You guys kill Norm, but he brought some good guys here. I loved rooting for those guys, they were our boys from day 1. We sucked with them from scratch, but they took us back to the tourny. What a 4 year career those guys had
Stith not part of that group.

He was the last connection to the boys

Norm chased out Edmonson. Why wouldn't he have eventually chased Stith out? The list is long for Lavin in terms of players, but it was always long for Norm Roberts.
I'm not going to bother naming all of the guys that left our program under Norm, or never even made it onto campus, but the real problem here is that we have a new staff, and it's the same crap.

If the reason Stith left is because he didnt like Dunlap, he should have been a man and stick it out till the end of the season, he owed that much to his teammates.

I don't care about the guys that have left.  They obviously couldn't hang.  My concern is the influence of those departures on our core group. I don't want any of them to leave.

Norm was here for years, Lavin has been here for what, half a year?

He was asked to leave by the head coach, but stuck it out and busted his ass. Now hes leaving because he doesnt like someone? Somethings rotten in Denmark

i see dunlop as the type of coach whos going to lose his share of players because of his demanding ways. but by all accounts hes a great teacher and if you stick it out with him , listen, learn he will take you to places as aplayer, most coaches never would. i once had a drama teacher, director who did just that. there is great wisdom there. the ups and downs will be there.  progress to regression to progress. but if you tough it out one day the light will go on, and more times than not it will all be worth it.

Norm lost Quinton Hosely, Rodney Epperson, Cedric Jackson, Dexter Gray, Jermaine Maybanks & Tyler Jones in two years.

Is there a subtle difference?

In terms of chasing out players, yes. Norm lost one key recruit just because he showed up. The point is that it wasn't all really good kids with Norm who did the right thing. Remember Doug Wiggins? Derwin Kitchen?

I think Hosely went right to Fresno State, and he was good. Epperson I never heard from again.

@bball_fan:

I'm not saying you are not friends with Stith, or that what you were told is incorrect, just merely going to state my opinion on the matter (strictly opinion).  What you claim Stith said about him not liking the "playing style" doesn't really make sense to me.  Not for nothing, is playing style really important when you're playing 5 minutes a game?  As far as practices being much more difficult the response is twofold.  First off, if you don't want a hard practice, don't play in the Big East.  Secondly, is this not the same coaching staff that was present last season?  I would imagine the practice style hasn't changed much (outside of having half the bodies).  In addition, if it was an issue with coach Dunlap (or anyone else for that matter), why come back this season only to leave with 8 games left?  It just leads me to believe personal reasons (such as family issues) makes more sense as a reason to bail now.  I wouldn't imagine there was any ill will if his father was seen at the game, but who knows, I'm not inside any of their heads.  Like I said, just my opinion.

As it stands, i'll believe what I read about Stith citing family reasons, and I still respect him for staying at SJU even though he was being recruited over with no chance of significant playing time.  I appreciate the hard work he has put in, as well as his help with getting our Fresh 5 accustomed to BE play.  I wish him the best of luck in the future.

i never said he left strictly because of dunlap's practice regiment. It was a combination of that plus not seeing any personal growth, gain, or shine. Most coaches that are ridiculously strict or tough will have their players stick with them if the players personally benefit through winning, exposure, etc. If you have the tough practice regiment combined with no personal gain or growth, thats like having the worst of both worlds. Like i said originally, i dont personally agree with stiths decision. Just explaining where it came from.

We lost our two worst players.  It's not like Harrison, Moe, or Greene left us.

Nuri was not one of our two worst players.  In fact,  in some games of the 9 total he looked like our best.  In others he looked like our second best.

Ok so Harkless and Garrett are easy. Harkless will enter the draft and Garrett will leave to concentrate on baseball. But what will be the circumstances behind the exodus of the rest of SJU survivor Island?
Gods Gift- My prediction is he leaves to concentrate on becoming Pope.
Sir Dominic Pointer- leaving to become an actor like Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Alec Guiness.
Greene-after watching Jeremy Lin has decided transfering to Harvard gives him the best chance to play in the NBA.
Harrison-after reading on these boards that Baylor pays better than SJU he has decided to transfer there.
Branch-after reading so much about Iona from Baldi and Cuse from Poison he is currently deciding between Iona and Cuse.
Lavin- after reading about Yankee GM Brian Cashman's and former Met GM Steve Phillips discretions as GM's of NY teams Mrs Lavin is requesting that Steve quit to save their marriage.
Dunlap- named new SJU coach of the "walkon five"

Slasher movie metaphors;  "Animal House" analogies; and now this clever little ditty?  You're coming on strong Wasju.  However, I do fear your peaking a little early in the year.  I hope your not forgotten come Poster of the Year nomination time.

I have a problem with people who selectively choose to post here. This is specifically directed to you bball_fan. If you were here through and through and posted regularly and decided to share this info than I'd be ok with it. In most aspects you are telling the truth with a few omitted areas. There are of course two sides to every story and you chose to share one.

You are right about Omari, Roberts, and Roberts leaving the program. They were wisely told that they wouldn't see playing time and would be recruited over. They chose to leave for better situations for themselves. They are all doing pretty well (Well Omari is still riding pine but for good program). This happens ALL the time with every program when new coaching staffs come in. What you conveniently left out was that Stith was also given that same speech and he wanted to stick it out. He knew exactly what was ahead of him, the challenges, etc.

Also with R Roberts there is no Polee so that argument is kind of moot point.

As for Dunlap he's 100% of the reason for Sean Evans turn around last season. He was ready to quit the team. Dunlap brought him into the fold, talked him out of it, and they put in extra work. It took Evans a half a season to stop being stubborn but he finally bought in and was rewarded. You've heard the saying you can only lead a horse to water. There's a lot of effort made by the staff to get these kids to the water, some drink, others quit.

Stith didn't do a lot of things he should have done as a student athlete and I'll leave it at that. He's gone and don't want to tarnish his reputation. Just as you shouldn't come here trying to tarnish the coaching staff's either. If this info was between Stith and you then why come here and air it out selectively? You come here and say I told you so then in the next breathe you say you have nothing to prove. Which is it?

When I post is my prerogative and no one elses. I dont understand why you have a problem, but if you do then fine, thats your problem not mine. If i say anything untruthful then point it out to me specifically so i can apologize for the mistake or defend the truth in what i say.

I didnt "conveniently" leave out anything, the fact that stith was probably asked/ pressured to leave originally was irrelevant to my point. My point was that Lavin put pressure on certain underclassmen to transfer, and he did so wrongly and foolishly because clearly we can use any type of bodies at all at this point in the season. If stith had left along with omari and the others, this season would have went even worse than it did, due to an even worse bench than what we had. Not to mention the moral support he gave the first year players. My point remains unchanged that lavin made a mistake by pressuring some of these kids to leave.
I know that whenever a new coach comes in to any program some of the old kids are usually forced out so the new coach can bring in his guys. every case is unique, most of the time when a new coach asks a player to transfer, he has a replacement ready and in place. Lavin did at one point but there was uncertainty as to weather certain players would be qualified eligible. it turns out that some of them werent, and lav had no plan B, we were simply forced to accept a lack of scholarship players (to the point were walkons are getting promoted to scholarship players). IMO we would be better off if he made quincy/omari feel like welcomed and wanted members of the team rather than outsiders who would get no PT (which would not have been true this season anyways because there are more than enough minutes to go around). In that scenario, omari/quincy would have been more likely to stay and the team would have still struggled, but certainly not as much.

I agree that you can only lead these kids to water but they have drink. That doesnt exonerate the coaching staff from any possible mishaps or mistakes. Im critical of how certain situations were handled and looking back its clear that some of the poor handling hurt the status of STJ BBall today. Im not trying to "tarnish" any coaches rep, and if i was trying to then it would be in vain, lavins rep speaks for itself. Im speaking on actions that lavin took as STJ HC and certain actions which i disagree with. Im entitled to my opinion just like anybody else, even if that opinion is negative on how lavin handled certain aspects of a basketball program ive come watch, love, and even work for on occasion.

How do you know that Jamal White has a shot? Have you seen him shoot? Not trying to be a dick, but who is Jamal White?

In only two minutes and with only 2 attempts Jamal White has scored the same 3 pointers than Amir Garrett (2-11 in Big East Conference) and more than Pointer (1-18 in Big East Conference).

Yeah Michael.  And you should know this but while it was all happening you were already slumped over in your seat on the train; half-way into your fourth tallboy - previously having been spotted leaving the Garden in a semi-comatose state mumbling incoherently about Anita Bryant...er Lyle Alzado and 3/4 defenses...er orange juice or soda or something or other.
