St. John's basketball continues to show upside [NY Daily News]
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:37:44 AM »
St. John’s had suffered an 81-59 thumping by No. 1 Kentucky Thursday night and it seemed Red Storm assistant coach Mike Dunalp had one word on his mind: “ Fordham,” he said.

And he repeated it a couple of times.

Dunlap said it three different times and the point he made was not lost. The Jonnies suffered an 84-81 upset loss at Fordham last Dec. 11 and it seemed a moment of crisis. It left St. John’s 5-3 and looking like a team in trouble.

Three months later they were talking about the loss as a turning point, the moment that woke the team up to all its potential and carried it to its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2002.

Yes, St. John’s lost badly to the Wildcats. Yes, they looked outclassed by the team that most likely has the same level of talent that the Big East will hit the Johnnies with. But St. John’s is, as Dunlap said, “a work in progress.”

There is s big difference here.  Last years group was used to losing and coming back.  Not sure if this years kids with big reputations, and some big egos can handle such a beating early on.  Lets hope we rebound from this loss and move on in a positive direction.

This Detroit game is huge for their confidence and ego. A loss could be disastrous, from the mental aspect

I actually feel like an ego "reset" is good for them.  A game like that is humbling and shows our kids how far they have to go compete with the teams that their egos think they are on par with.  I dont think our kids are in a corner crying.   I hope they're watching video today, breaking down tape with Dunlap and Lavin and looking at what they need to do.  These kids are playing at this level for games like this one.  They know what they have ahead of them which is good.

That's absurd.   The Northeastern game was a flub, nothing more.  Uk game was humbling.  Pitt lost to long beach state, cinch to Presbyterian and a long line of other bad losses this season early by solid teams.  Uk was a game we were supposed to lose on paper by about as much as we did.  The kids experienced it and now time to move past it.  The only game that really hurt is was the Northeastern game.  IF we win the next 3, even the northeastern game will have been just a hiccup in a reasonably decent performance OOC prior to league play.  Let's just beat a tough Detroit team and take it one game at a time.

Problem is, those teams mentioned all have upperclassmen leadership who have been thru situations like this. They have a head coach on the bench and go deeper than 7. WE have none of that.

Nah, Roge.

Aint no team in the BE got close to the same talent as UK. I look at the Cats and I see David Stern handshakes all around.

When Mike Gilcrest look like he a biddy on that frontline.... my God.

Agree with Marco Iona or Gael Baldi-Neastern should have been humbling but if you are right and it was a "flub"look for alot more "flubs" this season.

If we win the next 3 which we are capable of doing, there are no more "flubs" on the schedule, only Big EasT teams, UCLA and Duke.  A loss at that caliber is not a big disappointment because they all play at the top level.  Some more so than others.

No offense to Dave who runs a great SJ fan site but the two gents referenced above would not cut it on redmen.com.  One is an Iona troll here and the other is out of touch with reality in general.

Baldi has some perspective on the team and players while the other guy reminds me of an old man in the diner that orders a hamburger and complains it did not look or taste like prime rib. I normally do not post but his insulting comments about the team, its assistant coach and negative outlook disgusts me as a SJ fan.

We have a coach recovering from cancer surgery, a team missing two of its highest ranked freshmen, a team that had to hold special tryouts for walk ons, etc. and this clown feels no shame in claiming our kids deserved to lose to the #1 team with 7 McDonald AA's and three NBA players.

I am out of here !!

So you don't think we will be favored in any more games after the next 3 because you say there are no more possible flubs. Home games vs bottom ranked BE teams are not games we should win. Guess we will win only 4 to 7 games total for season according to your calculations.

Once we get to big east play, no there aren't any more "should-win" games at that point until we're a consistently top tier big east team.  You're assuming that the entire big east season is "won't win", which is not my calculation at all.  We'win some and lose some, but those teams all play in our league and presumably at a similar level.  Don't know how many we'll win.  I only know that for an NCAA bid, we need to try to win the next three games, then fight it out in league play to land somewhere in or near the top half of the league.  this early, I don't know who the "should win" games are?  Do you?

Do you?
No.

Now it all makes sense.  Marco Baldi is realfan and realfan is Marco Baldi.

I wasn't aware of a standard of excellence over there. Anyways every one here is allowed to have their own opinion no matter how absurd it might be. I don't agree with a lot of people here doesn't mean they are bad people or less of fans than any other poster. Remember you're on the same team.

Why even give credence to someone who would post something ridiculous? Why let it bother you? You obviously know realfan is one of the more pessimistic fans out there. That's his thing.

Did anyone in their right mind think St. John's with 7 scholarship players was going to beat #1 Kentucky who is just stacked with lotto talent? If you did you're delusional. This game was an L.

Everyone should be pleased with the way GG played, Phil Greene's confidence, Moe Harkless' potential. As should everyone be concerned with Lindsey being so 1 dimensional and poor decision making. This team could have easily played a cupcake schedule, racked up wins, and got pounded in conference play. This is a tough group of guys and getting beat bad will only fuel their desire to be better.

If you don't want to read or post here. No one is forcing you to but I think should. There is no better place for Red Storm hoops than here and I'd encourage you to post more often.

Troubling? We lost to the #1 team in the country at their place by 22!  They have five projected lottery picks for THIS year and a senior that has been projected as high as a late first rounder.  They returned three starters and we returned none.

This game was a GIFT regardless of the outcome.  It will be in the back of all the players' minds the whole offseason as they work to improve to get to the level UK was at Thursday.  This will probably be a game these kids remember their entire career at St. John's, and I'm hoping they show video of it when we are in the Final Four in 2-3 years.

Couldn't you argue that we played them the same both halves which isn't necessarily a bad thing. We were down by 11 at the half which isn't terrible, and then were down by 11 in the second half. Consider a short rotation, endurance factors for the players and inexperience, losing by 22 is not so horrible. I understand that 22 is a blowout no matter how much you break it down, and the player development and how the team reacts after this game is crucial as well.
