QUEENS, N.Y. - Head coach Steve Lavin's new-look St. John's basketball team (4-3) visits Kentucky's Rupp Arena for the first time since its appearance in the 1985 Final Four as two of the nation's storied men's basketball programs and top recruiting classes are set to collide on Thursday, Dec. 1 on ESPN2 as part of the SEC-BIG EAST Challenge. The 7:30 p.m. contest between the Red Storm and No. 1/1 Wildcats (6-0) of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) will air live nationally on ESPN2, with Dan Shulman and Dick Vitale calling the action from courtside and Shannon Spake reporting from the sidelines. The matchup can be heard live on the official radio flagship of St. John's Basketball, Bloomberg Radio 1130-AM, and on RedStormSports.com (subscription), with veteran announcer John Minko and "The Coach" Tim O'Toole as the analyst.

St. John’s Assistant Coach Mike Dunlap
On matching up against No. 1/1 Kentucky:
“We’re still in a phase of teaching our system so the focus is more on us than it is on our opponent. We have great respect for all of our opponents, but the fact is: we haven’t had a true road game yet this season. There’s a lot of firsts with this matchup. Like Coach Lavin reiterates, we have to keep our focus and temperament where it belongs – and that’s on improvement. If we do that, we’ll be fine. At this point, as far as dealing with the scouting report and individual Kentucky players, our group can’t handle all that information just yet. Too much information will slow them down. Instead, we’ve put the focus on improving each day. But we won’t be satisfied with playing a strong game and losing by 15 points – that’s not in our personalities. We’re an aggressive team. We’re going in with an attitude of: we’re going to go down there and see if we can do something special.”

His ongoing recovery from prostate-cancer surgery means Coach Steve Lavin will not accompany the St. John's team for Thursday's game at Kentucky. Believe it or not, assistant Mike Dunlap, who will lead the Red Storm at UK, has experience in picking up the reins for a team suddenly absent its head coach. He helped guide Arizona through the 2008-09 season when Lute O

When a college basketball team takes to the road for a game in a hostile environment, such as Kentucky’s Rupp Arena, the only friendly faces are those on the bench.
St. John’s plays at No. 1-ranked Kentucky tomorrow night and coach Steve Lavin, the face of the program, will not be there.
Lavin said yesterday he returned from prostate cancer surgery too soon and needs to build stamina before returning to the bench. He would not guess at a timetable, meaning one of the nation’s youngest teams will have to succeed or fail without its leader.
“We all know it’s less than ideal,’’ Lavin said

“Fear Factor” would probably be an appropriate subtitle for this one.

St. John’s, maybe the most inexperienced team in the country with six new players in their seven-man rotation, will play its first road game of the season Thursday night, drawing No. 1 Kentucky at Rupp Arena.

But Kentucky coach John Calipari said the Red Storm (4-3) shouldn’t be the only ones feeling apprehension when the ball goes up.

“This is a scary game,” said Calipari, whose 6-0 Wildcats this week ascended to the top spot for the first time since January, 2010, after North Carolina lost to UNLV Saturday. “I just watched another tape today and they were up eight with six minutes to go on Arizona. . . . You’re going to see a team that’s trying to steal every ball, dives on the floor, takes charges. These guys ball. They play and it’s going to be a good challenge for us.”

One day after another, it seems as though the hits keep coming for St. John’s.

Just 72 hours removed from a shocking home loss to Northeastern, it was revealed that head coach Steve Lavin would not be making a return to the bench anytime soon after he told ESPN’s Andy Katz that he may have come back too early.

Assistant coach Mike Dunlap will be filling in for the foreseeable future, which begins Thursday night in Lexington when the Red Storm take on top-ranked Kentucky as part of the SEC/Big East Challenge.
