What's everyone's take on Gathers' quotes?

He hopes to be a redmen but if not he still will always be a redmen at heart. He is ours to lose. We are final 3 in 4 top 100 recruits lists. We already have Branch as a missing piece. Lav signs just two top 100 to go along with Branch and one JC and that is one hell of a class to compliment the current group! When was the last time you saw 6 top 100 players on a St. John's team? Only the Mullin-Berry years come to mind and by year two they were top 10 in most polls.
Keep the faith Moose! We need you out there!!!

Gathers sounds like he wants to be here.  What's the holdup then?

His brother!

Bingo, Bum!  It's that simple.

Kate Upton Dougie

 Been there...... ;)

After every SJU loss, we should all watch this video before we start posting our frustrations. I guaranty it will substantially reduce the negative rhetoric on these boards.  :)

Damn, she deserves her own thread in off topic. Whose hittin that?

You know, when you read the title of this thread, and just see the videos of Kate Upton in the thread, the title could mean something ENTIRELY DIFFERENT than what was originally intended.

What do you guys think the odds are that there's a big man out there... JUCO or HS.. that Lavin is pursuing, who we haven't heard about yet?
A project?  Somebody who only came on to the radar his senior year or grew two inches?

Because the way it looks now... we're going to be undersized for the foreseeable future.    Don't get me wrong, it'll be Christmas-in-April if the staff can sign two of  Gathers, Sampson, Obekpa or Sheppard ... and to a lesser extent Sanchez.

But none of those guys are over 6'8, and Gift graduates next year.   Obekpa might be the second best shot blocker in his class, but he'll still be very undersized as a Center in our league.  We might be signing more skill in the post, but around our conference; Drummond, Sims, Melo, Dieng on Lousiville.. these guys have given us a ton of trouble.

Now that we have at least one pg in the fold, I gotta think we're looking for a big man to add.  Even if it's as a roll player.  Anybody heard anything?

Obekpa is listed at 6'9" most places which isn't "very undersized".  Gathers is 6'7" but about 250lbs.  Jakarr is at least 6'8".  Sanchez is 6'9".  Add a few guys in that range and we won't be killed by other teams size.  Drummond isn't much taller than 6'8" and was shorter than Harkless from what I saw when we played them.  Sims is tall but more of a jump shooter.  He doesnt kill us with post moves.   Dieng gave us fits because his shotblocking ability, not his height.  Obekpa would be more than sufficient as a center in this league at 6'9".  Anybody remember how imposing Etan Thomas was at an undersized 6'9"?  I believe Obekpa has a 7'2" wingspan which is the real difference.

I don't know anything about what other big men the staff is looking for, but why aren't more teams interested in Jordan Dickerson, 7 foot, 240 lbs center from IMG in Bradenton, FL? I only see Nova as being interested.

I think Drummond is a good two inches taller than Moe, but it's not worth arguing over, and your point is well taken.

My question is then what's our backup plan if we miss out on Chris O and get say Gathers and Jakarr.  Seems plausible enough no?

We would play Harkless, Sampson, Gathers, and God's Gift.   A big improvement over this season, and a huge step in the right direction.  My concern is just that we'd still be playing an undersized PF at C.   And Gift would graduate, meaning we'd have to find and start a freshmen the next year or play Gathers at the 5.

Clearly almost anything is an improvement over this year because our depth is so ridiculously thin.  But going forward it'd be nice to have a well rounded roster.   Guys transfer, recruits can end up ineligible, and sooner or later we'll face the injury bug like everyone else.   I really think we're continuing to play with fire if we don't have size somewhere on the roster.

I'm not saying we need size at the expense of talent.  Clearly coach has his priorities in the right order, lock up Gathers, Sampson etc.
But it looks like even if we get our wish and sign two of the big 3, we're still not "golden" in terms of solving our front court problems.

Those numbers are not impressive at all given the likely difference in size between him and the kid who has to guard him at the 5-AA level.

It plays into my theory, which I think is more valid than ever.  Anthropomorphic studies have shown how average heights of Americans have leveled off the past 20-30 years.  True big men in basketball (legit 6'9" or taller) are harder and harder to find. Notice how many big men in college did not grow up in the states.  More foreign players with better skill sets at a younger age is creating more of a trend to get int'l players.

I predict Coach backs up SJ's being an international player in recruiting. The staff will locate a foreign big - if not this recruiting year, 2013 onward.  So someone will pop up out of nowhere, much like Alex Len popped up for Maryland.  No one had a sniff of Len going to MD. We heard rumors, but nothing was pinned down.

The worst QB in football

funny how sanchez 3rd year was better then eli's 3rd or 4th year. Now Eli is one of the top 5 in football. Let's see Sanchez out of Schottys 3 and out offense before we make statements like that. Drew Brees was so bad they flat out replaced him with Rivers, under guess who, Schotty..

It may have been asked in the game thread, but at one point they showed Lavin talking to a kid that may have been a recruit. Anyone know who it was? Having Branch watch a game with Lavin got him to commit so it would be a good thing if it was.
