John's with 10 first-half points.

St. John’s began a new era for its basketball program last year, with the newly installed coach Steve Lavin pacing the sideline with his slick hair and quick tongue. The excitement Lavin injected into the Red Storm was palpable in that first season, but the real Lavin era — with nearly an entirely new roster of his choosing — did not tip off until Monday night at Carnesecca Arena. Lavin, however, was not in the building.

Um, Steve hadn't had "slick hair" for a quarter of a decade before joining St. Johns....

     Once again, a St. John's team that can't hit foul shots, even if their trying to throw the ball into the Atlantic Ocean. Once again, it could have been a bigger victory. Once again, the players could have more points, if they could hit their foul shots. This is how this team will lose close games. Keep fouling them.

The first half of Monday night’s opener against William & Mary certainly wasn’t what was envisioned with the talk of a new era in St. John’s basketball.

Steve Lavin at home recovering from prostate surgery; three top recruits ineligible for the start of the season; and a nine-point deficit to William & Mary in front of a lackluster crowd at Carnesecca Arena.

The second half, though, was the future – and present – at St. John’s. Overwhelming defensive pressure, effective transition offense and a youthful energy that has been missing from the Red Storm program for most of the past decade. Moreover, the 4500 fans in the building woke up and made it tough for William & Mary.

When you’ve been to the places Nurideen Lindsey has been, seen the things he has seen, endured what he has endured, petty issues such as stats and starts are hardly concerns.
“When you’re young, and basketball is the most important thing in your life, for some guys the only thing in their life, you worry about those things,’’ Lindsey told The Post. “I’ve learned otherwise.’’
Lindsey, 21, has buried two brothers who were killed in his hometown of Philadelphia, and his best friend, who died of cancer. He walked away from the game he loves, the game he plays with such grace and ease he garnered the nickname ‘Too Easy” when he schooled Lance Stephenson in a showcase game.

A new era in St. John's basketball got off to a flying start on Monday night.

The Red Storm, with six of their seven regulars making their Division I debuts, won their season opener versus William & Mary, 74-59 at Carnesecca Arena.

After trailing 33-26 at the half, St. John's played a near-perfect second 20 minutes, overwhelming the Tribe, picked to finish sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association.

"We're very happy with the way we played in the second half," said St. John's special assistant Gene Keady. "We came out with a lot more energy as you can tell, and played like we practice."

Berry wasn't part of Mullin-Wennington class. My personal favorite class Realfan was zwalick, Dove, Ellis, Warren, George Johnson, Mckoy, Russell, Sealy, Werdann, Artest, Barkley, Thorton, Postell, Hardy, Harkless class.

Mullin  & Wennington came in '81
Berry came in '84 as a transfer when Chris & Bill were seniors I think,
which was the final four 84/85 year

you're right..... Berry came the year after Bill and Chris showed up.  I believe that Looie made the statement when he got Berry....  "Last year we were playing with sling shots.  This year we'll be playing with guns."  Or something like that.

Berry showed up during Mullin's and Wennington's senior year.  Not their sophomore year.
