They were sitting on one side behind the hoop decked out in SJU gear.
Who was sitting in the section to their right?

If SJU is trying to pass them off as students, they need to work on their lying skills.

OK here is the deal with student tickets.  We have assigned seats but they spread us out amongst the 6 sections behind the baskets.  Unfortunately they also sell student seats to non-students who I've seen every year for the last few years in the student section and at the Big East tourney and such who are obviously not students.  Then there are kids who buy season tickets just to sell them, or sell the ones they can't go to, or buy the tickets and sell them to ticket brokers who then sell them.  They could easily avoid this a number of ways (like just handing out tickets in the lobby at MSG and you must swipe your ID to get it)  but they don't seem to want to do any of that stuff for some reason.  Then you have all these people who innocently bought tix from a student or broker and they get pissed when they have to stand the entire game.  The way they do student tickets is so messed up and we seem to be the only school in the country with this problem.  Our ticket office is inept.

I completely agree. But I also think there is a degree of sinister behavior going on as well. No one has an answer. They all pass it off someone else, who does the same thing.

I think st johns should make student tickets free, designate the 6 sections behind both baskets and have a first come first serve policy.

The students could have gone yesterday. Was it too cold for them?

They should have that fat male cheerleader run around the court with the flag again. That'll bring in some fans.

They definitely could have. I came from ct and it was wayyy to cold for me but i made sure that i was there to support this team. I'm just curious as to why if student involvement is such a problem for most game why hasnt the school though about free student tickets. I personally think it would be a good idea to have both baselines full of stj fans instead of half full with mayb 25% of that being students.

We are actually still on winter break.  The crowd of students will be MUCH better on Saturday vs Nova.

If you're on winter break, unless you're spending winter break in prison, the students should be at the game.
I would not be surprised if there is a push to eliminate them from MSG altogether. It would have my vote.

Eliminate students from MSG games altogether?  Are you nuts?  If you take the students out of the garden, you might as well just play the game in a library.  Did you see after we went on a run to get within 3 with about 7 minutes left?  You could barely hear a peep outside of the student section.  The game at the Garden last year that weren't during winter break all had fantastic environments from the students.   No school fills their student section during breaks, St. John's is no exception.

Winter break. So the students return home to Queens from the school they commute to in Queens. It's amazing how St.John's wastes every advantage the BE gives them. This is just one example.

Agreed, free tickets will increase attendance and convert more fans

Since most of our students probably view going to a St J's basketball game as the equivalent to attending classes I guess they cease all school related activities during the inter-session but all 12 students that do attend the games when school is in session vow to return and attend the rest of the home games. (Rutgers and Seton Hall road games are out of the question as they would have to cross state lines and are afraid they might violated the Interstate Commerce Act).

You are clueless.  The school has changed so much in the last decade.  The students who want a college experience and enjoy the basketball team live in the dorms.  The dorms account for around 4,000 students.  Take those students out of the area and you have less students at the basketball games.  Most of the commuters do not get involved with the campus at all and have no real connection to the school except that they take a few classes a day there and go home.  It also doesn't help that probably half of the commuters don't even know what basketball is because they are foreigners.  Also, most people like going to the games with groups of their friends.  It's tough to get a group of students together when they are spread out across the country.  Another thing with commuters is nowadays if you commute to school it probably means that you don't have the financial means to go away to school.  As a result, most commuters have jobs and stuff that may prohibit them from attending games.
