St. John's Senior Grad Project
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:41:54 PM »
Hey Guys. At my high school we are required to do a senior grad project. The good thing is that we can do it on pretty much whatever we choose. I have chosen to do my project on the history of St. John's basketball. I was wondering if you guys have any recommendation as to what I should include in my project. I also have to interview someone that has something to do with what I am doing my project on. Do you guys know of anybody who would be availible for me to interview. Thanks

Marco Baldi has plenty of time on his hands and so does Ricky Smith from redmen.com for an interview. That way you can get a 2 for 1 at the same time and save money :). Maybe get a point-counterpoint interview between Baldi and Boo. I'd pay to read that

I'd break the report down by coaches at SJU and the history of the program under each coach. The chapter on Norm Roberts shouldn't end up being more than a paragraph.

I don't know if he'd respond but it can't hurt to email chris monasch. The ideal interview would be Loooie. It would be a total longshot but think big and if you happened to score that one it would be a home run.

No joke but you could also write about the changes in the ways fans interact with regards to the program and how much the websites have developed and keep tabs on recruits and players by things like Facebook and twitter.

Good luck

If you want interviews with anyone on the current team you could contact Mark Fratto via email. He is always really good with helping out if you're doing a school project.

There are two eras of St.John's basketball.

1. Before Lou Carnesecca retired in 1992.
2. After Lou Carnesecca retired in 1992.

If you're going to interview anyone.
He is St.John's basketball.

  Sounds awesome. Good luck.

Louie would be a great interview.  Mahoney may not be a bad consolation prize though. Long time assistant under Louie , one time head coach, and been a part of the school for many, many years.

There are a lot of people, probably more on Redmen.com, that could probably help you in getting in touch with someone to make it happen.

I just googled it and you could try sending a letter to Lou with your request.

I think you should try to contact a former player like Malik Boothe and ask him about his 4 years. Huge UPS and downs.

also a great idea. Any player from last years team would be a great interview. They all went through so much up's and down's

You also may want to try e-mail coach Lavin and see if he responds to an interview request.  With his free time you might just get lucky. (lavins@stjohns.edu)

Another good guy to interview might be Ron Linfonte, he's been the trainer for quite some time (linfontr@stjohns.edu)

I think it would be great to dive into the history of St. John's being a commuter school in the past having all local NYC talent to being a residential campus and having players from all over the country. How St. John's basketball has evolved over time. Is it close to coming full circle and being a basketball juggernaught again?

The idea about interviewing boothe is a good one.  Not necessarily interviewing boothe, but a write-up on that team would be nice.  The ups and downs, and how a group of seniors worked their way to the tournament after going through such adversity.  None of them were heavily recruited (except JB), took their lumps, weren't given a chance, etc.

You could easily send a note to dwight hardy, DJ or sean Evans on twitter.  I'm sure they would do it.

Just trying to help you, but one problem you might run into is that interviewing Lou has been done to exhaustion.
And he's in his late 80s. I spoke to him on Sunday. However, if you want to try and do it, a call might be your best bet.

So, that said, come up with a different angle, otherwise, it's another interview with Lou about the one great year this program has had.
And we've all heard that interview and seen the sweater, and remember Georgetown stomping us twice.

The greatest accomplishment SJU basketball has achieved is longevity. 100 years of basketball, and 100, or rather, 80 years of being in it.

You may want to start by downloading the Media Guide from the athletic department website, for any stats, dates, or specifics like that which make there way into your project.

There's also a video on the history of SJU bball that was done a number of years back, that might prove helpful as well.
